She cautiously approached it and was pleased when the door opened and Oliver stepped out. He was dressed in a dark jacket and trousers, which contrasted with his white linens.
A footman stepped off his perch and relieved her of the valise, then strapped it onto the back of the coach.
Oliver approached her. โAre you sure that you want to go through with this?โ he asked.
โI am,โ she replied.
His face, which had been solemn, suddenly broke into a smile. โIโm glad to hear it.โ He offered his arm. โI hope it wonโt be an issue that we will be traveling at night.โ
As Oliver assisted her into the coach, she replied, โThat is why I brought my muff pistol with me.โ
โDo you know how to shoot a pistol?โ Oliver asked as he sat across from her.
โI do,โ she shared as she felt the coach jerk forward. โAfter my parents died, I decided that I would learn how to protect myself, just in case the situation ever arose.โ
โYou do not need to fear for your safety,โ he assured her, โyou are under my protection now.โ
โI appreciate that, but I can take care of myself.โ
Oliver shook his head, but a hint of a smile was on his lips. โYou always were the headstrong one.โ
โThere is nothing wrong with knowing what you want.โ
โIt is when you are too stubborn and refuse help.โ
โPerhaps.โ
Oliver gave her a peculiar look. โDid you just agree with me?โ
โI did.โ
โIf you do that more often, then this marriage could work out splendidly,โ Oliver joked.
Emmeline laughed. โThank you for doing this for me.โ
โYou donโt have to keep thanking me.โ
โBut I feel as if I should,โ she responded.
With a glance out the darkened window, Oliver said, โI believe this partnership will be mutually beneficial for the both of us.โ
โYou do?โ
โYes. The scheming matchmaking mothers will finally leave me alone, and you wonโt have to marry the duke.โ
Emmeline started fidgeting with the fringe on her reticule. โHow does a marriage of convenience work, exactly?โ
โIโm not entirely sure,โ Oliver teased. โI have never been in one before.โ
โDo we attend social events together?โ
Oliver nodded. โI suppose we give the appearance that we are a happily married couple, but we go our separate ways when we are at home.โ
โWill we reside at Hawthorne House?โ
โYes, for now,โ he replied. โI informed my brother of my decision to elope with you, and he is making the preparations for our return.โ
Emmeline pressed her lips together. โLord Hawthorne must think me quite silly to elope with you and forego an advantageous marriage with the Duke of Billingham.โ
โI explained your reasons to him, and he was surprisingly supportive of our decision to elope,โ Oliver said.
โThat is a relief.โ
โYou need not worry,โ he encouraged. โMy mother will rejoice when she finds that we are to be wed. She has always thought fondly of you.โ
Emmeline gave him a timid smile. โI suppose I am just nervous.โ
โThere is no reason to be nervous. After all, you are marrying the most handsome and clever bachelor amongst the ton.โ Oliver gave her a smug smile.
Her smile turned genuine. โI see your ego has only grown over time.โ
โFrankly, it has stayed pretty consistent.โ
Emmeline turned her attention towards the window and watched as the moon lit up the night sky. โHow long does it take to travel to Gretna Green?โ
โIf we only stop to swap out the horses, we should arrive in two daysโ time,โ he explained.
โSplendid, but is it safe to travel at night?โ
โIt is a risk that I am willing to take,โ he said. โIf not, it could take up to four days to arrive.โ
A silence descended over them as Emmeline watched the buildings begin to fade away and be replaced by the rolling hills of the countryside.
โIt is lovely out here,โ Oliver commented.
โThat it is,โ Emmeline agreed. โI find that I enjoy the countryside much more than being in Town.โ
โThat doesnโt surprise me,โ Oliver said. โYou would always spend every hour you could outside when you were residing at your country home.โ
Bringing her gaze back to meet his, Emmeline replied, โIt is true. I loved nothing more than exploring the woodlands behind our estate.โ
โAnd our woodlands,โ Oliver teased.
Emmeline smiled. โJane and I did have quite the adventures,โ she admitted. โI must admit that my parents were rather indulgent with me.โ
โYes, they were.โ
Her smile dimmed. โI miss them dreadfully.โ
Oliver gave her a look filled with compassion. โI can imagine.โ
โDo you suppose they would be disappointed in my decision to elope with you?โ she asked as she nibbled on her bottom lip.
โYour parents adored you, and I would imagine they would just want you to be happy.โ
โThank you for that.โ
Oliver shrugged. โBesides, I have no doubt that they would have been elated that you picked me.โ
A laugh escaped her lips. โYou have not changed since we were little.โ
At her words, a pained look came into his eyes. โThat is not entirely true.โ
โNo?โ
โI am not the carefree boy that I once was,โ he replied.
She eyed him curiously as she asked, โDo you not spend your days gambling, drinking, and flirting with women?โ
โI do, but there is so much more to me than that.โ
โI know,โ Emmeline replied.
โYou do?โ
Emmeline bobbed her head. โYou may have your vices, but I believe you to be a good, honorable man.โ
For a moment, he stared at her in disbelief. โAnd why is that?โ
โBecause you are saving me from a terrible marriage.โ
Oliver pursed his lips and grew silent. Finally, he spoke up. โI am not the man that you think I am,โ he expressed.
โNo?โ
โI have done some terrible things.โ
โThat is in the past now,โ she remarked encouragingly.
Oliver threaded his fingers and placed them in his lap. โIt is not that simple,โ he said. โAt times, my actions will not make sense to you, but I need you to know that I will be faithful to you.โ
โI understand.โ
โYou should also know that I am a man with many secrets,โ Oliver shared, his expression solemn, โand I
