talked a bit. She asked why I had a cane. I told her I liked how it looked, how it suited me. I told her about Geoff.
"That's terrible. How are you holding up?'
"You wanna smoke a joint with me in my hotel room?" I asked, ignoring the question.
"Sure, where you staying?"
"Right up here off of this road." I pointed to the ocean.
We got to the room. She could tell I was feeling down. She asked me what I was running from. I told her nothing. I lied.
We smoked one. She locked eyes with me and made funny faces. We both lay on my bed.
"I came across some money recently." I said. Normally, I wouldn't say that in this situation.
"Why are you telling me?"
"I dunno...conversation? I found a coin in my pocket from the future." I said, waiting for her response.
"Cool."
That's what she said. She looked across the room.
"Do you ever feel like you're on auto-pilot? Like nothing you do is your choice? That your life is just one big boring movie you have to sit through?"
"No, it's very exciting. I mean, I met you and had to talk to you. Now we're high and who knows what else could happen? You know? You never know." she said smiling.
I turned to her.
"Do you wanna have sex now?"
She got on top of me. I told her she was beautiful. She smiled. I don't know how long it lasted. Time stopped, there was only us. Just connection. Indescribable. When we finished she began to cry.
"What's wrong?" I asked holding her close on my bed.
"Nothing, I just get like this after. Let's try out that board, huh?" she said, wiping away the tears and putting her bikini back on, she grabbed her purse, and gave me a few round green pills.
"These will make you feel better." she said as she ate one and put more on my nightstand.
We made our way outside. I sat next to the tide in the sand. I didn't feel right.
"It's gonna get worse before it gets better. You should come in the water." Steph said, playing on my board. She stood up and walked to me. I lay there taking in the scene.
About two hours later, Steph told me she had to go somewhere. I felt the emptiness again. She left me her cell number.
I told her it was fun and told her to come to my room if she wanted to again. She smiled and ran off.
I was hungry for some potato chips. I saw a 7-11 a few blocks away. I make my way up to my room for cash, wondering what pill she gave me.
I look it up online. It's morphine sulfate. I grabbed a couple of the ones from my nightstand. Only two of them were morphine. The other ones looked different. I looked them up. The were for herpes. God, I wish I would've worn a condom.
Feeling less self-esteem, I made my way to the 7-11. Walked around a while not knowing what I wanted. I grabbed some chips, a Pepsi, and some beef jerky. Before I could check out, I saw him.
"Everybody down." he yelled pulling out a silver and ivory colored pistol.
Instantly, everyone was on the floor. I stood up and walked toward the counter, I needed some smokes.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" he asked, pointing his pistol at me.
"I'm getting some smokes. What are you doing?" I answered showing no fear. I reached over the counter and grabbed a pack of Kamel Reds. I lit one and stared at the robber. He was perplexed.
"You should leave, this is serious man. Think about it. Go home and be with your family, because if you stay here you won't see them again. You know this. Here, have a joint." I said handing him a joint.
"I...I...What? Get your ass on the ground." he said lighting the joint, thinking about his next move.
"Not gonna happen. I'm no bitch. Hey, you want a car? I just got-"
The robber pulled the trigger and ended my sentence. Imprint
