than a handful for Jane. Maryβs father, Michael, was a career soldier and was gone from home a great deal, so Jane didnβt get much help from him with rearing her brood. She hoped Father Fitzgerald could put the fear of God into her. Maybe he would even consider giving Mary some counseling, guidance, and direction.
The priestβs comments did not accomplish what Jane had hoped for in bringing her to him for a good tongue-lashing and scare. After hearing of Maryβs unending pranks, the priest simply said.
βDonβt yeh be worryinβ yerself, Mrs. Byrne. This little lass will turn out to be the best of the lot!β
He had Mary kneel before him, heard her confession, and sprinkled her auburn curls with holy water, and gave her a special blessing. Mary was so impressed with the priestβs kindness and blessing that from that day forward, she pulled no more pranks.
Apparently, he saw the future nun, βSister Thereseβ, in the making!
As time passed, Jane was eminently pleased with the results of the visit to the priest that day. Jane had a passing thought that maybe Mary had been selling her cemetery flowers to the priest for his altar but did not pursue it for fear that it may have been true.
Mary seemed to be altogether a different person. No one would have ever believed Mary the imp would choose to do Godβs work after hearing the likes of these stories.
Mary was the second oldest of seven children, six daughters and one son, yet, she was the one destined to become a nun.
