van. It had been a long trip.

Kurt smiled at it all. “This is perfect.”

He turned to face the man who had driven them there. He wondered how much he knew about their family situation, or even about his employer’s wolf bloodline. The driver gestured for them to head to the main house at the edge of the ranch they were visiting.

“Mr. Deacon had already informed them of your coming,” the driver said. “They have accommodations for you, but he has informed me to remind you that this is a working community. Every citizen contributes. This is not a handout, but a leg up. You will have to work hard to keep your residency here. How you do that is between the town council and yourselves.”

“Every pack’s got a council,” Kurt murmured, nodding.

The driver looked confused. He said, “This is not a commune. You succeed or fail according to your efforts. The community is helping you because they see you have a need, but you need to carry your own weight.”

Kurt nodded.

So did his mother, smiling. “Of course.”

Susi grinned. “This is great.”

The driver then gestured for them to continue to the main house.

All four Blithes happily followed.
