the townhouse and saw a black coach parked further up the street.

She cautiously approached it and was pleased when the door opened and Oliver stepped out. He was dressed in a dark jacket and trousers, which contrasted with his white linens.

A footman stepped off his perch and relieved her of the valise, then strapped it onto the back of the coach.

Oliver approached her. โ€œAre you sure that you want to go through with this?โ€ he asked.

โ€œI am,โ€ she replied.

His face, which had been solemn, suddenly broke into a smile. โ€œIโ€™m glad to hear it.โ€ He offered his arm. โ€œI hope it wonโ€™t be an issue that we will be traveling at night.โ€

As Oliver assisted her into the coach, she replied, โ€œThat is why I brought my muff pistol with me.โ€

โ€œDo you know how to shoot a pistol?โ€ Oliver asked as he sat across from her.

โ€œI do,โ€ she shared as she felt the coach jerk forward. โ€œAfter my parents died, I decided that I would learn how to protect myself, just in case the situation ever arose.โ€

โ€œYou do not need to fear for your safety,โ€ he assured her, โ€œyou are under my protection now.โ€

โ€œI appreciate that, but I can take care of myself.โ€

Oliver shook his head, but a hint of a smile was on his lips. โ€œYou always were the headstrong one.โ€

โ€œThere is nothing wrong with knowing what you want.โ€

โ€œIt is when you are too stubborn and refuse help.โ€

โ€œPerhaps.โ€

Oliver gave her a peculiar look. โ€œDid you just agree with me?โ€

โ€œI did.โ€

โ€œIf you do that more often, then this marriage could work out splendidly,โ€ Oliver joked.

Emmeline laughed. โ€œThank you for doing this for me.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to keep thanking me.โ€

โ€œBut I feel as if I should,โ€ she responded.

With a glance out the darkened window, Oliver said, โ€œI believe this partnership will be mutually beneficial for the both of us.โ€

โ€œYou do?โ€

โ€œYes. The scheming matchmaking mothers will finally leave me alone, and you wonโ€™t have to marry the duke.โ€

Emmeline started fidgeting with the fringe on her reticule. โ€œHow does a marriage of convenience work, exactly?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not entirely sure,โ€ Oliver teased. โ€œI have never been in one before.โ€

โ€œDo we attend social events together?โ€

Oliver nodded. โ€œI suppose we give the appearance that we are a happily married couple, but we go our separate ways when we are at home.โ€

โ€œWill we reside at Hawthorne House?โ€

โ€œYes, for now,โ€ he replied. โ€œI informed my brother of my decision to elope with you, and he is making the preparations for our return.โ€

Emmeline pressed her lips together. โ€œLord Hawthorne must think me quite silly to elope with you and forego an advantageous marriage with the Duke of Billingham.โ€

โ€œI explained your reasons to him, and he was surprisingly supportive of our decision to elope,โ€ Oliver said.

โ€œThat is a relief.โ€

โ€œYou need not worry,โ€ he encouraged. โ€œMy mother will rejoice when she finds that we are to be wed. She has always thought fondly of you.โ€

Emmeline gave him a timid smile. โ€œI suppose I am just nervous.โ€

โ€œThere is no reason to be nervous. After all, you are marrying the most handsome and clever bachelor amongst the ton.โ€ Oliver gave her a smug smile.

Her smile turned genuine. โ€œI see your ego has only grown over time.โ€

โ€œFrankly, it has stayed pretty consistent.โ€

Emmeline turned her attention towards the window and watched as the moon lit up the night sky. โ€œHow long does it take to travel to Gretna Green?โ€

โ€œIf we only stop to swap out the horses, we should arrive in two daysโ€™ time,โ€ he explained.

โ€œSplendid, but is it safe to travel at night?โ€

โ€œIt is a risk that I am willing to take,โ€ he said. โ€œIf not, it could take up to four days to arrive.โ€

A silence descended over them as Emmeline watched the buildings begin to fade away and be replaced by the rolling hills of the countryside.

โ€œIt is lovely out here,โ€ Oliver commented.

โ€œThat it is,โ€ Emmeline agreed. โ€œI find that I enjoy the countryside much more than being in Town.โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t surprise me,โ€ Oliver said. โ€œYou would always spend every hour you could outside when you were residing at your country home.โ€

Bringing her gaze back to meet his, Emmeline replied, โ€œIt is true. I loved nothing more than exploring the woodlands behind our estate.โ€

โ€œAnd our woodlands,โ€ Oliver teased.

Emmeline smiled. โ€œJane and I did have quite the adventures,โ€ she admitted. โ€œI must admit that my parents were rather indulgent with me.โ€

โ€œYes, they were.โ€

Her smile dimmed. โ€œI miss them dreadfully.โ€

Oliver gave her a look filled with compassion. โ€œI can imagine.โ€

โ€œDo you suppose they would be disappointed in my decision to elope with you?โ€ she asked as she nibbled on her bottom lip.

โ€œYour parents adored you, and I would imagine they would just want you to be happy.โ€

โ€œThank you for that.โ€

Oliver shrugged. โ€œBesides, I have no doubt that they would have been elated that you picked me.โ€

A laugh escaped her lips. โ€œYou have not changed since we were little.โ€

At her words, a pained look came into his eyes. โ€œThat is not entirely true.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œI am not the carefree boy that I once was,โ€ he replied.

She eyed him curiously as she asked, โ€œDo you not spend your days gambling, drinking, and flirting with women?โ€

โ€œI do, but there is so much more to me than that.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Emmeline replied.

โ€œYou do?โ€

Emmeline bobbed her head. โ€œYou may have your vices, but I believe you to be a good, honorable man.โ€

For a moment, he stared at her in disbelief. โ€œAnd why is that?โ€

โ€œBecause you are saving me from a terrible marriage.โ€

Oliver pursed his lips and grew silent. Finally, he spoke up. โ€œI am not the man that you think I am,โ€ he expressed.

โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œI have done some terrible things.โ€

โ€œThat is in the past now,โ€ she remarked encouragingly.

Oliver threaded his fingers and placed them in his lap. โ€œIt is not that simple,โ€ he said. โ€œAt times, my actions will not make sense to you, but I need you to know that I will be faithful to you.โ€

โ€œI understand.โ€

โ€œYou should also know that I am a man with many secrets,โ€ Oliver shared, his expression solemn, โ€œand I
