โ€œYeah, I think I can if I go slow.โ€ Buttercup nuzzles up to my leg and licks my hand. โ€œI wish you were bigger, boy. I could ride you all the way home,โ€ I say to my concerned furry friend.

Bran laughs as he kicks dirt onto the fire to make sure it's out all the way. โ€œYou need a horse.โ€

โ€œI have two, but they're back at the farm.โ€

โ€œWhich farm?โ€

โ€œMy family owns Jamison's up on Thirty-Seven.โ€

โ€œOh yeah, that's right. I used to pick apples there when I was a kid.โ€

โ€œMe too, only not for fun.โ€ Laughing sarcastically, I roll my eyes.

He laughs with me and nods. โ€œI can understand that. It's fun when it's not your job.โ€ Throwing the pack over his shoulders, he looks out at the tree line. โ€œYou ready for this?โ€

โ€œReady as I'll ever be.โ€

โ€œWait,โ€ he says, holding up a finger. โ€œI have an idea.โ€

Bran darts off into the trees quickly, and Buttercup follows him.

โ€œButtercup, wait!โ€ I call out, but he ignores me, tagging along with Bran anyway.

A few minutes later, they both emerge from the brush, and Buttercup is carrying a large stick.

He runs to me and drops it at my feet. โ€œNot now, Buttercup, we have to get going. We can play fetch later.โ€

โ€œNo, the stick isn't for fetch, it's for you. You can use it like a crutch or a cane to help you walk and keep your balance. The less weight you have to put on it, the better.โ€

Sexy and creative. I'm falling for him already.

There really is nothing hotter than a man who can use his hands and his head. And when you top that with being the sexiest man I've ever seen, you get the whole package.

โ€œAll right, let's hit the road.โ€ His hands grip the straps on his pack, and he steps to the side. โ€œI'll stay beside you just in case.โ€

โ€œGood. You can catch me if I fall.โ€

โ€œAlways,โ€ he says.

The way he says it makes my chest constrict and my heart stop. His tone is deep, full of truth and basked in honesty. He picked me up once when I fell, and he'll do it again if he has to.

The woods are alive with birds and small animals. Squirrels are leaping from limb to limb and there's a woodpecker making a lot of noise in the distance. I'm taking careful steps, using the stick to help counter my weight and keep my balance.

We walk in silence. An awkwardness falls between us as we slowly make our way up the trail. Nothing is tense, just awkward.

โ€œSo,โ€ I finally say, โ€œyou still make those things?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he answers with a laugh. โ€œI still make those things.โ€

โ€œI'm sorry, I don't know what you call them.โ€

โ€œIt's fine, don't apologize. I just call it art.โ€

โ€œI always thought of art as a painting or drawing.โ€

โ€œThat's one type of art. But you also have sculpting, plays, films, books. All of it is considered art.โ€

โ€œI didn't know that.โ€

โ€œWhat I do I guess is called expressionism art. I like to make things that are subjective. Everyone sees something different.โ€

โ€œWell, what you do is beautiful. I love the sculpture outside the motel. I've spent hours just staring at it.โ€

โ€œThanks. What about you? You still working there?โ€

โ€œYeah, for now.โ€

โ€œFor now?โ€ he asks.

Stumbling over a rock, he grabs my elbow and helps me steady myself. His touch is firm and tender in the same breath. The heat off his fingers sizzle against my skin, sending a rush of electricity up my arm.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I say.

โ€œI meant what I said. I'll always catch you.โ€ He lets his fingers linger a little longer before pulling them away.

My skin goes cold, and I miss his fingers there instantly.

โ€œSo, you were telling me about work.โ€

โ€œOh, yeah. Well, I like the motel, but I don't want to stay there for the rest of my life.โ€

โ€œWhat do you want to do then?โ€

โ€œI don't know. My brother thinks I should go to college for business and run my own hotel or something, but I'm not sure if that's what I want.โ€

โ€œWell, what do you like to do?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ I ask, carefully climbing over a fallen tree.

โ€œFor fun. What do you like to do for fun?โ€

Shrugging my shoulder, I say, โ€œI don't know. I like hiking, camping, riding my horses. Being outside really, that makes me happy the most.โ€

โ€œI've never been on a horse before.โ€ He quickly holds out his hand and grabs my shoulder. โ€œHold on. You see that?โ€

Stopping, there's a thin, rocky stretch of terrain in front of us. I fumble with my walking stick a little as I debate the best way for me to navigate it.

โ€œShit.โ€

Bran pulls his pack off and drops down to his knees. โ€œClimb on,โ€ he says.

โ€œWhat? No, you don't have to carry me.โ€

โ€œJust climb on. I'm not going to risk you losing your balance here.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ I ask. He looks back at me over his shoulder, his eyes serious. โ€œAll right, then.โ€

Climbing onto his back, I have my stick in one hand and he passes me the strap to hold his pack in my other hand.

With ease, he climbs around the rocks, not even affected by my weight on his back. Reaching the other side, he carefully sets me back down.

โ€œSee, easy as pie.โ€

Glancing around, my jaw drops open. โ€œIsn't this about where you found me? I recognize that tree right there with the giant knot.โ€

โ€œYeah, I think it is.โ€

โ€œThe water's gone down a lot since yesterday.โ€

โ€œThat's the thing with these types of floods from really heavy rain; here today gone tomorrow. We had that huge storm a few days ago, that's why the river was so wild.โ€

Inching myself closer to the water, it's so much more calm, almost as smooth as glass. Looking around, I scan the bank and the edge of the water.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ he asks.

โ€œLooking for my stuff. It should be around here. I'm hoping the water is down enough for me to see it.โ€

Buttercup takes the opportunity to have a long drink as Bran
