SCREAM. “AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!” SHE SLOWLY GOT OUT OF BED AND LOOKED IN HER MIRROR TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HER MOUTH. WHEN SHE OPENED IT, SHE SAW TWO ABNORMALLY SHARP TEETH BULGING FROM HER GUMS. FREAKED OUT, SHE YELLED, “MAMMA!!!” HER MOM QUICKLY RAN TO HER ROOM. “WHA--,” SHE STARTED, BUT WHEN SHE ASHANTI’S MOUTH SHE BROKE INTO A MASSIVE GRIN AND SAID, “OH MY GOD HONNEY. YOUR FANGS FINALLY CAME IN.” ASHANTI LOOKED AT HER MOTHER WITH CONFUSION, “WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? MA, WHAT’S GOING ON?” BUT THE LITTLE FACT THAT SHE WAS A BIT SCARED TO CLOSE HER MOUTH BECAUSE OF HER FANGS, HER WORDS SOUNDED MORE LIKE: “WAR HU YAKIN AHOUT? HA, WHAS GON ON?” TRICIA’S SMILE SLOWLY STARTED TO FADE. “SWEETHEART, YOU SHOULD SIT DOWN FOR THIS.” ASHANTI SAT ON HER BED, WAITHING FOR HER MOTHER TO FINISH. “YOU’RE A VAMPIRE, WELL A FLEDGLING VAMPIRE.” ASHANTI JUST LOOKED AT HER MOTHER LIKE SHE WAS CRAZIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. WHEN SHE HAD THE GUTS TO FINALLY CLOSE HER MOUTH SHE SAID, “THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE, VAMPIRES DON’T EXIST.” “WELL THAT’S NOT COMPLETELY TRUE. YOU’RE ONE, AND MY WHOLE SIDE OF THE FAMILY WERE VAMPIRES.” TRICIA SAID, AND AS AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE HER DAUGHTER BELIEVE HER, SHE RETRACTED HER FANGS. ASHANTI JUMPED IN SURPRISE ALTHOUGH SHE DIDN’T KNOW WHY, CONSIDERING SHE HAD A PAIR OF HER OWN. “OK, SO SAY WE ARE VAMPIRES, WHAT COMES WITH THAT?” HER MOTHER LOOKED AT HER NERVOUSLY; SHE DIDN’T WANT HER DAUGHTER TO HATE HER FOR MAKING HER SOME KIND OF MONSTER. “MOM, I COULD NEVER HATE YOU.” ASHANTI SAID THEN PAUSED WHEN SHE REALIZED THAT HER MOTHER DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING. THEY LOOKED AT EACH OTHER WIDE EYED. TRICIA’S SMILE RETURNED, “WELL, YOU JUST FOUND OUT ONE OF OUR POWERS.” ASHANTI HESITATED FOR A MINUTE, THEN SAID “ONE? WHAT ARE THE OTHERS?” TRICIA WENT TO SIT BESIDE HER CURIOUS AND FRIGHTENED CHILD. “WELL OTHER THAN THE MIND READING AND HAVING A BIT OF A TEMPER, WE CAN SEE PERFECTLY IN THE DARK, WE’RE REALLY FAST, SUPER STRONG, OUR HEARING IS ENHANCED…AND--” “MA, I CAN READ YOUR MIND, I KNOW SOMETHINGS WRONG.” ASHANTI SAID. TRICIA LOOKED AWAY FROM HER AND SAID, “WELL WHAT IM ABOUT TO TELL YOU DOESN’T REALLY COUNT AS A POWER AND IT MAY SCARE YOU BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW.” SHE LOOKED AT HER DAUGHTER. “WE HAVE TO DRINK BLOOD TO SURVIVE; BUT AS YOU GET OLDER YOU’LL BE ABLE TO CONTROL IT ALONG WITH THE ANGER.” “W-W-WHAT?” ASHANTI LOOKED AT HER MOM WITH SHOCK IN HER EYES. I HAVE TO DRINK BLOOD? WHAT ABOUT FOOD? SHE THOUGHT, TOO FRIGHTENED TO TALK. HER MOTHER THOUGHT: YES, AND YOU CAN STILL EAT FOOD BUT YOU WILL NEED BLOOD EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. AND YOU CAN’T TELL ANYONE. ASHANTI’S BREATH QUICKEND WITH NERVES. NOT EVEN DERRICK? TRICIA: NOT EVEN DERRICK. “NOW, IT’S 11:30 AND YOU NEED YOUR REST.” SHE SAID OUT LOUD. SHE WENT TO THE DOOR AND TURNED OFF THE LIGHT. “NIGHT, HUN.” SHE SAID THEN LEFT. ASHANTI WAS TRYING TO SORT OUT EVERYTHING THAT HER MOTHER HAS TOLD HER. I’M A VAMPIRE, WELL AT LEAST THAT EXPLAINS MY RAGING MADNESS. I HAVE ALL THESE COOL POWERS; WELL EXEPT THE WHOLE BLOOD THING. MAYBE I COULD GET USED TO THIS. WITH THAT LAST SENTENCE AS THE ONLY POSSITIVE THOUGHT IN HER HEAD, ASHANTI WENT TO SLEEP.

