to see the living room and parts of the dining room.

Nick slowly got to his feet, looking out of the window. The Infected were too busy chomping on his and Eric’s parents to notice that they could have two more bodies to eat - as long as they broke through the screen door. However, Nick didn’t care about his safety. He felt intense feelings of anger and sadness that fought within him for control. One half of him wanted to go outside and beat the Infected as revenge for his parent's death, which would get him killed, while the other half wanted to sit in his room, crying into his pillow for hours.

Eric, on the other hand, cared about his safety. He felt as strongly as Nick did, but he recovered faster than him. Although he still felt his emotions bubbling within him, shouting at him to be let out - he knew that their safety needed to be ensured. He crept downstairs, peering around a corner at the front door. The Infected strolled by the door, not paying it any mind. Eric used this to his advantage, moving as silently as he could towards the door, but sticking out of sight. He moved towards the door, grabbing the door and quickly shutting it. It attracted the attention of a few Infected, but Eric didn’t mind. He locked it, turning his back to the door. He slunk to the ground, staring at the area in front of him. We’re safe. We’re safe… are we?

By this time, Nick had begun to move away from his corner and downstairs. He noticed Eric with his back against the front door. “You okay?” He asked.

Eric nodded, not looking at him. His stare was fixated in one direction. “I’m okay.”

Nick nodded, looking away from him. He stared at his parents’ bedroom, headed towards it. He went through the unlocked room and towards the bed. His father had told him to look above the headboard, which he did immediately. “A fake panel?” He questioned. He had been in his parents’ bedroom many times before, but the idea that there was a safe behind the wall wasn’t something he’d expected.

Nick pressed his hand against the wall, moving it up and down. He couldn’t feel anything different, the fake panel blending in with the rest of the wall. “It has to be here, that's what he said before… It has to be here.” He told himself. He rattled his knuckles on different sections of the wall, not hearing much of a difference until he heard a loud echo from one area of the wall. He rattled his knuckles harder on the area, receiving a louder echo. He then grabbed at the panel, able to tear the panel off the wall and exposing the safe behind it. It had been opened and most of its treasures were lost outside, all on Jorge’s body. However, there were a few pieces of important items - a pistol and an assault rifle as well as several boxes of ammunition.

“E-Eric!” He whisper-shouted. “Come check this out.”

Eric came in, wiping tears from his eyes with his sleeve. “Y-Yeah, what h-happened?”

Nick showed off the two guns and ammunition to Eric, getting a ‘Woah!’ From him. “Crazy, right? All this time, there were guns in the house.”

“H-How did your dad even get guns? I thought they were outlawed after last year’s shooting.” Eric asked.

Nick shrugged his shoulders. “No clue. Maybe it was before the shooting, who knows.” He grabbed the assault rifle, taking it out of the safe.

“Be careful,” Eric warned.

Nick nodded. He looked for the button to release the magazine, finding it with the help of Eric. The magazine was released as they checked for any ammunition inside before loading it fully. The magazine was then clicked back into place.

He then looked through the iron sights, pointing the end of the barrel at the wall. He made sure to not aim it at himself or Eric.

Meanwhile, Eric loaded the pistol, slightly nervous to be holding the gun. It felt like he was holding a stick of dynamite that had been lit, now biding his time before it exploded.

He made sure the gun was on its safety before looking down the iron sights, careful of where he pointed the gun. “What should we do with these guns?” He asked.

Nick shrugged his shoulders. “If something happens… then maybe we’ll need to use it.” Eric nodded his head, understanding what Nick meant. If the Infected barged in, they would have to use the guns to fight them. However, how could two teens with no experience using guns fight back the Infected? Both Nick and Eric hoped that they wouldn’t find themselves in that situation.

“We would die,” Eric remarked.

Nick nodded. “We will.”

Eric turned around. “Let’s go make sure they don’t get in.”

“How do we do that?”

Eric turned around to face Nick. “Remember that comic series where the world ended and people were killing each other? They were able to fight other people by fortifying their base. Let’s do that.”

Nick nodded in agreement. “Good idea. Let’s fortify the house.”

Episode Three "Burned The Meat"

Eric worked on fortifying the front while Nick had the back. Eric used the living room’s couches to block the door and parts of the wooden frames of the couches to nail against the windows. Nick, on the other hand, used the table and chairs to block the back door and stripped the cabinet doors to block the windows off. They worked tirelessly to fortify the house, spending the rest of the daylight to do so. They did their best, putting up crude defenses made of whatever material they had around.

Once they finished with their defenses, they moved to the kitchen and began rationing out what supplies they had. Half of their food was in the hummer, leaving mostly perishable items behind. The electricity had stopped working in the morning, so most of the perishable refrigerated items like milk, eggs, and meats would rot quickly soon. Unfortunately, perishable goods made up the near majority of the supplies left behind in the house.

