I kept thinking about that house. What was that twinkle that I saw? Was it gold? Was it a crystal? I tried to think about what I saw in the house, but it just wasn’t clear enough. Maybe it was a dream? No. I have to go back to that house! But how, just how, was I going to do that! I started walking home until I ran into this person, I was just going to keep on walking after I said sorry, but she said, “STOP!” I turned around. “What did I do?” I said and saw it was an old lady, “Oh sorry I did not mean to be rude.” I told her. The lady replied much more nicely than before, “Oh it’s fine honey.” This lady felt a bit shady.
Then she said “well let’s walk for a little bit“ I refused. I politely said no thanks and started to walk back in the direction of my house, knowing that you should never trust strangers. But the lady stopped me. Her voice changed completely into a low and fierce one, “You're coming with me!” She dragged me all the way to this house that I had seen before but I couldn’t remember where, and took me inside! I screamed and yelled but she just acted like nothing was coming out of me! Her fingernails were so sharp, that I was now bleeding on my right arm. I saw a glimpse of something shiny like gold and pulled towards it. And then everything went black.
I woke up lying face down on the sidewalk. Whatever just happened freaked me out! for the first time in a very long time, I felt like I was going to pee in my pants. were those visits to the house hallucinations or were what I saw, real?! Then the same lady that just dragged me to the ground, walked past me quietly. Nope, it was totally real. I ran home as fast as the wind. Not pausing to look back or take a breath.
I thought I would fall asleep very quickly but that idea slowly faded. It took forever to fall asleep because I kept thinking about what happened. I started to get the feeling I was being watched and I was in danger.
Okay, now I really find the need to tell someone. But I still feel like something inside me is telling me no. I don’t know if I should trust that little voice or stand up to it. I think I’m going to tell someone! No, I can’t, Oh man I don’t know what I should do.
I’m off to summer school again. UHHH. Reading and then math and then, science! And that's when it happened. I met Probably the best friend I will ever have. Her name is Julia. She has long brown hair pulled up in a long ponytail. And hazel eyes. When she sat by me at lunch and started talking to me, I knew we were going to be friends and that was meant to be, I invited her to my house and got up to go to my writing class and she followed me she said her next class was writing also and we walked there together.
“Okay class takes out your writing books”, Ms. Cambell exclaimed! And from then on, all I heard was murmurs. Blah Blah Blah we need to make sure we use punctuation. Blah Blah Blah. Make sure you have good grammar. Blah Blah Blah. Write long and fast...
And then finally the bell went off. Ding! YES! I was out of the room before Ms. Cambell even said we were dismissed. Finally, I was done with summer school for the day!
I walked home with Julia. She is so kind she helped me with my homework, she ate dinner at my house, and then before leaving said thank you, probably five times. She is the best friend I’ve ever had! Well, also I haven’t ever had a friend before. So yeah now I know what it feels like. I wish I’ve had a friend my whole life! That was so amazing! I can’t wait to go back to summer school to see her again. I wonder if I should tell her about my Grandma.
I ran down the stairs at five-thirty in the morning, dressed and all. My mom wasn’t up yet so I left her a note on bright yellow post-it notes about going to school early I went to school early, hope you have a great day, thanks! - Kate
And off I ran to school. So fast that when I got there I thought my legs were on fire! I sat down on the blue ratty swing and checked the time. It was 7:05 school started at 8:30! I have some time I thought. Actually, a lot of time.
“Hello!” I looked behind me it was Julia!
“Hi, Julia” I exclaimed and ran to hug her! She replied in a very exciting way.
“Hi, Kate! I always get here this early because my mom and dad go to work early but no one has ever been here with me!” She looked so happy! I was so excited to see Julia again at Summer School that I came an hour early and she was here too!
“I am so excited to see you, Julia!” I was practically jumping up and down with excitement!
“Do you want to swing?” I asked Julia.
“YES!” She replied. “Let's have a race who can get the highest!”
One week later...
I was walking home, with a little skip in my step. I had just received my first “A” in Summer School and I was so excited to show off my grades to Mom! I ran to grab the mail and it all went downhill from there.
It didn’t even come into my mind until then! Another letter from my PenPal. I ran up to my bed and started crying into my pillow, what is happening I am so confused! Then drowned in my tears I fell asleep.
The next morning I woke up with my hair soaked. It was really uncomfortable I only got a few hours of sleep. 6 maybe? Why did my Penpal have to give me a note when I had had one of my best days!? I decided that I should try and contact my dad and see what he knew about my Grandma. I called his number, 202-555-0187 the phone rang, once, twice, three times until the phone said say your message after the beep, I left a message asking him to contact me soon. All-day I waited and waited for an answer. After dinner, the phone rang. Mom was already getting ready for bed so I answered it. “Dad?” “This isn’t your dad” I then looked at the number, It was my dad’s. Interesting. I knew I had to call someone about this. I ruled out mom.
I called Julia.
“Julia?”
“Yes?” Julia answered.
“I have to tell you something, meet me at the big oak tree in 10 minutes.”
“Okay, but why?” She asked.
“ I will tell you there.” I hung up. I finally would tell someone. I couldn't back down now. This would be the only way to finally concern my fear of my grandma. And finally, someone besides me would know about my grandma. Anyway, Two heads are better than one, right?
Chapter 4Twenty minutes later I met Julia at the big oak tree. “What’s on your mind?” She asked. “I haven’t told anyone this,” I told her, “ I don’t want you to tell anyone either okay?” “Okay.” I had brought the notes my Pen Pal had wrote, “It’s these.” I gave them to her. She looked at the first one, fear crossed her face, she looked at the gravestone, she made a look of horror, she looked at me. She didn’t have to say anything.
“You have to tell someone.” Were her first words. “ I can’t, My Grandma, I feel like she doesn’t want me to tell anyone, besides, I only trust you.” “Okay, two heads are better than one, but what are you going to do?” “I called my Dad and my Grandma answered not Dad, what if she hurt my Dad!” “ She could have but it’s not likely, I mean if she was a ghost, she can’t harm anyone because she is a ghost, they can’t like grab onto you.” “ Then she isn’t a ghost, She grabbed me once in person and I blacked out, when I woke up I was on the sidewalk.” We thought for a long time. “ My parents are fighting right now, They know that I sometimes sleepover at people's houses because of this, can I come over?” Julia said “ Sure! I know all about parents fighting, It happened to mine!” We walked to my house quiet. We both knew that we would have to find out who it was, together.
It had been two weeks and my mom had started liking Julia more and more. Julia practically lived at our house now. Her parents are fighting more than ever and don’t care where she is. Julia is a lot of help. I knew that telling her was a good decision. She thought that maybe my Grandma was back because she needed something, like an object. My dad actually called back. His voice was scared. “Your step Grandma, I called her grandma, didn’t like me and she talked about this famous family heirloom all the time. She never told me what it was though, just that it was very valuable,” he said this on our call. After that, he and I just caught up with each other. Then we hung up. In a couple on seconds, I was at the mailbox, inside was another letter. It read,......
You now know my secret, talk to me at the big oak tree in 10 minutes, bring your friend.
-from Grandma
I showed the note to Julia. She looked at me with a brave face. “Maybe we can solve this once and for all.” We both left for the big oak tree. Then we saw her. She was ugly and gross, she had grey skin and black eyes, her clothes were grey, brown, and black and were ripped very badly. She looked ugly
