CHAPTER 1
(A Brief History Lesson)
10 years later……
Jacoa woke up after a good long sleep. He clearly had his real father’s features although of course oblivious to the fact. His supposed father had long blonde hair too, but Jacoa’s was more goldish.
Well built and physically strong for a budding ten year old. He had shown promise in his very early childhood, but he was an inquisitive and analytical character. He had a gift of natural charm and charisma but an occasional streak of outbursts. He was bored he was only young but his parents were nobleman. They looked after him well and he had heard good things about the Empire.
He was willing to serve his king today, right now, but what was the hold back? Things were being held back from him and he had yet been able to visit anywhere outside a ten mile radius around the gardens and noble quarters within the Fort.
He had already shown some form of maturity but his patience or lack of it was a sign of weakness; apparently. He was a fighter, a true natural leader, but he would have to learn to control his already inner rage. Kind and a nice boy he could change when he wasn’t right or if he was ridiculed. His parents had been quite strict at times but over all over protective.
He could be argumentative at times and his parents were under pressure to get him through the up and coming years of puberty.
He left his room and marched straight into his Father’s room with an overwhelming sense of confidence.
Stacka was a well to do man and Tisa was a pretty well liked woman. They couldn’t have children naturally so to have a child as Jacoa given to them was of course an honour.
Captain Luca had overseen them mainly fulfilling his promise to Estern that Jacoa would be treated well.
Stacka and Tisa were very proud of Jacoa and knew the arrangement, they were to look after him throughout childhood teach him right and wrong and eventually coming of age they were to encourage him to join up to the legion.
This had been an easy task as from an early age, Jacoa dreamt of being in the Imperials.
The parenthood had had strains and they were scared they would lose their son too early; they wanted him to live his teenage years before being committed to the Empire. It was very unusual for anybody under the age of 16 to do active duty, but training began at 10 and many did boring mundane but essential tasks for experience or gold.
Stacka knew that time was up and he knew that Jacoa knew this. He was ready for the battering of his son’s voice. Before he spoke the tall Stacka calmly put his finger to his lips and embraced Jacoa.
Jacoa’s stern face turned into a friendly smile as he looked into his father’s eyes.
“Son, your mother and I have been speaking to Captain Luca and we have noticed your eagerness and you have our blessing. The first thing a person must do before joining the Legion or Empire is to take your vows in the temple. You will read the basic book of Empire history and the Gods.”
“Yes, Yes, now, father, please I have my bag already packed with fruit and some bread.”
“You are due there at 10:00 30 minutes’ times. You know where the temple is?”
“Don’t be stupid Father of course I do.”
Jacoa left his house heading the quickest route eagerly awaiting to read this history book.
He got to the door and entered.
“Hello can I help you?” A flattering and kind spiritual voice said.
“Yes I’m Jacoa I’m here for the Carlex (Carlex being the process of signing up).
“Very well, young Jacoa, you will study this book and then accept the vows.”
Jacoa sat down a huge grin on his face and opened the book entitled “The Empire’s history.”
King Mercas had ruled for 35 years. A kind hearted, but strong leader through a relatively peaceful time. He was well like by the people and his advisors.
King Mercas like to be involved with the people putting in public appearances. Despite being warned Mercas had visited a group of ill villagers to offer support. He had caught the deadly sickness and now he was dying. It was time for a new king and it was obviously going to be his son Ravelon.
Ravelon was at his side as he waited to be named the new king and take on active duty. There was a shock.
King Mercas named Salac as the new knig. Ravelon was confused and so were the general public, who was he and what rights did he have to the throne?
Mercas wanted forgiveness for his sins and confessed all that Salac was a bastard, an illegitimate child from a poor woman he had befriended while married to his wife.
He had been so ashamed of this that he had paid for silence and for the woman to deny everything. A secret kept even from Salac, until now.
Salac was in his early twenties now a couple of years older than Ravelon.
So his last wish was granted. Salac became King and after several months of tension between his half-brother, they became close.
Salac had trained well academically, but not in the art of organising armies or strategies. He had dedicated his life to healing and spiritual wellbeing. Through a year of peace he built up lands helped people and used taxes into health and education. The country became gentle but well civilised.
However the barbarians from the neighbouring country Asandle had been skirmishing between each other, concentrating on their own battles. The ruthless dark forces of the undead had risen to extreme power through ruthless force and now had won it’s own country’s civil war. A powerful and deadly force turned on Carlexon (Salac’s country)
It was a complete shock for salac, the villagers were left fighting with little skills they had and the small inexperience protection of his Army were wipped out in days.
Ravelon was seeing his brother go mad, he was praying and calling on people to believe in the power of the Gods.
People were believing him and they were just getting slaughtered.
One night Ravelon went to challenge his brother to try and talk some sense into him., Salac was in his royal room staring out the window at the stars.
“Brother Salac, you need to do something we are being slaughtered, you need some resistance let me train some armies quickly.”
“Have faith Ravelon.”
As he spoke he quickly looked over as if he knew what was about to happen. The rope which attached the king’s sword above the throne somehow snapped and through some weird coincidence came crashing down blade first and lodged into the back of the king’s head killing him instantly in a bizarre freak of nature accident.
“Brother?” Ravelon screamed.
Ravelon held Salac in his arms, crying.
After the funeral Ravelon became the new king. It was a hard time with recent events. He needed to form an army fast to crush the undead and restore peace.
This is when five gods spoke to him in a dream and they sent a mortal to represent each to become the five elders.
Seren
Prida
Brawa
Justan
Foran
Each were represented mortal brought a book which was given as a gift to Ravelon.
The book of Seren, The book of Prida etc.
These books were the holy sacred books.
With this came a joint doctrine drawn up to encourage a new order.; The Empire.
The Empire was formed to protect the country and restore peace and law throughout the land,
The council of representatives was set up. They represented the peoples values and questions to be put forward to the King. With the help of the Gods Ravelon was able to defeat the undead and became a powerful but noble king loved by his people.
That’s where the story should have ended, but the God’s started accusing Seren of being evil and influencing through forbidden arts. They accused Seren of indirectly killing Selec.
Seren had already insisted her innocence and that her true purpose was to fulfil or help a prophecy from a higher God from them all, who she refused to name.
Seren was banished by the other four and her book was banned and locked away with her in the sacred temple hidden to mankind.
Seren was now a blasphemous word and a forbidden religion or God to follow.
Selec’s bloodline continued as did Ravelon’s running parallel to each other, but it was always Ravelon’s who were king’s or queens.
The children of many generations to come of Selec became suspicious of the four Gods and continued to side with their true God Seren, They were hunted down and killed throughout history in many great battles and stories. The Selec’s had followers and they believed in avenging his death which was caused by the false Gods and that they were influencing the Empire for some other purpose. Of course this is unfounded and one of the key tasks involved in the Empire is to wipe them out.
The prophecies are Seren are unknown but Salac’s followers claim to know them. They are hidden away unread by any mortal of present times and rumour and old folklore are all we know about it. It is forbidden to read this book now and the Empire will be punished.
The book ended very abruptly Jacoa thought and it was all basic and vague, but nether the less he decided it was a thought provoking and inspirational read. He had already found out about small parts but this seemed to fill in the gaps. He closed the books and signed the paperwork to be accepted into the Empire.