Chapter 5

AROUND MIDNIGHT ASHANTI HEARD HER PHONE VIBRATE, BLINDLY SHE REACHED FOR IT BUT ONLY TO ACCOMPLISH KNOCKING IT TO THE FLOOR. “UGH!!” SHE ROLLED OFF HER BED TO HER PHONE, PICKED IT UP AND LOOKED AT THE NUMBER. ANGER IMMEDIATELY TOOK OVER WHEN SHE SAW THE NUMBER: 804-238-8387. DRAKE. SHE OPENED THE MESSAGE AND READ IT: I HVE UR LIL BF. IF U WNT HIM BCK U NEED 2 CME 2 THE WOODS. NOW!!! THIS MESSAGE DID NOTHING TO CALM HER ANGER; IT ONLY INTENSIFIED. SHE JUMPED UP, THREW ON SOME CLOTHES AND HURRIED OUT THE DOOR. LUCKILY HER MOM WAS ASLEEP.

Chapter 6

As she was headed to the woods all she kept thinking was: OMG. I hope Derrick is okay. Suddenly her thought went from sympathy to flat out anger. I am going to kill Drake!! I’m gonna rip his fucking head off!! Ashanti stopped walking because that thought startled her. “What the fuck is wrong with me?” she whispered. She continued walking. Once she got to the woods, she started looking for Derrick. She called his name once, no answer. She tried again a little louder, “Derrick,” For a second, she heard nothing then a muffled sound, like someone was talking into a pillow. Ashanti began walking toward the noise. As she went further into the woods, the sound got louder and louder. She finally got to the sound and saw that it was Derrick. “Oh my god,” Was all she could say. She took the tape off of Derrick’s mouth. He said “Ash? How did u know I was here?” “How do you think? That bastard told me. Are you okay?” She had finally got what she thought were tight ropes from around his body with her vampire strength. He looked at her then back at the broken chains. “How did you do that?” She just looked at him. “What do you mean?” “Well you just broke chains with your bare hands.” She glanced from the chains to Derrick. “Oh, well, umm, about that. I’m--” But she was interrupted “Well, well, well, look what we’ve got here.” Ashanti turned around to see Drake standing there with a smug smile on his face. She started walking towards him yelling and cussing him out. “You bastard. You fucking piece of shit. What the hell is wrong with you?” Once she got to him, she pushed him back with what she thought was a little bit of force. But when she pushed him he went flying 10 feet backwards into a tree. She ran to him with her super speed. When Drake tried to get up she punched him in the face. She backed up and closed her eyes to try and calm herself down. Drake took that as an advantage. “Aww the little fledgling doesn’t have the guts to finish the job, huh? Yea I know what you are.” Ashanti’s eye shot open. Even though Drake’s face hurt and was bloody from the force of the punch, he had that smug look. That and what he said next sent Ashanti over the edge. “That’s right, we both know you’re a blood sucking monster. You and the rest of your vampire family. They were easy kills…especially your mother. Oh, she was strong don’t get me wrong; she put up quite a fight. But I caught her off guard and drained her. Her blood was pretty delicious and I’m sure yours will be too.” As he was saying this he was standing up. Now he was face to face with Ashanti. Ashanti was so angry that she didn’t even feel her fangs retract, and her eyes were blood red. Drake snickered, “There we go, I was waiting for this girl to show up. Did you know your pretty hot when your mad?” He leaned in and whispered in her ear, “Do you think you can be as strong as your mother?” She snapped. Catching Drake off guard, she grabbed his neck and bit him. He yelped in pain, after a few seconds his pleads for mercy was over. Drake was dead. She let his motionless body fall to the ground and wiped the blood off of her mouth. “Ashanti?” She heard Derrick whisper. She hadn’t realized he was standing behind her watching the whole thing. She turned to face him but when he saw her eyes, he flinched back. She realized her eyes were still red. A few moments later, her eyes where back to their normal pale green. “Derrick, I--” but he interrupted her, “What the hell are you?” As he was saying this he was backing away from her. Ashanti, taking another step toward Derrick, said, “Derrick, please let me explain.” She felt tears sting her eyes. “No, stay the hell away from me.” After he said this, he turned around and walked away. Those words were hard for Ashanti to hear, but even harder for him to say. When he was out of sigh she walked home crying thinking of everything that has gone wrong in her life.

