The Health and Stamina potions were both ‘Greater’ potions as well, which was a relief. I passed one of the mana potions to Arrin and kept the other, passing out Health and Stamina potions to any of the group that needed them, seeing we’d gone through a lot of the healing ones in that last fight.
I passed the two rings of Dexterity to Stephanos and Miren, figuring the ability to fire faster would be a boon, and took one of both the ‘Healthy Body’ rings and the ‘Buffalo’ for myself, handing the others to Lydia, along with a shield. I also gave the earrings to Miren and Stephanos, which seemed a little unfair, as Bane and Arrin got nothing, but it seemed like the best way to divide the gear.
With no further preparations to be made, I settled into the nearest chair, drank a little water, and rested before the next fight, quickly bringing up the last fight’s notifications and dismissing them as soon as I’d checked my experience.
Congratulations! You have killed the following:
1x ‘Twin of Destruction’ Torin Alderbright for a total of 7,800xp
A party under your command killed the following:
1x ‘Twin of Destruction’ Terin Alderbright for a total of 7,800xp
2x Rogues of various levels for a total of 6,160xp
Total Party exp earned: 13,960xp
As party leader you gain 25% of all experience earned
Progress to level 16 stands at 112,598/165,000
I was close enough that I could almost taste the next level. Apparently, from fifteen onward, your choices started to come with occasional ‘Abilities’ that were either a development of your personal choices, gifts from the Gods, or something else, depending on your own beliefs.
I just knew for sure that I’d get seven more stat points, and hell if I wasn’t ready for that.
“Hey, Augustus…” I said suddenly, as a thought sprang to mind. “Essence Cores; I’ve heard there’s a shop in the city that buys them, but that some people collect them. Don’t suppose we got one for the Teradon, did we?”
“No, some monsters drop them, but that one didn’t. Why?” He replied curiously as I grunted in disappointment.
“Damn… ah, well. I’ve got a use for them, that’s all. Could have made a hell of a difference.”
“Really?” He asked surprised, then raised his voice. “Legion!” he commanded, and all conversations stopped as people turned to look at him. “Essence Cores; does anyone have one with them?” he asked. To my amazement, two people held up their hands, then made their way over to us.
The pair handed their cores over, the orbs bound by simple chains to a necklace and wrist strap, and I looked at them in confusion.
“Why…” I started to ask.
“For luck!” Augustus said, grinning. “The cores are only worth a few gold to the stores that will take them, but they rarely pay more than that. They’re pretty, and only the strongest monsters have them, so most people keep them as souvenirs. My own are back at the Enclave; some bastard stole the one I wear when we were out and about over the last few days…” he finished blackly. “Damn pickpockets.”
I examined the two cores in stunned amazement for a moment, before ‘Examining’ them.

“Holy shit,” I muttered, staring at the small orbs. “I don’t know which one, but I think I’m going to need one of these over the next few weeks. Would you be willing to sell them?” I asked the Legionnaires, looking from one to the other. “You said they’re worth a handful of gold. If I give you a hundred, would that be enough?” Their eyes bugged out slightly as they gaped at each other in astonishment.
“Seriously, Jax, they’re worth nowhere near that,” Augustus said, frowning in confusion.
“We’ll give them to you for free, my lord, if they’ll help,” one of the Legionnaires offered, smiling.
“Hell, no, you won’t,” I said. “I’ll buy them, and as many as you get. They’re more valuable than the nobility have let you know. I don’t know how to do it for you, but they can be used to unlock abilities. It’s a rare thing, from what I understand. My own ability to use them is tied to my bloodline and the Pearl I received before coming here, but if I can, I’ll find a way to unlock these for all of you. Just don’t hold your breath; the person who explained the whole thing to me was a dick and lied whenever he thought it was amusing.” I looked up, addressing the entire room. “For now, I’ll ask that any of these you get, you surrender to the treasury, because some have some very nasty side effects. If you use those, you might regret it later. I’d rather we took it slow and careful. If you get any of these, though, I’ll pay the same hundred gold for each of them.” Nods and grins rose from the people around the room, and Nerin sighed and straightened up, her hand going into the neckline of her dress.
“I also have one, but I’d ask you not take it unless you have to; it’s a family heirloom,” she said, handing it over.
