was missing the tendrils that helped him to see on one side, he was burned, had frostbite, and was bleeding internally, and was down to eleven health, his bleeding was that bad.

I concentrated on the internals first, making the veins and the liver equivalent heal themselves. I stopped shy of a full regeneration of them, moving on, picking the injuries one at a time and repairing frantically, even as Grizz tried to slow the bleeding and Yen searched for other healing or mana potions.

“Search the bodies!” Grizz called out, the command clear in his voice. “Any healing or mana potions, I need them, NOW!”

I shifted my focus, flowing into Bane’s chest, then out, passing through the heart and along the arteries, fixing as I went. I left Yen and Grizz to deal with the outside, and I concentrated on the worst of the internal injuries, working as fast as I could.

Minutes passed in a blur, and I sagged back again, frantically trying to blink the mana-migraine away as my mana bottomed out. I looked at Bane, terrified I was going to lose him.

I’d heard Yen’s assurances of Tang’s status; he was beaten up pretty badly, and the spell they were using on him was nasty, but he would survive, with a little rest and food.

Neither of which we had time to provide, but we had no choice, either.

“Grizz,” I said, sitting with my eyes closed as Yen worked on Bane, finishing off the bandaging and muttering about wounds that wouldn’t close.

“Yeah, boss?” He asked quietly.

“I want to know what the fuck they did to Bane, and I want them all searched for any healing or mana potions. If they’ve kept them hidden while Bane’s dying…”

“I’ll make sure they understand,” Grizz said in a low growl. “As to the mages… one’s unconscious, and the other is bleeding out; want either to survive?”

“Question them for now, but don’t be gentle about it,” I growled viciously. “Yen, I’m going to meditate quickly; keep him going as long as you can. When it’s getting bad, interrupt me, and I’ll heal him with whatever I’ve managed to gain.”

“Yes, Jax,” she said simply, her eyes far away as she read information on Bane granted by her skills.

I settled back, ignoring the sudden scream that rose from further up the corridor, and the low, angry sound of Grizz interrogating the mage who’d been trying to crawl away.

I managed just over twenty minutes before Yen disturbed me, and the news she had wasn’t good.

I checked my mana as I straightened, grateful that I’d managed to make it all the way up to eleven points per minute, reaching the heady heights of two hundred and thirty-three points, and I sighed in relief. Surely, that would be enough to heal both Tang and Bane?

“Jax, I don’t think we can save Bane,” she said softly, and my heart plummeted. I stared down at my friend, seeing the blood seeping through the bandages.

“I’ve got more mana now…” I argued, shaking my head. “We can save him; I just need to…”

“I used a class ability to see what caused the wounds, Jax, and they were made with this.” She grimly flicked a notification to me as she pointed to the bandages that were clearly leaking through quickly. I opened the notification, accepting the information.

“Motherfucker!” I growled out, turning to see Grizz waiting grimly off to one side. The injured mage laid in a still heap, with the unconscious one close by.

There were no mana or health potions, but there were a number of rings and other trinkets waiting to be examined.

I looked at Bane, swallowed hard at the thought of losing him, and shook my head firmly.

“No, fuck this. It says they’re ALMOST impossible to heal. That means there’s a chance. Nobody would be carrying a weapon like this if they didn’t know a way to stop it, or nicking their finger would be a death sentence. Who had it?” I asked grimly.

“Their noble. He apparently was waiting further up the tunnel, and he ran with his guards when the fight started to go against them,” Grizz said.

“Tell me the rest,” I insisted, sensing there was more to come.

“They captured Bane with a spell-net, shocked him, and tried to question him. He refused to answer their questions, and the noble ordered him beaten until he changed his mind. He gave them nothing, so when they caught Tang, the noble stabbed Bane a few times with his dagger; then they fled, waiting to see what would happen.”

“He dies,” I said flatly. “That cocksucking noble dies, slowly.”

“By your word, Lord Jax,” Grizz said in grim agreement.

“How did they capture them, but not us? Hell, with Bane’s abilities…” I asked, and Yen spoke up again.

“My abilities as a member of the Praetoria can tell me a lot, such as the weapon used for an attack, but not everything, Jax. I can sense a lot of magic, though, so I’d guess at an artifact, something used to conceal them. Then by the time we came along, it’d either failed or run out of mana, or… who knows. All I know is I smelled blood, and I reacted.”

“And thank the gods you did,” Grizz said as Arrin moved over to join us. He nodded once to me, still clearly embarrassed, but he reached out and healed Bane, before groaning and sitting back.

“That’s all I’d managed to regenerate… I’m sorry,” he said, shame clear in his voice.

“It’s fine. Thank you for that, Arrin.” I dismissed him, and he went back to join the others, watching over the group of prisoners.

“Who are they?” I asked, and Yen spoke almost absently as she tried to rewrap the bandages on Bane’s arm.

“The researchers for the Narkolt party. The noble Joshua apparently brought
