She shivered.
The look in his eyes when their gazes had locked before she had slipped away earlier. . .
No man had ever looked at her that way. But she could not forget that, before today, he had not shown interest in her. It was thus impossible to tell whether his sudden madness would be as fleeting?
Lord, she had to stop. She could not entertain this sudden fancy for Wicke. It was too dangerous. Because if she did entertain this sudden impulse of desire, where would it leave them when the madness passed? Where would that leave Knightleyโs?
Rebecca could take no more of the questions boring holes in her head. Before she thought better of it, she launched from her chamber and did not stop until she stood before his. Darkness had already fallen, and Rebecca was not certain if Wicke had left for Willoughby Castle or not. She inhaled deeply and knocked on the door.
Rebecca held her breath for a heartbeat, then, โYes?โ
โItโs Rebecca.โ
Another, longer pause. โCome in.โ
Rebecca mentally steeled herself as she entered and shut the door, tracking the room for Wicke. She felt the warmth of his gaze even before their gazes locked.
โI have thought of this at great length,โ Rebecca started. โAnd we need to . . .โ The words died on her lips.
Wicke leaned against the mantel of the fireplace in nothing but his breeches. No boots. No socks. No shirt. His mop of hair, sleek and wet, dropped pearls of water onto his shoulder that rolled down his chiseled chest. Lord above, she ought to have asked him to join her in the drawing room.
Her eyes flicked to the tub of water and back to him. โYou could not have put on a shirt before I entered?โ
โThat is what you take away from joining me in my bedchamber alone? Again.โ
Her face flamed. โOf course not. I came to discuss your proposal, among other things.โ
โThen I suggest you ignore my state of undress.โ
Well, I never!
And was that a twinkle in his eyes?
Rebecca gritted her teeth and girded her resolve, determined to keep her eyes locked on his and not wander about the rippled contours of his chest. โWhat are you doing here in any event? Were you not to follow Langley as soon as you were able?โ
โAnd you believe I am able?โ
Rebecca supposed not. They had left things rather a mess between them. Something she planned to remedy now. โVery well, let us discuss this burden you have shouldered upon me.โ
โBurden?โ He pushed back from the mantel and advanced on her. โYou believe marriage to me would be a burden? What about my mouth on yours. Is that a burden as well?
She lifted her chin a notch. โI believe your mind has been addled.โ
โAs I have told you, Iโve never been saner in my life.โ
โAnd I have always looked to you as a brother.โ It was the only defense Rebecca could offer.
โEven now?โ He cocked his head to the side. โWhat will it take for you to look at me in another way?โ
โThere is no other way.โ
โThere are many ways, Rebecca, but let us start with man. Just a man.โ
โI am aware you are a man. I can very well see that.โ Her eyes dropped. Lawd, they dropped, and they did not want to lift again. Rebecca had to wrestle her lashes back up to meet Wickeโs gaze again, inwardly cursing at the triumphant glint there.
She squared her shoulders. โPerhaps I doubt your sincerity.โ
He raised a single brow.
โHow can you feel the way you claim, for years, I might add, and not give any indication?โ
โI am a fool.โ
โFool or not, why wait for my infatuation to pass? That doesnโt seem all that...โ Rebecca searched for the right word, and decided upon, โmanly.โ
โNot manly? What exactly then, constitutes your definition of manly?โ He closed the distance separating them, eyes suddenly sharp as a hawk. โAnd here I believed I had acted the gentleman all these years while you wanted a man.โ
โThat is not what I said,โ Rebecca stammered, hastily retreating from his stalk. Her back hit the wall.
He stopped a hairsbreadth away from her. She could feel his presence invading hers, overwhelming, beckoning, to what, she could not voice.
โWould you have accepted me if I had courted you in your first season? You seemed to have eyes only for Langley.โ
Well, yes, because she had daydreamed about her first kiss, not because she was in love with him. She could see how Wicke might have misinterpreted her. But would she have accepted him? She did not know. And she voiced as much: โThe answer to that, Wicke, will remain a mystery since you never did.โ
โIโm courting you now.โ
โI cannot marry you.โ There, sheโd said it again. Clear. To the point.
The beast smiled at her. Wolf-like.
โWhat do you find so amusing?โ she demanded.
โIt occurs to me that what you say and what you mean are two different entities.โ
โThey are not!โ
His hand came up to cup her cheek. โAnd yet you cannot seem to keep away from me.โ
โThat is not . . . I . . .โ
โLet me respond to your refusal like a man,โ he responded before he claimed her lips in a kiss.
Rebecca ordered her knees to stay strong. A futile demand. She grabbed onto Wickeโs shoulders, his skin warm beneath her touch, with the intent to shove away from him. Instead, she found her entire body pressed up against the hard expanse of his bare chest.
His tongue skimmed her lower lip. Lord above. His mouth was enthralling. Distracting. Entirely merciless as he sought to claim every inch of her lips. She hadnโt meant for this to happen again, had intended the complete opposite, but now that Rebecca once again found herself in Wickeโs arms, she kissed him back. She could never get back her first kiss. She could, however, still experience a true, first kiss.
Nothing could have
