the world. I want to make this right with you. I can’t stand the thought of being apart.” He kissed her again. “Be mine.”

“I thought you weren’t asking me?”

“Tell me if I got it right.”

She chuckled. “I love you, Sarge, so much.”

He pulled her close, kissing her again. Breaking from the kiss, he trailed his lips to her ear. “I don’t have a ring on me. It’s back at the office.”

“I’ve got a surprise for you, Sarge, I don’t need one.” She cupped his face and kissed him back. After running his hands down her back, he cupped her ass, and fuck, it felt good to stake his claim on her. Never again was he going to allow anyone else the chance to have what belonged to him.

Epilogue

Christmastime the same year

“Let me get the champagne. The boss didn’t skimp on the good stuff this year,” Cherry said, letting out a whoop.

Talia laughed along with her as she came closer.

“Not you, my darling, as you’re still breastfeeding. So cute.” Cherry ran a finger down her daughter’s cheek. She was only three months old, but growing so fast. She glanced over Cherry’s shoulder to see her husband, the man who had given her a year unlike any other.

She had thought he’d proposed because of the baby, but in fact, on Valentine’s Day, he’d been planning to make her his, and she loved him so damn much. They’d had quite a year so far. She’d scared him half to death during her labor with Anna. She kissed the top of her head as Sarge made his way over.

He held out a bottle of water for her to drink, taking Anna from her as she sipped.

“Are you having a good time?”

“This is so much better than last year.” It had been her idea to host a Christmas party for the whole staff. They had a small buffet of food, drinks, music, dancing. It was nice. It gave them all a chance to come together, to have some fun. She was amazed by how many women had families, but also the men.

She smiled as she watched everyone.

“I love it when you look like that,” he said, tilting her head back, kissing her.

“Happy?”

“Yes.”

“Why?” she asked.

“It means I’m getting some shit right and that, baby, is more important to me than anything.”

All of a sudden, Anna started to make a fuss, and like always, her breasts chose that moment to make her aware. “I better go and start feeding her. I’ll be back.” She took Anna, making her way to the privacy of his office. She still worked the bar. They were a team. Sitting in the chair he’d purchased so she could relax and feed their daughter, she got comfortable, and while Anna latched on, she sighed. The glint of her wedding band caught her attention and she smiled.

Her life had taken so much of a turn, there were times she had to pinch herself to believe it was real.

Minutes passed and when Sarge cleared his throat, she was expecting it. He always came to sit with her when he could to watch.

She looked up. “Hey,” she said.

“Merry Christmas, baby.”

“Merry Christmas.” She held her hand out. He closed the door, coming to sit with her. He ran his finger across their daughter’s head.

“You two are so precious to me,” he said.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.” He kissed her head, and she closed her eyes, thankful for how lucky she’d gotten. She had a beautiful, healthy baby and a loving husband, friends, and life was perfect.

Emily

I thought about death a lot. It wasn’t morbid or for some quest to finally find the end. At eighteen years old, I hadn’t really lived. There had to be more to life than this empty shell of nothing. Life seemed to be playing out, and the longer I was part of it, the less I seemed to be relevant. I didn’t fit in. I wasn’t part of any crowd. To most, I was a loser. I didn’t mind. It helped me to dwell in my thoughts of death. For all I knew, a lot of kids thought of dying. About how their final moments on this very earth were going to go.

Glancing around the cafeteria, I couldn’t help but wonder if that wasn’t a whole crock of shit. The pretty girls. All with their long hair, styled pretty much the same, but there was always one girl who liked to change it up. For the team here, it was Nancy. She ran with the pack but the truth was, she danced above them all.

Then, of course, around them were the jocks. The football crew who believed they ruled the entire school, but the truth was they weren’t in charge, not really. I’d firsthand seen them really bowing down to one group of people, and they sat in the corner. No one messed with them.

Monsters’ Crew or the Monsters’ Boys. Depending on who you spoke to. Caleb Falls, River Block, Gael Parson, and finally, Vadik Keller. All of them deadly. No one crossed them. Even now as I glanced at them, I saw River with a knife between his fingers. He flicked the blade back and forth as if it
