It just wasnβt my day. I should have known a date with Hanz was too good to be true. Something had to ruin it.
βPut your hands in the air,β one of them said. βAnd lie down on the ground.β
The searing sensation flared up again. I cried out, unable to comply.
βI said, put your hands in the air and lie down!β
Sobbing, I dropped to my knees, panting hard as sweat beaded on my forehead. βI didnβt kill him! I came here for a cure. Just get it off me! Get it off me!β
I closed my eyes, their heartbeats thundering as the group of them rounded on me. I wished to blame Tabitha for it all, but I sincerely doubted that she murdered Mr. Horwitz anymore than she knew he had been killed.
All the imps around me screeched all sorts of things. The policeβs imps cried out for me to be staked. Mr. Horwitz was right. They knew about vampires. Unfortunately, my back hurt too much for me to explain that I wasnβt one of them.
βHey, look at that,β someone said. βThat mark on her back. Is that what she was screaming about?β
No one answered that question.
Someone had hauled me onto my feet and dragged me into a cop car, my wrists cuffed behind my back. Two men with guns and a reek of garlic with that gross dead rat stench sat at both of my sides.
βPut this on it.β
Immediately I felt a cool sensation where the burn had been. I sighed with relief. βThank you.β
βShut up, demon,β that man said.
I murmured βthank youβ again anyway.