Chapter 7

For the next few months Derrick and Ashanti didn’t talk. Ashanti has called Derrick’s phone only to get his voicemail. The last time she called, she left a message: hey Derrick, it’s me. Umm…about what happened in the woods, honestly I don’t know what happened, Drake just made me so mad and I…look, yes, I’m a vampire and I understand if you never want to see me or talk to me again and I know that you owe me nothing but I would appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone. I guess that’s it, so, bye. She hung up her phone and started to cry. She cried for everything: she cried for her dead mother, cried for Derrick and, no matter how much it angered her, she cried for Drake. If Drake hadn’t of taken him, Derrick wouldn’t have seen me like that. But I am defiantly not sad that he’s dead. My life will be so much better without him. She got out of bed, deciding that she didn’t want to lie around all day, and showered. When she finished getting dressed, she heard someone knock on the front door. She slowly went downstairs and opened the door. She was shocked to see the person standing on the porch. The one person she thought she’d never see or talk to again. Derrick. Feeling as uncomfortable as Ashanti, Derrick stuttered his words, “Umm, uhh…I just thought we should talk.” Ashanti nodded her head, grabbed his hand and said, “C’mon, let’s go to my room.” When they got to Ashanti’s room, Derrick got right to the point, “So, you’re a vampire, aren’t they supposed to have like these cool powers?” Ashanti looked at him and smiled. “Yea, I guess. My mom said that I could read minds. Other than that, we’re really fast, super strong, our hearing is exceptional and…” she looked down at her shoes embarrassed by her last power. Finally she says, “…and I can see the future, I just found that out an hour ago.” She hesitantly looked up at him and saw that he was coming closer to her. When he was inches from her he said, “What did you see?” She hesitated to tell him the truth. She looked him straight in his eyes and said, “I saw us. It was 10 years from now and we were married and we—we…” Tears were running down her cheeks now. “…We had a little girl.” At first Derrick didn’t say anything and his expression was blank, then a smile slowly crept across his face. He took her by the waist and hugged her tight. Ashanti cried harder because she felt love and security in his arms. Then Derrick pulled back and looked at her, hesitating to ask what he really wanted to know. “Ash…umm, do you, uh, have to drink blood to live?” Ashanti looked away from him and whispered, “Yea, human blood.” She looked at him, “But Derrick, you have to know that I would never hurt you.” She said in a frantic voice. Derrick just looked at her with sad eyes. He finally said, “I love you, Ashanti.” Without letting her reply, he bent and kissed her. She stiffened, but when she felt Derrick’s tongue on her bottom lip, she opened her mouth and accepted his familiar kiss. She snaked her arms up around Derrick’s neck. Considering Ashanti was a fledgling, her emotions were kind of scattered. She pressed herself up against Derrick, deepening the kiss. Derrick moaned
