"But what about the healthy ones? Won't they have to be killed to?" The Nature Mother nodded and said
"Yes, the healthy ones get killed as well but only because they need to keep the population down. Too much and they will eat all the food there is and starve to death, which I'm sure I don't need to tell you is inhumane and very painful and a slow way to die." The young boy turned his attention back to Forest and asked.
"Looks like she is going in," The Nature Mother looked and said
"Looks it, and see that deer on the edge of the herd? How it is limping and looks sick?" The young boy nodded and looked at the weak buck and The Nature Mother added.
"That is going to be the deer to fall under her teeth and claws," and sure enough, Forest went out at a full sprint scattering the herd and cutting off the weak buck. When she faced the baying buck, The Nature Mother said
"Now watch how she avoids being injured," and the young boy watched as the deer struck out at Forest with his front hooves and antlers, but Forest dodged the blows and kept on circling the buck, and when it tried to run, she would bit at its hind leg to bring it down a bit and dodge the legs when they came back at her and kept on biting at them. When the buck was finally down, Forest made quick work of suffocating it before she dug in, the little boy a bit grossed out but at the same time amused said
"Wow, that WAS amazing," The Nature Mother nodded and said with a grin,
"Now that buck will provide her with enough meat to last her for a week, if she was in a pack they would have to hunt again, but alone they can last longer on a single carcass and won't need to hunt as much," they then left and the young boy asked
"Can't we stay a bit longer? I want to see what she does with the body when she is finished eating." The Nature Mother shook her head and said
"No, she allowed us to watch her for that much but anymore and she will become nervous and not want to eat at all," the young boy nodded and asked one more question.
"Does she ever come back to the hut?" and The Nature Mother nodded and said
"At times, sometimes she would be gone for days on end without coming back, then I would walk out and see her sleeping on the porch after about three weeks have passed," and the young boy looked at her and asked.
"Arenβt you worried about her? What if something bad happens to her?" The Nature Mother smiled and said
"She is not a pet young one, she is a wild animal and she should stay that way, I have no control over what happens in the wild, if an animal is meant to survive than it will, if not than that is up to Mother Nature to decide how they go," and the young boy nodded at the explanation and asked.
"Could you teach me sometime about nature and the animals within it? I want to learn more so I to can help preserve this wonderful habitat." The Mother Nature smiled and said
"Only if you are certain that is what you want, then that is what I will do, but what about your family? Won't they be wondering where you are?" The young boy bowed his head, noticing his silence and the sudden slump of his head, The Nature Mother knew what was coming next as he said "No, I am an orphan, the village has raised me yes, but now they are growing to not like me anymore and I am not being fed by the people who used to toss food out for me. I have been sleeping in a box in an alley beside a dumpster trying to find enough food for myself, I was recently mugged by a bunch of bullies who took my food away from me and beat me to where I slipped into a long sleep," The Nature Mother nodded in understanding and said
"You and Forest have a lot in common, she to is an orphan, I have seen her burying her slaughter pack when she was old enough, but when I found her as a pup, she was wounded and the marks looked that to be of a coyote attack, she has had it rough her entire life to." The young boy felt a sudden wave of sadness at hearing this tale and asked.
"Really?" The Nature Mother nodded and said
"Yes, you both have had it rough, she can sense that on you, you do not trust easily and believe the lies told to you, but she must sense some good in you as well," and the young boy was silent for the rest of the time to the hut.