“Did we leave any cans?” Nick asked.

Eric looked through the cabinets. “A couple of cans. Not enough for a week, though.”

Nick nodded. He went towards the refrigerator, looking at the meat inside it. He pulled out the steak from the freezer, bringing it to the stove. “Let’s leave the cans alone for now.”

Eric nodded in agreement. He approached the refrigerator, noticing that they still had ice. He pressed the ice against the remaining meats in an attempt to keep them cold enough to survive a few days.

Meanwhile, Nick began preparing the steak to cook it. He seasoned and cut the meat before laying the strips into a pot. He used very little oil as they didn’t have much to start with. He began cooking the meat while Eric left, headed to his room on the second floor.

Once in his room, he peeked out of the window where he had witnessed his parents’ death. The Infected were moving slowly, taking their time eating on the remains of Nick and his parents. He could still hear the sounds of flesh being torn off the bones even half a day later. It was a buffet of flesh for the Infected, who gathered in larger hordes. They were flooding the neighborhood.

He turned away from the window, heading farther into his room. He headed towards a drawer positioned in a corner of his room closest to the bed, pulling out a photo from one of the drawers. The photo was of his family. His father, mother, and him - all sitting down on a red couch. Everybody was smiling, their eyes wide and happy. Everything was perfect.

Eric stuffed the photo back in the drawers, heading downstairs. There he found Nick pressing his back against the refrigerator waiting for the meat to cook. He had laid the strips in the oil, waiting until it was time to flip them. He looked at Eric as soon as he entered the kitchen. “You good?”

Eric nodded. “How’s the cooking?”

“Going good so far,” Nick said, looking up at the ceiling. “How have you been?”

“Honestly?” Eric asked. Nick lowered his gaze towards Eric, nodding his head. “Decent. Today has been… a strange day.”

Nick nodded. “I can’t agree more.” He said before walking forward, flipping the meat strips before returning to his spot against the refrigerator. “Hopefully, it rains soon.” He thought out loud, switching topics.

Eric glanced at their water supply, half a case of water. “We should have a week or two if we ration it out.”

Nick nodded in agreement. “Man… is it weird that we’re rationing out food?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, our parents would’ve taken care of everything. They would go out and buy the food then prepare and cook everything. We didn’t have to do anything but do a little bit of cleaning and playing games. And with the electricity gone, we can’t even play games anymore.”

“I have a board game,” Eric suggested.

Nick shook his head. “There’s a reason why it’s called ‘bored game’ because they’re boring.”

Eric shook his head playfully. “That’s because you don’t want to lose anymore. I’ve beaten you in every game we played.”

Nick stared at him strangely. “Last time I remember, I beat you in one of those games.”

“Nope, we never finished that game.”

“Well… I had more pieces alive than you.”

“If the game continued, I would have won.”

“You ‘would have’ won. However, you didn’t win.” Nick remarked, getting a scowl from Eric.

“Whatever you say, Nick.” He turned away from him. “Oh, and the meat is burning.” Nick jumped forward, checking the meat. They hadn’t burned, but they should’ve been flipped already.

Eric walked away, softly chuckling to himself. He went upstairs into the makeshift living room, sitting down at what they considered the couch, which was a mini-couch bought for cheap. He sat down, looking up at the ceiling - the paint was peeling off. He brandished the loaded pistol, double-checking that it was on safety, before looking down the iron sights.

He looked away, analyzing the pistol; it was an M1911 pistol. The pistol was silver-colored and well-dusted off. It had been kept in good condition, Jorge most likely cleaning the guns whenever necessary.

“I wonder why he never told us about the guns.” He thought out loud. “Did my parents know about the guns… or was it only Jorge?”

“Who knows,” Nick said, creeping into the room.

“Aren’t you supposed to be cooking?”

“Aren’t you supposed to be doing laundry?” He retorted, getting another scowl from Eric. “Anyway, there’s the first batch of meat ready for you. Come down and get a plate.”

Eric nodded, rising to his feet. He approached the stairs that brought him to the first floor but stopped halfway. “Hey, Nick?”

“What’s up?”

“Did you ever know about the guns your dad had?”

Nick shook his head. “I didn’t. I was as surprised as you.”

Eric nodded his head. “Do you think you’ll be able to shoot the gun?”

Nick shrugged his shoulders. “Who knows, but it should be in my genes. My father served in the army and my mother was a nurse who healed soldiers.”

“It should, huh? Hopefully, I can press the trigger.” Eric said, looking away from Nick. Nick, who noticed his sad tone, approached him and patted him on
