Chapter Three

I dismissed the notifications and climbed back to my feet, thanking the others for their concern. As I came face to face with Fenris, I grimaced and began sorting through the prompts for the one Iโ€™d seen relating to its inventory. I selected โ€˜Yes,โ€™ and a ten-by-ten grid appeared before me. It was empty, of course; as much as Iโ€™d have loved to find a set of magical fucking armor and a god damn shield in there, of course, nothing was that easy.

I concentrated, and Fenris reacted smoothly, making me sigh with relief as it trotted to the piles of gear and lowered its head. The mouth split apart to reveal the familiar dimensional rift of a Bag of Holding. Or, in this case, a Horse of Holdingโ€ฆ  Seconds later, each item disappeared into its storage easily. As Fenris worked, I took the time to examine the loot, discovering that the sets of Drow armor, weapons, and personal effects were easily the best of the gear.

I also checked through the gear and the general loot that the smugglers had been carrying. Most of the smugglerโ€™s gear was primarily a collection of powders that I assumed to be drugs, booze, and some metals that I assumed were more valuable in the city than in smaller towns, judging from the common quality of them.

There were also a handful of manastones, which weโ€™d be keeping. Six large skins, which looked great, but were a bit weird, were revealed by my โ€˜Examineโ€™ skill as โ€˜Rareโ€™ and that they were Jumna skins, whatever that meant. There were crates of meat, which the Drow had been eating, as well as three smaller crates crafted of the enchanted wood. All of it went into Fenris, except for a small, ludicrously ornately carved box that contained worms, of all things.

I shrugged and was about to toss that in as well, when Bane stopped me.

โ€œThe storage in Bags of Holding cannot store living tissue, or so I have heard,โ€ he said quietly, and I paused.

โ€œOkay, but are these things valuable at all? I meanโ€ฆโ€

โ€œExtremely,โ€ said Yen, glaring at the remaining smugglers, who all looked stunned.

โ€œWhat am I missing?โ€ I asked the room, as everyone clustered in around to look at the weird little worms.

โ€œTheyโ€™re silkworms, Jax,โ€ Yen said, reaching out one hand to gently stroke one. She carefully pulled her finger back as it curled up, and a small strand of glistening thread pushed out of its end.

โ€œRightโ€ฆ thatโ€™s nice.โ€ I said, and she shook her head, grinning.

โ€œSilkworms cost an absolute fortune, because if you can breed them, youโ€™ve got a steady supply of free silk. All it costs you are leaves, which are cheap as all hell.โ€

โ€œSo, theyโ€™re controlled, then?โ€ I guessed, and she nodded.

โ€œThe noble houses all got to be filthy rich because they control something everyone else needs. The Mori family has an iron grip on all of the silkworms in the city, and as far
