Moto shook his head. "I can't leave her."
"Why?" Sari asked.
Moto took a deep breath. "She is having night terrors. I have to be here to help her through them."
"How long has she been having night terrors?" Sari touched Kaily's forehead and closed her eyes.
"A while," Moto said. He didn't like the strain on Sari's face as she concentrated. He could feel how tired she was.
"How long?" Sari repeated her question.
"They started ten maybe eleven days ago, with the exception of when we were on her home world. She didn't have the night terrors there." Moto was taken aback by the curse that came from Sari.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Sari asked.
"Why would I tell you? I had no idea of your abilities," Moto said. "Can you help her or not?"
Sari shook her head and rubbed her temples. "Not permanently. Only Kaily can help herself by facing them." Sari's gaze met Shimani's.
Moto pushed the hair back from Kaily's face. "So, I keep telling her."
"I can help keep them from bothering her tonight."
"How?"
"By putting her into a deep sleep," Sari explained. She looked at Moto in a way he could not decipher. She turned her attention to Shimani. "We need to put Kaily into a deep sleep, so she doesn't dream, and right now I'm too tired to pull enough energy to do it. Do you think you can, if I show you how?"
Shimani cast a similar look at Moto before answering Sari. "I already know how." He knelt in front of Moto and Kaily and laid a hand on Kaily's forehead.
Moto glared and him and Sari but remained silent. He knew both felt his emotions and how angry he was with them. Fortunately, for them, Kaily's well-being took precedence.
Shimani finished and inclined his head to Moto.
Moto's censoring glare remained locked on Shimani who had the good sense to look away. He stood and gathered the bag with the things he brought for Sari.
Sari placed a hand on Moto's shoulder, drawing his attention. "Rest with Kaily you look exhausted. Shimani and I will return this evening before the evening repast begins." Shimani helped her stand and kept an arm around her waist for support.
Moto nodded. He remained where he was as he watched them leave. Once they were out of the cave, he placed Kaily on the pallets and stretching out beside her. He gathered her in his arms and covered them both with the blankets. He tried to maintain his lock onto her mind. It was difficult to maintain that level of concentration when his body cried out for sleep. He was half afraid to allow himself to rest. He didn't all together trust what Shimani did would actually keep Kaily's night terrors from surfacing. He was exhausted and needed sleep as badly as she did.
He thought about what he saw Sari and Shimani do. None of what he witnessed was Kahoali abilities, none of it. Yet, he saw it and felt the power that surrounded them. He even felt the power emanating from Shimani and the peace that slipped into Kaily's mind when Shimani put her into a deep sleep. That same peace still lingered in her mind and she rested soundly in his arms. There was no remnant of her night terrors. From what he witnessed; it was apparent that the Kahoali were capable of so much more than even he believed. Despite his own abilities that were beyond what other Kahoali could do, it surprised him what Shimani and Sari just did.
Kaily was right there was more going on than either of them knew. Somehow, he would force answers from both Sari and Shimani, just as soon as his Kaily was out of danger. He glanced to the back of the cave and the destruction, evidence of just how dangerous she was to herself and those around her. He tightened his hold on her. He needed to find a way to help her, for both their sake.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Kaily exhaled as the fog of sleep receded from her mind. She felt as if she dreamt, but she could not recall what she dreamt about. Her heart pounded in her chest and she felt a thin sheen of sweat layering her body. She shivered as the cold surrounding her slowly seeped into her mind. She heard the fire crackling and felt the heat from it at her back, but still, she felt a bone deep, weary chill. She could not rid herself of the sensation. Even with Moto's arms locking her to him, she did not feel the warmth his body offered.
"We need to talk." A sharp male voice said, intruding upon her thoughts.
Kaily's eyes flew to the entrance where Shimani leaned against the stone entrance with his arms crossed over his chest. She drew the blanket up to her chin, acutely aware that she and Moto were both naked beneath the covers. Why Moto persisted in sleeping naked she didn't understand, and he always managed to get her clothes off before they slept. She blushed as she thought about how he got her clothes off her. "Moto is not going to be happy you're here when he wakes." She told Shimani. Why was Moto still sleeping? She wondered. She touched Moto's mind and felt the peaceful slumber within it. He hardly ever slept this late. She could tell from the light streaming in through the entrance where Shimani drew back the covering that it was quit late, probably getting to be late afternoon. Why had she slept so late?
"Moto is not going to wake until I wake him." Shimani said. He didn't move from the entrance.
"Why?" She would have sat up if she could have managed it without risk of further embarrassment. "What did you do to him?"
"I left a cup for you on the table to help with your headache." Shimani didn't respond to her question.
"What headache?" She asked and
