thin flannel socks. โ€œMaybe she knows sheโ€™s no longer subject to a fumbling bachelorโ€™s care. How late can you work?โ€ he added.

โ€œWhat time do you normally finish working outside?โ€

โ€œDinnertime, though I often do an hour or two of accounting afterward.โ€

โ€œMaybe I should put it this wayโ€”what time do you feel up to taking over Mercyโ€™s care?โ€

He rubbed his chin, a look of frustration darkening his blue eyes. โ€œTo be honest, I donโ€™t feel up to it at all, but I know thatโ€™s not a realistic attitude. I canโ€™t keep you here around the clock.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t joking about offering baby lessons, if you really want them.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have a choice at this point, especially since I plan to keep her.โ€

โ€œBut for the time being, how about I stay until after dinner? I donโ€™t mind cooking.โ€

โ€œDanke. Since you didnโ€™t sign up for cooking meals, I can pay you a bit extra.โ€

โ€œCan you afford it?โ€ She clapped a hand over her mouth. โ€œThat was rude. Iโ€™m sorry. Your finances are none of my business.โ€

He laughed. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll manage.โ€

โ€œThen ja, danke. And in addition to cooking, I can do housekeepingโ€”laundry and dishes and tidying up.โ€

โ€œI think weโ€™ll get along together well. Iโ€™m grateful, Jane.โ€

โ€œForget the gratitude and just show me where you keep your washing machine. Iโ€™ll do a load of laundry this afternoon.โ€

The swing-handled nonelectric washing machine was stored in a shed off the back porch. After Levy went back to work, Jane fed Mercy, changed her diaper then strapped the baby back in her bouncy seat on the porch. Jane sang as she washed a load of diapers, more for Mercyโ€™s sake than her own. Then she washed some of Levyโ€™s clothes and hung them to dry on the clothesline.

โ€œCome on, liebling, letโ€™s go look at your uncleโ€™s garden and see what we can find to make dinner.โ€ She lifted the baby over her shoulder, picked up a large basket and walked out to the gated space filled with vegetables.

However messy Levyโ€™s house had been, his garden was a thing of beauty, tidy and weeded. Jane spied the prolific zucchini and decided to make zucchini casserole for dinner. She filled her basket with four of the green squashes, then dug up a couple of onions and some garlic. Back in the house, she had the casserole assembled within a few minutes and popped it into the oven to bake.

Mercy started to fuss, so Jane eased the baby onto her shoulder and sat down in the rocking chair, humming lullabies and rocking the child. The afternoon was warm and Jane was tired. Her humming grew slower and softer.

Next thing she knew, she blinked her eyes open to see Levy standing nearby.

โ€œOh.โ€ She felt her face grow warm. โ€œI must have fallen asleep.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it.โ€

โ€œThe casseroleโ€ฆ!โ€ The infant gave a small start at Janeโ€™s small cry of alarm but didnโ€™t wake up.

โ€œItโ€™s out of the oven and on the warming rack.โ€

She settled back into the chair and shook her head. โ€œI canโ€™t imagine why I did that, falling asleep on the job, Iโ€™m so sorryโ€ฆโ€

โ€œJane, I can see how much work youโ€™ve done this afternoon. Donโ€™t apologize.โ€ He grinned. โ€œIt was actually rather a sweet sight, coming in to find you both asleep.โ€

Her face flushed warmer. โ€œJa, well, Iโ€™ll just go put Mercy in her crib.โ€

She stood up and kept the infant cradled on her shoulder, but the moment she stepped foot in the kitchen, she stopped in her tracks. โ€œWhat on earthโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a total klutz in the kitchen.โ€ Levy chuckled.

The table was neatly set for two, and the casserole was covered and on the stoveโ€™s warming rack.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to do thisโ€ฆโ€ she began.

โ€œWhy not? Stop feeling guilty, Jane. It didnโ€™t take me long.โ€

She nodded and disappeared into the bedroom to lay Mercy in her crib. She took a few deep breaths before leaving the room. Falling asleep her first day on the jobโ€”how embarrassing.

When she reemerged, Levy dished up the food and filled the plates. Jane bowed her head for grace, then reached for her fork. โ€œYour garden is beautiful. After seeing the state of your house, I didnโ€™t expect it to be so nice.โ€

โ€œJa, Iโ€™m more of an outdoorsman than an indoor one. I can weed all day, but I donโ€™t see anything that needs doing inside.โ€

โ€œWhich is why everything was so thick with dust.โ€ Jane swallowed a bite. โ€œBut it will be easier to keep up now that I cleaned everything.โ€

โ€œOh, did you clean everything?โ€

She chuckled. โ€œTypical man who doesnโ€™t see dust bunnies until theyโ€™re big enough to bite. Donโ€™t worry, I took care of them.โ€

โ€œAnd you did laundry too. And made lunch and dinner. And took care of Mercy.โ€

โ€œAnd you worked in the fields all day. We both have our jobs, then.โ€

โ€œStill, you seem like a very organized person.โ€

Janeโ€™s smile faded. โ€œIโ€™ve been told Iโ€™m a very useful person.โ€

โ€œIs that such a bad thing?โ€

โ€œNeinโ€ฆ Nein, I guess not.โ€ Unless it came from the man she loved. She shoved the thought of Isaac behind her. โ€œSo I guess Iโ€™ll accept being useful.โ€

โ€œBeing useful has its advantages.โ€

โ€œAnd itโ€™s what Iโ€™m good at. I try not to be bitter about it.โ€ She hadnโ€™t meant to be so open with Levy.

He raised his eyebrows. โ€œBitter? Why would you be bitter about something like that?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nothing.โ€

โ€œDoes this reference have to do with your mysterious past that we talked about yesterday on the way home from the train station?โ€

โ€œMaybe.โ€ She rose, trying not to feel flustered. โ€œAre you finished? Iโ€™ll wash up before I head home.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re changing the subject, but thatโ€™s okay. Iโ€™ll take advantage of the baby sleeping and start my accounting work.โ€

As Jane washed and rinsed bowls and cutlery, she found herself grateful for Levyโ€™s restraint. He clearly wanted to know about her past, but didnโ€™t probe. Levy was the last person she wanted to learn about her background.

With just two people to feed, dishes took only a few minutes. Jane peeked in at the baby and found her still
