And then there was Kadey.
The kid had these men wrapped around her sassy little finger.
Missyβs door was already cracked when we reached her apartment, her face just peeking through the gap.
I tucked my phone back in my pocket and pressed my hand to the door. βBabyβ¦β It slowly swung back, the light from the hallway illuminating her face. βMotherfucker,β I cursed, seeing the darkening bruise across her cheek and the swelling around her eye. There was a split in the corner of her mouth, and her hair was a mess, matted and sticking up all over the place.
But it was the blood that had me standing taller.
βYour blood or theirs?β I ground out through my teeth.
βBoth, I think.β She lifted one of her hands, and it was completely stained red. I reached out, pulling it closer and instantly noticing the deep slice in the side of her pointer finger.
βCain, call doc, tell him to meet us at the clubhouse,β Bishop ordered, assessing the wound over my shoulder. βThatβs gonna need stitches, Miss.β
Her eyes fluttered down to where I was still holding her hand, and she huffed. βI honestly didnβt even notice.β She was fighting it, trying to keep her chin high, trying to keep her shit together, but I knew it wouldnβt be long before the rush was gone, and the crash came.
And when it hit, it was going to hit hard.
βWell, youβre gonna notice very soon when that adrenaline wears off,β I answered, slowly directing her backward into the apartment so we could get out of the hall. The last thing I needed right now was for someone to see us armed and call the fucking cops. βHowβd you cut this?β
She frowned, tilting her head to the side as she studied the wound. She was dazed and in shock. I wanted to wrap her up and promise her it would be okay, but first, I needed to make sure the situation was sorted, so I knew she was safe. βProbably when I grabbed the knife from the drawer.β
Fuck me.
βOkay, whereβs the knife now?β
She pointed to the kitchen, and at first, I couldnβt see what she was trying to show me, so I finally let her hand go and stepped carefully around her and into the kitchen, trying my best to avoid the blood that was smeared across the 1990s linoleum, so it wouldnβt get on my boots.
βFucking hell,β Blue muttered, shaking his head as he walked in from the other side of the counter, both of us seeing him at the same time.
βMale, dressed in black, face covered,β I announced to my men before looking to Missy and adding, βLarge knife sticking out of his stomach. Blood everywhere.β
βI killed him,β she whispered, her lip trembling. βHe came at me and attacked me. He kept talking about her.β
βCheck the other rooms, then make the call to get this place cleaned up,β Bishop ordered as he slipped in beside Missy, placing his hand on her shoulder and turning her toward him. Cain and Bounty instantly moved to the bedrooms with their weapons drawn. βTalking about who?β Bishop questioned, his brows raised.
I placed my gun on the counter, certain now the threat was gone.
βKadey,β Missy answered, her tone much more solid as she talked about her baby. βHe kept asking where Kadey was.β
I placed my palms on the counter and leaned in, my muscles tightening at the thought of this asshole being here for that little girl. What the fuck would he want with her? I didnβt want to think about it. βHave you checked on her?β
Missy sighed. βYeah, I called Mrs. Dawson, told her not to worry, that Iβd explain later. But she said Kadeyβs fine. In bed snoring.β The more she talked, the more I could hear that tension leaving her body.
βYou did good, baby,β I told her, her eyes meeting mine. She was petrified, scared as fucking hell, but sheβd fought back, and sheβd won. βYou did fucking good.β
βI killed someone,β she whispered, a tear dripping down onto her cheek. βWhat about the police. What am I going to say? It will be self-defense, wonβt it?β
I smirked as she rattled on, Bishop squeezing her shoulder in support, but his smile mirroring mine. βWe arenβt calling the police. Weβll deal with this, donβt you worry.β I turned and crouched down beside the body while Bishop continued to chat with Missy. βWhat else did he say. Anything you can remember that could be important.β
Pinching the fabric that covers the guyβs mouth, I tugged it down under his chin so I could see his face.
βHe said she was the chosen one.β
My heart stalled, her words hitting my ears at the same time I realized the dead guy on the floor wasnβt a stranger.
I knew him.
Iβd grown up with him.
We shared DNA.
βIsaac.β I got to my feet quickly, staring down in horror at my biological brother.
Bishop was soon right beside me, scrubbing at his face with his hand. βWhat the fuck is going on here?β
βThey think Kadey is the chosen one,β I murmured under my breath. βThey fucking sent someone from the militia to get her.β
The Valley had its own army. A group of men who were trained like military soldiers and basically made sure people were doing what they were told. They patrolled the edges of The Valley at night, and Iβd heard plenty of fucking stories about what they do to people who tried to escape.
Even worse than what they tried to do to me.
I shook my head, attempting to figure out what the fuck would lead them to believe Kadey was some fucking chosen child. How did they even know she existed?
βHawk?β
I broke away from Bishop, taking Missyβs good hand and leading her to the table. I lifted her onto it and spread her legs, slipping in between them. Unconsciously, her head dropped forward, her forehead pressing against my chest while she gripped
