βI am of the same opinion.β Martin walked over to the door. βNow, if you will excuse me, I have work I need to see to.β
βI wish you luck.β

Hannah sat at the writing desk in the drawing room as she wrote to her sister, Amelia. She was pleased that her sister had found love with the duke, but she missed her dreadfully. Perhaps she should recommend that Amelia visit before the end of the Season. It was most unfortunate that Amelia did not enjoy balls or social events, of any kind.
Kate walked in with files in her hand. βWe must get to work if we want Martin to find a bride in less than a month.β
βI have no doubt that young women will be lining up for a chance to be courted by him,β Hannah said as she placed the quill down. βHe will eventually become the Marquess of Darby.β
βThat may be true, but we are trying to find a diamond in the rough.β Kate sat down on the settee. βIβve sent word for Martin to join us.β
βYouβve been busy,β Hannah muttered.
βI see no reason to dally,β Kate replied, giving her a pointed look. βDo you?β
Hannah rose from the chair at the writing desk and smoothed her jonquil muslin gown. βI do not.β
βExcellent.β Kate placed the files onto the table in front of her. βI have selected two young women who I believe will potentially be excellent contenders for Martin.β
βOnly two?β
βWe have not spoken to Martin yet,β Kate reminded her. βWe do not know what characteristics he is looking for in a bride.β
Hannah came to sit next to her sister on the settee. βI have no doubt he will want her to be beautiful.β
βI agree, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.β Kate shifted in her seat to face Hannah. βBut first, we should discuss what attributes you are looking for in a suitor.β
The image of Martin came to her mind, but she dismissed it just as quickly. βI want someone who will love me above all else.β
βThat is what I want for you as well,β Kate said. βBut can you be more specific?β
βI want someone who is charming, but his words must be genuine.β
Kate nodded in agreement. βThatβs good, because we have no time to entertain rakes, or fortune hunters, for that matter.β
βHe must make me laugh.β
βA sense of humor is important.β Kate leaned forward and picked up a file. βI put together a list of gentlemen I believe would be a good fit for you.β
βWithout speaking to me first?β Hannah asked in surprise.
Kate smiled. βIt was a risk I was willing to take,β she joked as she opened the file. βI believe Lord Blakely, Lord Charles Brooksbank, and Lord Groff would all be a good fit for you.β
βI do not aspire for a title.β
βI am well aware, which is why I selected these gentlemen on their merits rather than titles,β Kate shared.
βThatβs good.β
βFurthermore, they are friends with Edward, so he can vouch for their characters.β
βI am acquainted with Lord Blakely and Lord Charles, but Iβm afraid Iβve never been introduced to Lord Groff,β Hannah said.
βAnd what do you think of Lord Blakely?β
βHe is handsome enough,β she replied, βbut I have only danced one set with him.β
βLord Blakely is a staunch Tory, and he spends his time managing his vast holdings,β Kate said. βHe is more serious in nature, but I have witnessed the jovial side of him.β
Martinβs voice came from the doorway. βLord Blakely is decisively dull,β he announced.
βThat is not true,β Kate declared.
Stepping further into the room, Martin continued. βHe would much rather spend his time in the library than attend social gatherings.β
βThere is nothing wrong with that,β Hannah defended. βIt shows he is well read.β
Martin glanced between them with a curious look on his face. βWhy are you both so interested in Lord Blakely?β
Hannah tilted her chin. βIf you must know, I have decided I am interested in being courted this Season.β
βYou are?β Martin asked.
βI am,β she replied.
Martin frowned. βArenβt you rather young to be interested in matrimony?β
Hannahβs lips parted in disbelief at his ridiculous remark. βI just turned twenty and have had two Seasons,β she argued.
βYou have?β
It was Hannahβs turn to frown. βI see that you have been rather perceptive when it comes to me.β
βI apologize for my poor reaction,β he responded. βIt is entirely unfair of me.β
βThank you.β
Martin came to sit across from them on the settee. βMay I ask what gentlemen you have set your cap to?β
βI have yet to decide anything,β Hannah said firmly.
βI see.β
Hannah paused. βNot that it is any of your business, but Kate believes Lord Charles Brooksbank and Lord Groff would also be splendid matches for me.β
Martin nodded. βI would agree,β he replied. βThey both appear to be honorable gentlemen.β
βI am pleased to hear that,β Hannah said. βWith any luck, I will be wed by the end of the Season.β
Martin looked displeased by her response. βMay I ask why the urgency to wed, Hannah?β
Hannah pressed her lips together, then replied, βI have seen how happy my sisters are now that they are wed, and I wish to have the same joy in my own life.β
βYou are still young andββ Martin started.
Hannah spoke over him. βI thank you for your concern, but we have more important matters to discuss.β
βOf course,β Martin responded.
βWe are here to determine the attributes you are looking for in a wife,β Hannah said.
Martin held her gaze for a long moment, his eyes holding questions. βI am looking for the usual attributes, I suppose.β
βSuch as?β Hannah pressed.
βI want someone I can fall in love with and look forward to growing old with,β Martin remarked.
Kate spoke up. βDo you have a preference in appearance?β
βI have discovered the most beautiful women are the ones who smile the most,β he said. βI also would like for my bride to be clever and quick-witted.β
βAre you looking for a bluestocking, then?β Hannah asked.
Martin shrugged. βI am not opposed to a bluestocking.β
Hannah
