βHmmβ¦ I donβt know. We avoided them as much as we could. But I guess he did act civilly during the second tournament,β Gregory said.
βSwift Wind might not be an ally, but they arenβt an active foe like the Eternal Flame,β Yukiko said. βNow, shall we play a three-way game? We can ask that they leave the table alone so we can continue it over the next few days.β
βI like that idea. Iβll take the empire,β Jenn said.
βIβll take Buldoun,β Yukiko said. βI need to look into more what they can and canβt do.β
βHmm, give me Krogga. Weβll set it at the border, so we can all have a place to retreat to.β
βItβs been decades since a war enveloped multiple nations,β Yukiko said, βbut it will make it fair this way.β She paused, then gave Gregory a hard look. βNo foresight.β
βI was hoping you wouldnβt think of it,β Gregory chuckled. βI wasnβt going to use itβ¦ not often, anyway.β
Jenn shook her head. βIβm fairly certain that whoever instructs us next year will say the same thing.β
βWhich hampers us a little,β Gregory countered. βThere are no foresight magi in the decks. I wonder what theyβll do about that?β
Yukiko looked thoughtful. βI suppose we will see when we get there. For now, weβll just have to let you pick a magi commander. Itβll do us good to get used to all of them, as it is.β
βOkay,β Gregory said as he picked up the commander cards for the empire. βPhysical enhancement for Jennβ¦β
Chapter Eight
The bar was being tended by an older man with thinning white hair. βApprentices, I will get the breakfast that was made for you. Give me one moment.β
βThank you, sir,β Yukiko smiled. βWeβll be at the table by the window.β
βThe game last night was frustrating,β Jenn said. βWe didnβt play with the other nations with our instructors. The rules for them are different enough that I still donβt know what to expect.β
Gregory nodded. βKrogga has the zealots. Thatβs the only reason I was able to hold off your push just before bed.β
βBuldounβs armies can equip at such a reduced cost that fielding the advanced armies is nearly trivial,β Yukiko mused. βOf course, getting a magi onto the field is incredibly difficult and gets more expensive the longer I keep them there.β
βYour troops still carved through the zealots,β Gregory reminded her. βThey might be able to ignore magi, but troops with gear cut through them like a hot knife through butter.β
βI almost felt bad about that,β Yukiko grinned, βbut then Jenn used the magi that survived you to take half of them off the board.β
The old man brought a tray of food to their table. βYour meal, magi. Are you playing Empireβs Gambit already? I thought that was reserved for your upcoming year.β
βWe are, and it is,β Gregory responded. βWe like to be ahead, if possible.β
βThe forward-thinking ones do,β the old man chuckled as he served them. βThe tea will help cut the aether of the food if you require it. That is what the note with it said.β
βThank you, sir,β Yukiko beamed at him. βWeβll be keeping to this schedule as long as we are here.β
βI will make sure that Gordon knows. Enjoy your food.β
βSir, whatβs your name?β Jenn called out to him.
βIβm Leroy Brown, miss. My older brother is the chef. Enjoy your meal.β
Gregory frowned at his plate, not understanding what he was looking at. βYuki, do you have any idea?β
βNo,β Yukiko said, βthough I think itβs egg-based. Jenn?β
βI have no idea,β Jenn said. βDinner was really good, though, so Iβm sure this will be, too.β
βIβm going to give it a try,β Gregory said. He picked up the pie-shaped food and bit into it. Chewing slowly, he smiled as he savored the moment.
When Yukiko and Jenn both saw him enjoying it, they sampled theirs.
βThis isβ¦β Gregory trailed off, unsure of how to properly phrase it. He set the food back on the plate and poured tea for them. βI wouldnβt think to use egg as a pie, nor the sweet squash as a filling for it. The creamy cheese flavor helps pull it together with the spices.β
βIt is good,β Yukiko said as she set her slice down and exhaled slowly. βItβs also potent.β
βVery,β Gregory agreed, sipping the tea. βOh, that helps temper the flare-up.β
Both Jenn and Yukiko sipped at their tea, sighing as their aether settled down. βWeβll have to eat this slowly,β Jenn said.
βLeroy,β Yukiko called out to him, βwhat is this dish called?β
βCrookneck frittata,β Leroy replied.
βItβs delicious,β Jenn added. βPlease let Gordon know for us.β
βI will,β Leroy smiled.

Stepping outside once theyβd finished their breakfast, the friends looked down the street, which had only occasional pockets of light. βWe know which way the park is, so we can still get there, but Iβm surprised at how unlit the town is,β Gregory said.
βIβm not. Weβve just gotten used to the academy,β Yukiko said.
βMost towns donβt use much lighting during dark hours,β Jenn said. βThe cost alone, as Magus Han showed us, is prohibitive for the majority of towns, and even most cities.β
βFair,β Gregory said. βStretch, then jog to the park?β
βYes,β Yukiko said, moving away from the door and window.
The town was nearly deserted as they jogged. They did hear the occasional muted voice, and once or twice caught sight of people staggering away down alleyways. The friends stayed together, and no one bothered them.
There were lights at the corners of the park, making it easy to find, but the light didnβt extend far from the lanterns. They stayed near the closest post, just inside the dim light it cast, though apart enough to do their exercises.
βNo guards?β Gregory asked as they
