was a picture of a unicorn. I just knew that was the door we would enter next. It was. Our footsteps echoed off the high ceilings as we walked towards it. The girl creaked it open as we arrived.
Stepping into the new room, the first thing I noticed was a tall throne at the far side. Someone sat in it. Someone with long hair that seemed to shimmer. The room was grand, with ornate stained-glass windows and a detailed rug. Green light swirled about on the ceiling, looking much like the “Northern Lights” had looked. Then, I noticed something lurking behind the throne. I gasped when I saw it. Could it be? No, of course it wasn’t. But it sure did look like a…
“Oh Trinity! So you have brought us the boy!” boomed a large voice. The form that loomed behind the throne had been the source. Were my eyes deceiving me, or was this an actual glittering blue dragon? Yes, it was. It stretched out its neck and repositioned its wings. Upon its head were two silver curling horns, and its eyes glowed orange like embers.
“Well, of course she did! Trinity sent up her Beacon, remember Falcon?” the figure with the shimmering hair said with a warm tone in her voice. Upon hearing this mysterious lady speak, every ounce of fear departed from me at once. Then, I turned to the girl in the mint coat beside me.
“Your name is Trinity?” I asked.
“Yeah,” she answered. “Why didn’t you ask my name earlier?”
“I don’t know, I just didn’t think…you’d tell me.”
“That is true, she would not have told you,” said the white wolf, much to my surprise.
“You can…talk?” I burst. The white wolf stared at me as if I were insane. If it were possible for a wolf to have such an expression, that is. Kind laughter came from the opposite end of the room.
“I’m sure there are lots of things about this world that you aren’t used to,” said the smiling dragon called Falcon.
“Come up with us, Charlie. We have a lot to talk about,” said the woman in the throne. She stood up and held out her arm, beckoning me.
“How…how do you know my name?” I questioned weakly. The woman chuckled.
“We know a lot more than just you name. Come!” Despite the myriad of questions forming in my mind, I went to her. Trinity and the wolf came with me. As I moved closer, I was able to get a better glimpse of her. She wore a rather plain silver tiara and a dress that looked like a forest at night. Her hair was colored with several shades of sparkling blue and had an unnatural floating quality about it. Also, I noticed a flashy crystal table next to the throne, holding a silver platter of mugs.
“I am Princess Joy. And you, dear Charlie, have entered the realm of Sosapia. Have a seat! Make yourself at home! Come along, Trinity, Yamire!” said the woman, motioning to an arrangement of soft, furry cushions that were set up around the throne. Yamire must have been the wolf’s name, for he came with us. Trinity flopped right down into one of them. I sat down after taking off my mitten to touch the fur-covered surface. The white wolf Yamire jumped up onto the cushion with Trinity. I took a peek at the blue dragon, then at the woman with the blue hair. This woman, who seemed to be a princess, looked at me, then Trinity. “Now how would you like some hot chocolate?”
“Oh yes, please! It’s the best!” Trinity said, rubbing her hands together.
“I’ll have some please,” I replied meekly. Princess Joy sat back down in her throne. She reached down to the crystalline table next to the throne beside her and picked up the silver platter of three tall mugs. She placed it on her lap and flicked a shimmering gold substance over them. Within moments, the mugs began to fill with steamy brown liquid. She picked up the platter as whipped cream began to form. Trinity took a mug right away. I grabbed the one next to hers. The final mug of hot chocolate was for Joy herself. She placed the platter back on the table and took a dainty sip. I looked to the furry cushion beside me; Trinity seemed to be enjoying it. I took a sip. To this day, I have not tasted a better hot chocolate than the magical one made by Princess Joy. It was rich, like pure melted chocolate bars. And it was just the right temperature: cool enough so that it did not burn me, and warm enough to be comforting in the snowy night. And the whipped cream on top was quite refreshing.
“You’re must be wondering why you came here,” said Falcon in a deep, songlike voice. I nodded, taking another swig of hot chocolate. The cocoa infused drink had made me disregard any uneasiness I might have had before.
“We shall tell you that. But first, I’m sure you’d like to know where ‘here’ even is,” Joy said. I nodded once again. “Okay then! As I have said, this is a place called Sosapia. I’m almost certain you’ve never heard of it, and you cannot find it on a map. It is a place that is different from your own in many ways. For example, dragons live here.” She motioned to Falcon.
“What? There aren’t dragons in First Earth?” Falcon burst, flabbergasted.
“Not anymore. They’ve either died or moved on to other realms,” Joy answered the dragon. She turned back to face me. “As I was saying, dragons live here, as well as many other creatures you’ve never heard of. Oh, and animals can talk.”
“Like Narnia?” I managed to get out.
“A bit, yes,” Joy agreed. Confusion came upon the face of the sparkling dragon, but he said nothing.
“So,” I began softly, “why am I here?” Joy and the dragon exchanged smiling glances.
“Well, young Charlie, you are here of your own doing,” said the princess. I stopped mid-sip.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that you are a special person. You came here by yourself.”
“Your home is in another Mirrorside,” Yamire growled, as if he thought I were stupid. I would have made a rebuttal, but this was a talking wolf. I had nothing to say to that. After all, what even was a “Mirrorside?” Then, I came upon a notion: This is all a dream! Suddenly, Princess Joy stared me in the eyes with a stern but fearful expression upon her face. Uh oh. She had heard my thought, I knew it! Of course she had heard my thought.
“Please, don’t,” Joy said in a whispery tone. And then it all faded away… Imprint
