βItβs good to have dreams and a goal,β Yukiko said. βThe future for all of us is a long road. If one strives and is earnest, then, in time, their dreams might come true.β
βWe should head back,β Jenn said to break up the conversation. βTomorrow comes early, and we will have studying to do.β
βIβll go see about the carriages,β Gregory said, getting to his feet. βBe back in a few minutes.β
Chapter Sixty-one
βApprentices, itβs good to see you today,β Rafiq greeted them. He placed two bags on the desk. βYesterday was a good day for some, terrible for others.β
βIt was, indeed,β Yukiko said, leaving the money where it was. βCould you take that and bet it again for us?β
βPerhaps. Iβm not sure the odds will be good, though.β
βWe have faith in them,β Jenn said. βMine, too, if itβs okay?β
βIf you hadnβt heard, thereβs a major bet on them to sweep again today,β Gregory grinned. βCarlisle bet against Warlin. If the novices sweep, Warlin will win over a half million. Ours seems paltry in comparison, but we still support them.β
Rafiq blinked, then his lips curled into a smile. βNow that is a big bet, indeed. Very well. Not sure I can do it again tomorrow, though.β
βThatβs fine. Take half of what is won today and place it on us to win the apprentice tournament, please,β Yukiko said, Jenn nodding along with her.
βVery well,β Rafiq nodded back, pulling the pouches off the desk. βAre your books still good for today, or did you require something new?β
βOur study material is fine right now, thank you,β Jenn said.
βGood studying to you all, then.β
They thanked him and went to their table. Theyβd just finished making their Magi Squares when Daciana came into view.
βLooking forward to your matches today?β Gregory asked Daciana as she neared the table.
βYes,β Daciana said, her tone subdued.
Surprised, Gregory was about to question her when Nessa and Victoria approached. They werenβt smiling as they normally would, either. Yukiko and Jenn both noticed their moods were different.
βNerves?β Gregory asked once all three novices sat down.
βWhat if we fail?β Daciana asked. βWhen we got back to the dormitory, we stayed up to talk for a bit.β
βAnd I mistakenly asked what if we fail...β Nessa said quietly.
βWeβve all been stuck on it since,β Victoria said, βeven Daciana.β
Gregory blinked. The fact that Daciana was stuck on the thought was surprising to him. βWhat are you all afraid of?β Gregory asked.
βNot being good enough,β Daciana said, her ears down and her tail curled under her.
βThat weβll be excluded from the clan,β Nessa added.
βThat Iβll be the only one who isnβt allowed in,β Victoria said.
βYou think losing a single fight will do that?β Jenn asked.
βMaybe not a single fight, but two might,β Nessa said.
βI lost to Gregory on the first day,β Yukiko said. βI still made it to the final eight because I won every other match.β
βI made it in with a single loss, too,β Jenn said.
βAnd even if you lose twice or more, itβll be fine,β Gregory said. βAs long as you give everything you have to win, itβll be enough. Donβt think about losingβ yeah, it might happen. I should have lost to Jenn and again to Jason in the finals, but I didnβt because I never stopped trying. You might end up against someone who just wants it more than you do, no matter how much you want it. I did, which is why Jenn won the second tournament.β
The novices were staring at him, hoping to hear something to help them.
βI donβt think youβll lose,β he said, looking each one in the eyes, βif you have the fire to prove yourselves that Iβve seen in you since you started working for it. Grab that dream you hold and focus on itβ use it to help push you. The only way to truly fail is to quit. I donβt think my friends are the kind to give up, are they?β
The challenge in his words had all three women staring him down.
βI will never give up my goal,β Daciana growled, her lips pulled back in a snarl.
βIβll outpace my fear and prove to you that I can catch my dream,β Nessa said, her tail flicking in agitation.
Victoria smiled softly, brushing her hair back behind her ear. βI feel like an idiotβ¦ like a child afraid of the dark that had to be shown the noise outside was just the tree scratching at the shutters. Thank you, Greg. Iβll be in the finals with them. Weβll win.β
βDamned right, we will,β Daciana said, nodding sharply.
βFriends can help pull you up, as well as push you to do more,β Nessa smiled. βThanks for the hand up.β
βItβs just who he is,β Yukiko said fondly. βWeβll be right there in the stands beside your families, cheering for you. We know youβll win today, tomorrow, and into the finals.β
βWe believe in you, so believe in yourselves,β Jenn said. βWeβll be looking forward to standing with you on the sands to accept our rewards from the council.β
βStupid...β Daciana huffed. βWe have studying to do.β
βWe do, indeed,β Yukiko agreed.
~*~*~
They had taken their seats, and a few other students and magi were still getting settled as the seventh bell rang. Gregory wondered if Carlisle would show up again or choose a different place to sit. He might want to stay away in case they winβ heβd want to avoid the embarrassment. Then again, heβd want to be here if they lose so he can declare just how βsmartβ he is. Hmm... which is more likely? He was still pondering when Hao and the others arrived.
βHere all day again?β Hao asked Lightshield as he took his
