he was a felon on the run. โWellโฆ how about we find out how to get back through the portal first and then weโll come back for her?โ Gilraen suggested casually. Fanyare gave him a penetrating stare, under which the imp gulped and shrank back, before finally relenting.
โI guess we couldโฆ. Like you said, we can always come back and find her.โ
Gilraen tried not to let himself look too relieved.
โWell, where should we look first?โ he asked, trying to mask the fact that he had no sort of plan whatsoever now that he had finally convinced the wolf to help him.
โHmm.โ Fanyare didnโt seem to be paying any attention to the imp. Behind his emerald eyes an idea was taking shape. His ears were suddenly erect and his bushy tail had begun to sweep the dirt behind him; he couldnโt help but be excited about finding a new place. And not only was it a new place, but it was a new place comprised of only creatures that possessed magical talents like himself!
Before Gilraen could ask the black wolf what he was doing, Fanyare had backed up a few spaces before crouching down and streaking toward the flawless pool, launching himself towards its core.
Fanyareโs jump lasted much longer than it should have. As his outstretched, spread paws neared the center of the pool his body fell into a gracefully slow motion. The flight was pure exhilaration, seeming to stretch out for minutes on end instead of the actual three seconds. In those prolonged seconds Fanyare closed his eyes as the wind caressed and ruffled his fur with gentle fingers, feeling as though he would rather be nowhere else.
The daunting azure eye, the center of the pond where it seemed to be the deepest, loomed all at once closer, and as it did a jagged sliver of ice seemed to pierce Fanyareโs stomach. All of a sudden he was not so thrilled. All of a sudden, as he gazed into the eye of the pond, he dreaded hitting that inexplicable, foreboding water.
As Gilraen watched in puzzlement, Fanyareโs body suddenly convulsed at an awkward angle a second before the water erupted around him in a great splash.
