most of the first half an hour before Nerin arrived, sorting out potions and gear. I checked through some of my Emporium loot, using ‘Examine’ on the rings and various bits of jewelry, downing a couple of the cheaper positions to bring me back up to full mana.

I found, of the seventeen bits and pieces, eleven rings, six necklaces, and single thick metal torc, only five were really useful at this stage. The others were put aside for use at the Tower, since most of them were geared towards crafting, rather than combat.

I gave the ‘Ring of Dexterous Handling’ to Stephanos, figuring it would help him hit things faster, as well as the ‘Bleeding Band’. He was grinning from ear to ear as he tried them both on, until the ‘Bleed’ effect started, and he nearly stripped his finger of flesh in his need to take it off.

“You don’t have to wear it…” I said to him, but he cut me off before I could finish speaking.

“No, Jax, we’re in this together. It’s too good a bonus to pass up; can you imagine the bleeding effect I’ll be able stack when I keep firing into the same target? I just don’t want to feel it until I need it!”

“Fair enough.” I acknowledged, passing the torc and ‘Ring of Immediate Healing’ to Lydia. She smiled in thanks and settled them into place, grinning as her Constitution jumped. I took my old healing ring back from Miren and passed it to Grizz, who beamed, obviously excited to be joining the team and fighting in the arena.

Lastly, I gave the chain of ‘Shadow’s Revelation’ to Bane, as he would get by far the biggest boost from it, then pulled out the pair of ‘Dagomar’s Daggers’ I’d looted from the Emporium, passing them to Bane as well.

I examined the other weapons, disappointed at finding that most were crap, but there were three that were worth the attention. A spiked mace, the sword from the former commander of the Golem maintenance station, and a wand, and I couldn’t help but smile as I checked them out.

Lydia got the mace, and Arrin the wand, and I thoroughly enjoyed the delighted looks they gave me, and the curious looks the rest of the room gave them.

“Augustus?” I called and he walked over, giving me an eyebrow raised in question. “I kinda fucked your sword up, mate, so… here you go.” I presented him with the Commander’s Sword. His eyes snapped up from the weapon to me in shock.

“Jax, there’s no need…” he started, and I shook my head.

“Seriously, mate, you’ve earned this, and you lead your team well. I’ll square it with the Legion Prefect if it’s an issue, so don’t worry about it.”

“I don’t know what to say…” he stammered, and I chuckled, clapping him on the shoulder.

“Try ‘Thank you,’ and bugger off,” I said, and his eyes took on a mischievous cast.

“Thank you and bugger off.” Then he winked and moved aside, examining the sword with awe. The other Legionnaires especially were a mixture of envious and impressed by Augustus’s new weapon.

“What’s all this crap about using Spellbooks?” Nerin said from the door, and I smiled brightly at her as she walked in, grumbling.

“Ah! Good of you to join us, Mistress Nerin…” I began, getting a glare from her in return.

“I had things to sort out, boy; not least, those patients that I help on a regular basis. You think a healer disappearing overnight wouldn’t cause a few deaths if people didn’t know?” She snapped, and I gaped at her in shock. “Don’t be foolish,” she said, rolling her eyes as she pushed past me to sit down. “I didn’t tell anyone anything I shouldn’t have; I just told those who needed to know that
