โWhat Iโm doing here is wondering why I chased off those guys last week. Iโm wondering why I was attacked by who I can only assume are your enemies. But, most of all, Iโm wondering why the fuck you were watching me from the shadows this morning. The way I see it, you owe me some answers. Not the other way around.โ
โI wasnโt watching you, but someone else was. I was just there to make sure they didnโt try anything.โ
Something clicked in Dustinโs brain. โThe blue Chrysler. Damn it, I canโt believe I didnโt figure it out sooner. Iโve seen it numerous times up and down my street. I must be slipping.โ
โHm. Maybe, maybe not.โ
โWhat the hell do they want with me?โ
โDonโt know but they were recording your little firefight this morning.โ
โFuck!โ Dustin smacked the arm of his chair and took out his cell phone to call Jason. When Jason answered, Dustin said, โCall Jamal and both of you get to my shop now.โ He turned back to Ashleigh. โWhat do you know about this?โ
โNothing.โ
โNow why donโt I believe you? I understand everyone has their secrets, but mine arenโt trying to kill you. Yet you wonโt tell me anything.โ
Ashleigh went to Dustinโs desk, wrote something on a piece of paper, then handed it to Dustin. When he looked at it he saw that it was an address. โIf you want my story, be here at midnight. Bring your two Gifted friends if you want, but no one else.โ
Dustin put the paper in his pocket. The address was for a house in a part of town that was mostly abandoned. Curious about why Ashleigh would want to meet there, Dustin said, โWeโll be there.โ
โIโll see you tonight then, but for now itโs time for me to go.โ She turned and went out the door.
When Dustin saw her on the security monitor, leaving the lot, he went to the bookcase and removed from it the notebook Ashleigh was looking at. He brought it to the desk and started writing about what happened behind the diner and their conversation in his office. Not knowing what to think about why someone would be watching him, he put that to the back of his mind after taking note of it.
