shoulder. I turned around and asked in question β€œyes?” encouraging her to allow me the knowledge as to the purpose behind her action. Like her sisters, her eyes were intent gray but hers lacked the icy coolness and the constant glare that were replaced by careful consideration in her own. Her cheeks were flushed with the color or recent exercise and her lungs heaved as though she had just been running, pumping the air with all their worth. Her panicky gaze kept sliding over her shoulder as if anxiously waiting for some alarming danger to spring from behind the corner and swoop down on her.

β€œIt’s all fake” the breathless words spilled out of her mouth, seemingly the result of an abrupt decision. She began repeating them over and over looking directly into my eyes. β€œIt’s all fake, it’s all fake it’s all fake…” the phrase quieted with each repetition before fading into a whimper. Fear quivered in the air around her and with one last dreading glance over her shoulder she shot off and ran as though her life depended solely the speed of her feet.

Confusion itched at my mind but at the moment I could not turn my thoughts from the hopeless fright that had inscribed her eyes and had inspired a fear of my own. Barely two seconds after Louise’s departure did my mother come down the hall, also at a sprint.

β€œWhat are you doing here?” the words sprang out my mouth with the tone of a demand. My mother turned her eyes to me and to my surprise they were hot with anger.

β€œJust go get in the car!” she ordered. Then, after a moments consideration, her tone softened and she assured β€œ I will explain everything in a minute.” those words would serve to be her last. Her footsteps faded and she was gone.

The day I faced ahead had not yet come to an end. There were many more challenges that would be thrown my way before the sun surrendered the sky to the twinkling stars of night. The day that had begun with such sunshine was soon to end in betrayal and darkness, but that alone was only the beginning….
