βAny idea who would want him dead?β Vega asked.
I circled the bed, remembering what Arnaud had told me on the pier: Sonny has been involved with many people. And for some, thatβs a problem. βThe question is why someone would want him dead now.β
βMaybe someone observed our earlier visits,β Vega said.
βYeah, thatβs what Iβm thinking.β
I leaned over Sonnyβs body. Several small perforations pocked his face. I reached into my coat, pulled out my notepad, and drew the pencil from the spiral binding. With the pencilβs sharpened tip, I probed a perforation on his cheek until I encountered something hard.
βWhat the hell are you doing?β Vega asked.
I pried a small shot free and placed it in my palm for Vega to see. βSilver ammo,β I said. βIβll bet you anything itβs the same ammo that did damage to Blondie earlier tonight.β
βThe vampire hunters?β
I nodded, thinking of Bulletβs pump-action shotgun. βDid Hoffman know we interviewed Sonny?β
βHe knew about our first interview, yeah. I told him before he went off in search of the plans for Ferguson Towers.β Vegaβs eyebrows crushed down as she made the connection. βThat means he turned around and informed the person who hired the vampire hunters.β
βThe client must have thrown in a bonus for Sonny.β
βKill the hybrid, kill its origin story,β Vega said.
βTells me someone wants to bury the matter in the worst way.β A disturbing thought came to me. βDid Hoffman know about our trip to the boarding school or to Lady Bastet?β
βI didnβt tell anyone about those.β
βGood. Letβs keep it that way.β The world wasnβt going to miss Sonny, but I didnβt want innocents becoming targets. βLetβs head down to Sonnyβs office. I want to check out those files.β
βWhy? All he has down there are names and tax IDs. They wonβt mean anything to us. The whole point of coming here was to get him to identify her.β She shot Sonnyβs corpse an exasperated look that seemed to blame him for his own death.
βWell, we wonβt know unless we look.β
βWhat do you know?β I said, stooped in front of the file cabinet drawer labeled 2001.
βWhat?β Vega came up behind me.
βThe entire second half of the year is missing.β
βProbably when Alexandraβs mother started here,β Vega said. βThe mysterious client had the vampire hunters grab six monthsβ worth of hires to bury the name he or she was trying to hide.β
I lifted out the files for the first half of the year.
βWhat are you doing?β Vega asked.
βHere.β I handed half of the files to her. βLook for any unusual last names. Dancers who would be easy to track down. If they were hired before Alexandraβs mother, they might still have been here when she came on board. They might be able to give us a name. We can show them the photo of Alexandra. Seems she inherited her motherβs good looks. She sure doesnβt resemble Sonny.β
βA blessing for her,β Vega muttered.
We carried the files to Sonnyβs desk and set up on either side.
I was halfway through the March hires when a name jumped out at me.
βHey,β I said. βThat dancer who came into the office earlier today. What did Sonny call her?β
Vega grimaced. βYou mean besides βsugarβ? Casey.β
βThereβs a Casey right here. And didnβt Sonny say sheβd been with him for almost twenty years?β
At that moment, the door to the office opened, and the six-and-a-half-foot bouncer who had admitted us poked his head in. βYou two gonna be in here much longer?β
βAs long as it takes,β Vega told him.
βItβs justβ¦β The bouncer scratched his curly hair and glanced behind him. βI know youβre police and all, but the boss donβt like people nosing around his stuff. He might smile and play nice when youβre here, but he takes it out on the rest of us when youβre not. Heβs got a temper like a pit bull.β
βI donβt think thatβs going to be a problem anymore,β I said.
βWhere can we find Casey?β Vega asked.
βCasey? She worked a double today. Sheβs in the dressing room on a smoke break.β
βCan you ask her to come in here?β Vega said.
βI can ask.β
The bouncer disappeared. A minute later, Casey stood in the doorway in a pink silk robe, her red hair pinned up in a messy pile. She placed a hand on a cocked hip, a stench of cigarette smoke and perfume radiating off her.
βWhat?β she demanded.
Vega gestured to the chair next to mine. βHave a seat.β
βWhy?β
βRelax,β Vega said. βWe just want to ask you a couple questions.β
Casey shot me a sour smile as she landed in the chair.
βIs your full name Casey Lusk?β Vega asked.
βWhat if it is?β
βDo you remember when you were hired?β
βNo.β
βDoes March 2001 ring a bell?β
βNot really.β She crossed her long legs.
βA young woman was hired shortly after you,β Vega said, pulling out Alexandraβs photo and placing it on the desk in front of Casey. βShe would have looked like this, but with hair to her waist.β
Casey scowled at the photo.
βYou knew her?β I took out my notepad.
βShe played little Miss Innocent, but she didnβt fool me. Manipulative piece of trash. Had Sonny wrapped around her pinky finger. She even got him to propose to her.β She let out a sharp laugh. βCan you imagine that? Sonny? Married?β
βCan you give us a name?β I asked.
βChastity Summers,β Casey said with exaggerated sweetness.
I jotted the name down and looked up to find Vegaβs dark eyes staring back at me. I nodded. We might have just connected the final dot. But man, the detective was not looking good. Way too pale.
βWhatever became of Chastity?β Vega asked.
Casey shrugged. βHell if I know. She was here for about six months and then took off. Sonny moped for the next year. Serves him right, the dumb bastard. Tried to warn him she would rip his heart out.β
βAnd she never showed up here again?β I asked.
βNope.β
βDo you know anyone who mightβve kept up with her?β
βKept up with her? We
