“After she leaves, we can head home. She’s the last appointment for today,” Glory said.
Home. If only Glory and Sienna were coming to my house instead of the duplex. She’d made it clear she didn’t plan to date anyone, so I’d tried to keep things as a friends-only relationship. I wanted more from her. So much more. With anyone else, I’d have gone after what I wanted. Glory was different. I didn’t want to push her, make her feel cornered. She’d been through enough and had earned the right to have some space if that was what she wanted. There was also the age difference between us. I was sixteen years older than she was.
Of course, Glory was more mature for her age than most women I’d met. She’d graduated high school and finished a four-year degree in the time most women her age were still figuring shit out. I had a hard time picturing her with someone her age. For one, I didn’t know too many nineteen-year-old men who wanted to be fathers, especially to a kid who wasn’t from their own DNA. Most of us tended to be selfish assholes when we’re younger. And some remain selfish assholes until they die.
Glory looked from Sienna to me. “Would you want to come over for a late dinner? I put chicken and dumplings in the crockpot earlier today. It will still be hot when we get back.”
My stomach grumbled at the thought of food, especially food I didn’t have to get from a drive-thru or cook myself. “You sure you have enough?”
She rolled her eyes. “Wolf, do you honestly think I can eat an entire crockpot of food by myself? If there’s anything left, I’ll set it aside for lunch tomorrow and the day after. If not, no worries.”
“All right. Then I’d love to stop by for dinner.” I smiled and reached out to run my finger over Sienna’s cheek. “Any excuse to spend more time with my favorite girl.”
“If you lived with her, you might feel differently. Her last ear infection about killed me. She was up at all hours because she was hurting, and only walking with her would keep her calm.”
I moved a little closer, wishing I could take them both into my arms. “No. I wouldn’t. I’d consider it an honor and a privilege to help her through the pain. Same for her mom.”
Glory’s cheeks went pink. Shit. I hadn’t meant to say that last part. Before I could backpedal, she leaned closer and pressed her lips to my cheek.
“Thank you, Wolf. For everything, but mostly for showing me not all men are assholes. I’ve witnessed that same kindness with the Dixie Reapers, but it was Tank’s wife who brought me into the fold, so to speak. But a single guy? There aren’t too many of those like you. Some part of me knew that, even after what happened to me. Knowing it and experiencing it are two different things, and you continue to amaze me.”
Now my cheeks were burning. I wasn’t some saint or knight in shining armor. I was just a guy. One who was insanely attracted to the woman in front of me.
“I’m not anything special, Glory.”
“I’d have to disagree,” she said softly.
When the doc yelled out for her, she handed Sienna to me and went back into the exam room. By the time the woman left, with Steel following in her wake, I felt like I’d been tied in knots. I wanted Glory more than my next breath. Not just in my bed, either, but in my life, day in and day out. I wanted the entire package and not a one-night stand. What I wanted didn’t matter, though. Glory had to want it too. Want me.
I followed them to Glory’s duplex and parked my bike in the driveway. I knew my brothers would notice. They’d already given me hell the few times they’d seen me parked over here or Glory over at my place. Nothing had happened between us. She’d helped with my leg twice now when it had been overly irritated, and we’d shared a few meals. I’d even watched Sienna once while Glory ran some errands because the precious girl had been asleep. The rest of the time, the old ladies pitched in to watch the baby when Glory couldn’t take her with her.
The smell hit me when I walked through the door and my stomach cramped from hunger. Damn. My mouth started to water as I made my way into the small kitchen. Sienna sat in her highchair, smacking her hands on the tray.
“Want me to feed her?” I asked.
Glory handed me a jar of bananas. “I’m going to make her a little rice cereal. It will fill her up more, so she’ll hopefully sleep all night.”
I cracked open the jar and started spooning the bananas into Sienna’s mouth. She hmmm’d between bites, opening her mouth like a baby bird wanting more. God but I loved this kid! I used the rubber tip on the spoon to swipe some of the food from under her mouth and she latched onto it, eating that little bit too. She finished off the jar right as Glory put the bowl of baby cereal on the table. I reached for it and started feeding it to Sienna.
“You mentioned she’s developmentally delayed. I know she doesn’t walk or talk yet. And she’s not feeding herself,” I said.
“We tried some Cheerios a few weeks ago. She didn’t chew them well enough and started to choke, so I went back to the baby food and cereal. If you watch her with the learning toys, she’s not as advanced as she should be.”
“Did the doctor say why?”
“It’s a combination of things, or so they think. She was born a few weeks early. Even though she’d cooked long enough she didn’t need to be put into NICU, they warned me she could have complications down the road. Those complications ended up being
