setting giving a light glow on the beach. Someone had already started a bonfire. People were dancing around it to some music set up on a picnic table, where there were also refreshments.
โInvitation?โ Some stocky guys came up to us. They were wearing football jerseys and they looked a little depressed.
Veronica handed him the card. He stamped our hands both with ink and moved to the next crowd behind us.
โThat job must suck. Stamping hands all night.โ Veronica announced too loudly that the guys turned to stare at us.
โWonder how they got that punishment?โ
โWho cares, as long itโs not us.โ She grabbed my hand and pulled me to stand next to the refreshments. She handed me a drink and we cheered.
โThis isnโt alcohol, is it?โ I sniffed the cup.
โGood friends donโt let their friends drink. Especially, when they are my back up driver. Thatโs Coke, and I am only having one drink.โ She took a long sip from her cup.
I rolled my eyes and took a drink from mine. I watched the waves crashing the shore, and the sky was beginning to change colors. I began to curl my toes in the sand, in a massaging kind of way. Warm and soothing just like the air around here. It was calming.
Veronica nudged my shoulder.
โWhat?โ
โThat guy over there is checking you out.โ She pointed at a group of guys on the other side of the bonfire. One was staring in our direction.
โHe could be checking any of us out. Or the fire.โ
โNope, he is definitely trying to catch your attention. Looking at you every few seconds.โ
โWill you stop encouraging him? Heโs probably wondering why youโre staring at him.โ
I moved my attention on the people messing around on the shore, getting their feet wet.
โHeโs coming over.โ Veronica whispered.
โLetโs move.โ I grabbed her arm.
โNo, itโs too late, you will hurt his feelings.โ
It was too late. His shadow took over ours and he tapped my shoulder. I turned around.
โWould you like a dance?โ
