Kain thanked Tala for not running and coming with him. He glanced at the moon and the sky, suggesting they head back.

Chapter Six

Tala sat on the nook in the windowsill looking out at the moon. The afternoon she spent with Kain brought about a dreamy sigh as she leaned back against the wall. His smile at the flower she’d given him made her believe a future with him might be possible.

Kain showed trust when he’d fallen asleep beside her. His gentle breathing almost lulled her to sleep.

In her heart, she wondered what it would be like to hunt with him beneath the moon’s light. It’d been so long since she’d changed.

She desired to forget the part of her that could drive a wedge between them, focusing on the majestic wolves they both harbored within them.

To satiate her need to change, Tala removed her clothes, leaving her naked. Her hourglass body illuminated by Luna’s glow. She tilted her head up, closing her eyes and taking in a deep breath.

She jumped from the window to the ground, shifting into her wolf form. Her heightened senses captured the sound of a deer padding through the woods. The musky scent of its fur traveled through the pine and cool of the night to fill her nostrils.

With great speed, Tala took off to find the source of the smell. When she found her prey, she crouched close to the ground, keeping silent while stalking through the brush.

Once she got close enough, Tala lowered in preparation to pounce. Snarling, she leapt, her fangs digging into the doe’s throat. Her size forced it to the ground so she could lap up the crimson fluid of its life.

It made her nauseous at how good it felt. Fearful thoughts of what Kain would think if he saw her infiltrated her mind, bringing about a sorrowful whimper. I don’t want him to see me as a monster. She thought closing her eyes tightly and raising her head to release a mournful howl.

Following her short hunt, Tala shifted from wolf to woman, the feeling exhilarating. She forgot how good changing from one form to another felt.

Using the tree beside the house, Tala jumped into her room through the window. The soft beginnings of a warm spring rain brought about the scent of fresh grass and newly reborn tree leaves.

Tala gathered some of the new clothes Jill let her borrow from the drawers and went to take a shower. The idea of being naked didn’t occur to her since she remembered lycans considered the body something not to be ashamed of.

She walked out into the hallway, surprised at how quiet the house was. The only sound she heard sounded like a gentle humming coming from the pups’ nursery.

On her way to the shower, she stopped by Kain’s door, leaning her forehead against it. The scent of him made her heart flutter. She thought about how badly she wanted to go in and tell him the truth. To throw caution to the wind and share the bond of blood so common for lycan pairs.

Tala raised her hand to knock but hesitated. If Kain was asleep, she didn’t want to wake him. Her eyes lowered, she decided to continue to the bathroom.

The room gradually filled with a thick steam as the shower heated.

With a dejected sigh, Tala dropped the fresh clothes into the sink and stepped into the shower. The water was so hot, she yelped in pain, turning down the temperature.

Sheets of the heated water gave Tala dreams of Kain’s warm, hard body pressed against hers. Images of him naked played in her mind. Memories of his fingers caressing her skin made her desire surge.

Moaning, Tala leaned against the tile. Her back arched as she imagined Kain’s strong hands holding her hips still against his sculpted stomach.

She purred his name, whispering how she loved him, how she wanted him so bad it ached.

Daydreams of him making love to her led her to spread the wet folds between her legs to find the tender nub already beginning to harden. She gasped as her fingers rubbed against it.

Tala groaned as she imagined Kain’s lips placing kisses on her back and shoulders. She could almost feel Kain’s hot breath in her ear, his hand holding her throat while his tongue tasted her skin.

Whimpers escaped her throat the higher her pleasure grew.

The carnal hunger of her darker side wanted nothing more than to take Kain. The possession of the vampire threatened to cloud her mind with thoughts of wanting to fight him. It wanted to take his blood and make him hers.

Tala shoved the darkness away, reaching her climax. She fought to keep quiet while her orgasm ravaged her body with pure, sexual pleasure. Shaking legs left her panting while she came down from her experience.

Tala hurried to turn off the water, struggling to keep her legs from going out from under her while she dried her hair and got dressed.

Kain finished readying himself to go on a morning run when the pattering of feet on the wooden stairs brought his attention to Tala.

She stood before him in a loose-fitting grey t-shirt and pastel pink pants. The high cut of the shirt allowed a peek at her flawless, muscular belly. The deep cut of the collar revealed her lack of a bra.

Kain grinned as he admired her body, betraying his need for affection. β€œGood morning. I thought you might still be asleep.”

Tala looked up at him, her cheeks red when she saw his hungry eyes. β€œMorning.”

A short silence ensued.

β€œI should be going,” Kain said, almost disappointed. He opened the door, ready to head out.

β€œWait!” Tala exclaimed. Her hand reached out to grab the black muscle shirt Kain wore.

Her sudden burst of confidence shocked Kain. The warmth of her against his back coupled with the firm grip she held on his shirt froze him in his steps.

β€œI need to tell you something,” she said in a low,
