no more and your vision blacked out and you slowly faded away without giving any real fight to that damn plastic bag and the last thing your body does as it betrays you with its very human limitations is piss itself.

I swallowed hard, my throat drier than concrete dust.

My stress level tripled and my running reflex kicked in, but there was nowhere to run. Beads of sweat dotted my face. My skin itched with stress heat. I wanted to frantically scratch myself, but I couldnโ€™t with my power armor on. Strangling panic was eating me alive. Or the Death Sphere had secretly sent a swarm of evil nanobots to invade my armor and chew their way into my bloodstream and race toward my brain to set up shop and start demolishing my dendrites one by one, until every neuron in my brain was cut off from the rest, leaving me a flesh vegetable with soup for brains.

Ring! I thought frantically. Scan my body for invasive nanobots or Microservs or whatever you call them! Highlight them in yellow! Turn everything else dark blue!

The 3D MRI image appeared in my ring HUD. I scrolled through it, looking for any infinitesimal invaders. Didnโ€™t see any. Zoomed in closer and closer, convinced I wasnโ€™t seeing them but they were there anyway. Spent another 5 or 10 minutes scanning for maniacal Microservs that werenโ€™t there.

Not a one.

I was losing it.

Wasting valuable ring fuel chasing phantoms.

I needed to stay calm. Think through my options methodically and logically.

Otherwise I was dead.

Slain by this superior, vindictive and seemingly sentient space prison.

You better believe I was losing it.

โ€”: Chapter 86 :โ€”

I took several deep breaths to relax myself.

There were two things I hadnโ€™t tried.

I hadnโ€™t tried use my ringโ€™s POSITION or PATTERN functions to disrupt the Death Sphere.

First, I tried using a wide variety of POSITION vectors to force a hole in the shifting metal walls nearest me. Not by moving myself. By moving parts and pieces of the walls from a distance.

Unlike my MASS and ENERGY extraction which had range limitations, my POSITION vectors did not. I already knew from experience that I could extend a POSITION vector hundreds of kilometers away from my location and move things at a distance. I had done exactly that when Iโ€™d detonated those distant Stygian cruise missiles from the bridge of the Artemis. I had used a POSITION vector to physically rotate the missileโ€™s detonation circuit until it closed and exploded the missile.

So I used POSITION vectors now to tear away at the surrounding walls of the Death Sphere. No matter how frantically I applied vectors and tore sections away, they were quickly replaced by more mechanized and moving metal.

I tried a different approach: creating a hemispherical vector field 2 meters in diameter, using it like a 2-meter circular shield to push outward at the cage wall. The wall parted around the vector field like I had thrown a ball through smoke or fog or a cloud. It just opened up and let the vector field pass before snapping closed behind it.

But it had opened.

The question was, to where?

I tried again and kept my eye on the opening as I pushed the hemispherical vector field through the wall.

This time, I sawโ€ฆ more Death Sphere tunnel.

I had hoped maybe I would see space, stars, or Zalaxia.

No such luck.

I tried creating a hundred 2-meter hemispherical vector fields and pushing them outward in every direction simultaneously, hoping I could create more openings than the Death Sphere had mass to encapsulate.

Once again, the Death Sphere had mass to spare.

But I didnโ€™t have ring fuel to spare. My supply was dwindling quickly.

I stopped all POSITION vectors.

They were a waste of fuel.

This place had already thwarted three of my ringโ€™s most powerful weapons, and it appeared it might have more fuel than I did. It could easily outlast me, especially if it didnโ€™t need oxygen or heat to keep from freezing like I did.

The only thing left to attempt was a PATTERN alteration.

If that didnโ€™t work I had no idea what would.

โ€”: Chapter 87 :โ€”

The idea of patterns led me to the idea of puzzles.

I had always enjoyed the spatial pattern recognition and applied-algorithm appeal of puzzles like Rubikโ€™s Cube and its many derivatives. This was nothing like that. Those puzzles, even the seemingly complex ones, always had limits on the types of movements the puzzleโ€™s mechanism would allow. This infinitely variable Death Sphere had seemingly no limits to its mechanism. Pattern recognition and algorithms wouldnโ€™t help. I couldnโ€™t even break it apart like you could a Rubikโ€™s Cube when you decided to reassemble it instead of solving it.

There had to be some other pattern alteration I could attempt. Something I hadnโ€™t considered.

Something molecular?

Ring, turn the Death Sphere into pure helium gas.

Kra-KOOM!

An explosion rocked me backward and smashed me into the whirring wall behind me.

SCREENK!

That was the sound of something sawing through my power armor. Sparks flew. Stabbing pain as something wrenched into my shoulder blade. I vectored myself forward and away from the wall while I tried to make sense of what had happened.

SCRANK!

More sparks sprayed as I bounced off another section of wall and went somersaulting through open space.

After several lesser impacts, I sent out a powerful sphere of MASS extraction, forcing the living metal walls away from me.

I stopped bouncing but my back was on fire.

Ring, show me a temperature map of my body!

In my ring HUD, I could see that my body was a uniform orange but the back of my shoulder was cold blue. I wasnโ€™t on fire. I was freezing. There was a hole in my armor. Some spinning implement on the wall had cut through.

I quickly sent more heat ENERGY to warm my shoulder, then used my ringโ€™s COPY and PASTE functions to patch the holes in my armor.

Next was the hole in my shoulder. It throbbed with intense pain. Whatever had sawn into me had cut deep, severing muscle tissue all the way down to the bone
