who were dead and were still stood. They checked a second time, and then a third time, just to be safe. They then counted the numbed of vampires to see if there should be need of a search. To them everything was in check but everybody failed to notice the disappearance of a German Wiccan named Laura Drew.
...
“No” I screamed.
I was about to meet my death at the hands of Sir Malice – he had been too quick – but I was pushed aside. The daggers in Sir Malice’s hand was now lodged into the stomach of one of my closest friends – Laura Drew. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Laura Drew had been the first German Wiccan to pledge her loyalty to us when War was announced. She had arrived before any other. She had been not just my friend but my mother’s best friend as well. This was one of the reason I had sent myself to Sir Malice in the first place, to stop something like this happening. To save my friends and family. I could easy lay the blame of this on me, but right now, I can’t afford that. It wasn’t necessary for him to kill any of my friend or family. He has chosen too. It was his fault that this has happened and no others. At least that is how I will see it for now.
Sir Malice withdrew his dagger and Laura Drew fell to the floor. I saw red. Anger boiled inside of me. I wanted so badly to kill the Vampire that was stood in front of me. I wanted to kill the vampire that had just struck both mine and my mother’s friend in the stomach.
I stood, my hands burning.
“Alecta flamenta” I shouted. A flame shot from my hand in his direction. He quickly moved out of the way but I was expecting that. I had shot another just seconds late on both sides. He was hit on his hand, knocking the dagger from out of it.
“Reachium” I shouted. The dagger from the floor into my hand. I threw it behind me. “Propellium”
Sir Malice was sent flying back down the corridor. I rushed to Laura. She was still alive.
“Hang on, Laura, it’s going to be okay” I said to her trying to sit her up.
Sir Mallot quickly sped up to come back.
I repeated myself, “Propellium increasium”
He was sent even further back.
“Charlie... finished him before you get... killed” She whispered. I pulled up her up against the wall so she could sit.
‘Hazel, I need your help. Laura Drew is here. She is seriously injured. We still have Sir Malice here so I can’t heal her. We’re at the end of corridor 21.’
‘I’ll be there as soon as I can’
I turned to Sir Malice, who was standing back up from the last blast.
“You will die for that” I sneered at him pointing towards Laura.
“Will I?” he chuckled.
“That is no joke.” I growled.
“You won’t kill me Charlie. I know who you are inside. You wouldn’t kill a fly if it annoyed you.”
“I would kill anybody who has killed or threatened anybody who I care about” I sneered.
“Don’t forget, I was the one who killed Malietta”
“Aqua grasha flooros tichat” I chanted.
Water shot from my hand. Directly at Sir Malice. He moved to the side quickly. So I shot again. Again I missed. I shot one final time. Thankfully I hit the hand with his only dagger in. I still held his first dagger. I knocked it right back behind him. He knew that if he turned to pick it up I would shoot again, taking him on the back. I dared him to do it. I dared him. I just wanted to make this quick now. I had had enough. He had stabbed one of my friends. God knows what his men have done to the others that I cared for. My mind refused to ignore that nagging thought. Was anybody else hurt? Sir Mallot? Mistress Halsente? Jeff? Elspeth? Gabby? Brad? Geska?
I could only hope that they were all okay. I had to hope that is was only one that was down. But my mind snagged on the fact the final Wiccan death total wouldn’t be just one.
“Aqua alota rapida”
Three drops of water shot from my fingers. Each one had a diameter of at least ten centimetres. I spread them so at least one would hit him. And I was luck, two did. One hit his face and another his right hand.
He raised his hands to his face and screeched.
“Aqua grasha flooros tichat” I chanted.
At the sight of it, he struggled to his feet but not quick enough. The floor sloshed around his feet, pulling them out from under him. He fell flat on his face. His face submerged. He squirmed under the water, unable to escape the drift. He fell still but I left the water there for a few moments longer just to be sure.
Mistress Halsente, Sir Mallot, Jeff and Brad approached from behind. Brad picked up the dagger and ran towards Sir Malice. Brad sloshed through the water and he struck Sir Malice where the heart should been. If the water hadn’t killed him, the dagger through his heart had. I withdrew the water. Sir Malice was dead.
I turned my attention to Laura who was sat against the wall. Mistress Halsente was desperately trying to heal her. I came to her side and took her hand.
“Laura... I’m sorry” I said as my eyes weld up.
“Don’t be... I’d rather... die saving... the life... of my best... friends daughter... than die naturally.” She wheezed.
“Hazel?” I asked, looking up to Mistress Halsente.
“I’m working on it Charlie. It will only heal so fast” replied Mistress Halsente.
Laura squeezed my hand one more time. She smiled at me but then her eyes closed. Her spirit left her body. I took her head in my hands without thinking. I leant my forehead against hers as the tears came quick and fast.
“Brad, take Charlie to your room. We’ll tidy up.” Commented Sir Mallot.
A few hours later, we disposed of the bodies of the Vampires. They had no special ceremonies, they were just chucked on a fire and burnt to pieces. We didn’t think they deserved any special favours after death from us.
But then it came to cremating the Wiccan’s that died. Laura Drew was to be the last one to be created as she was the last one to die. We had a cremation room, though it hadn’t been used since the first Wiccan War. The cremation room was a large dome room, three stone sets of chairs surrounded it. Each Wiccan was wrapped in the good luck sheets – tradition – to be burnt in, that was supposed to give them good luck in their next lives.
People came and witnessed the cremation for who they wanted. Usually it was the rest of that person’s Covert. However when it came to Laura Drew, most of the people who were still in the Covert turned up. Most people were grateful for her saving the host of the Orb of Power.
Brad and I sat on the front row. Brad had his arm wrapped his arm around me. My ears started pouring. The tears came freely out of my eyes. I knew crying wouldn’t bring her back , but I couldn’t help but blame myself. Was it really my fault. This war was my fault.
The second Underworld War has started.
