βDammit,β I say, quickly studying the spell and committing it to memory.
The summoning spell requires something physical thatβs directly tied to my dad. Like a picture, or some other likeness. The rest is all up to the biomancerβs intentions and summoning. Which, of course, would be Colton.
I should have listened to Abigail from the start.
Now I need to make it back to my body quickly so I can call it all off. As much as Wade and I wanted to avoid pulling the twins in, it looks like weβre going to need them both to make this happen. And if weβre going to make it work, weβre going to need to act fast.
βThank you,β I whisper, sort of to the grimoire and sort of to the catacombs in general as I close the book.
As I step away from the pedestal, the flames begin to go out, one at a time. I walk to the tunnel entrance, which brings me back to the resurrection chamber, and close my eyes. Immediately, I sense the rest of the space go dark.
I wait a moment, allowing my extrasensory vision to catch up. When the bright colors spring to life, I donβt waste any time. I race forward, willing myself to get to the other endβand to my body faster.
Somehow, before I even reach the end of the tunnel, Iβm thrust back into my body and I lurch forward with a jerk. I gasp for air, as if itβs the first time Iβve ever done so.
As I regain my awareness, though, the world is spinning in and out of view. Sand spirals around the resurrection chamber in a vortex and the entire space hums with an energy that makes my skin crawl and stomach lurch.
Oh god, Iβm too late.
Chapter 23
Into the Vortex
At first, I canβt make anything outβitβs all a blur of sand as it cyclones around the room. The velocity of it makes it damn near impossible to get out, as the granules thrash across my arms and face. Any light from the torches on the walls has been extinguished and all that remains is the dying light from the window beyond the stairs.
βWhat in the hell?β I shriek, shielding my eyes.
Wade is suddenly at my side. βThank god. We gotta find a way to get out of here.β
βWhat happened?β I say, trying to get to my feet.
Wade groans. βDominic. What else? He wouldnβt listen to me. I told him you wanted us to wait to do anything until you were back to yourself. But of course, that guy thinks he always knows better than everyone else.β
βGreat,β I mutter, looking around the space but unable to make anything out farther than a foot or so in front of me.
βYeah, I donβt know what was going on in his head,β Wade says, shielding his eyes with his forearm as he peers into the vortex of sand and stone. βHe tried to summon your dadβs location and itβI donβt even know what the hell happened, to be honest.β
βHe gave my dad a power boost,β I say, running my hand along my forehead. βIs he still here? Dominic, I mean?β
Wade ducks a stone the size of his fist, pulling me down with him so weβre both in a crouch. It whizzes by, careening around with the rest of the cyclone. βI think so? When stuff started to rumble and the dirt started this whole thing, he took off for the stairs, though. Coward.β
βIt was the right instinct,β I say, yanking the collar of my t-shirt up to cover my nose and mouth.
He does the same and shrugs. βI guess.β
βYou should have done the same,β I say, biting my lip.
βLike hell. Iβm not about to leave you here, unprotected,β Wade says, looking incensed.
My thoughts tumble around, spinning at the same speed as the cyclone of sand. Iβm not sure how to make it out of here and if my dadβs taken control of the house, nowhere is going to be safe. Especially if heβs managed to trap Abigail again.
My heart thumps loudly in my chest as I realize just how dire this situation really is. Especially for Wade. He shouldnβt be here, and if his father realizes weβre still togetherβ¦or worse, if he gets himself killedβ¦
I cover my mouth in horror.
βOh my god. Wade, we need to get you out of here,β I sputter.
Wadeβs silver gaze widens as he makes a face. βWe both need to get the hell outta here.β
βNo, I mean, if you were to get hurtβ¦β I say, reaching out for him. βOr worseβ¦β
βHey, hey, look at me,β Wade says, grabbing hold of my arms and making me turn to face him. βWe are in all of this together. Thereβs absolutely no other place Iβd rather be right now. Iβm not gonna dieβand neither are you. Do you hear me?β
I nod, unable to stop the sheer panic consuming every fiber of my being. If something happens to Wade, I would never be able to forgive myself.
βWeβre gonna get out of this mess, I promise you,β he says, gazing round the room. βThereβs nowhere thatβs protected other than beneath the stairs, from what I can tell. But good luck getting up them right now.β
Suddenly, the room begins to rumble, as if the stones holding up the walls are getting ready to catapult themselves at us.
βShitβs getting way worse. We need an exit strategy. How do we stop your dad?β Wade says, eyeing the walls. βWhat did the grimoire say?β
I shake my head. βFor startersβnot to mess with a location spell if youβre not a biomancer. Otherwise, this would happen,β I say, ducking a stone as it hits the wall behind me. Smaller chunks of sand and debris pepper the top of my head as it explodes on impact.
Wadeβs silver eyes are wide as he brushes off my hair and says, βFigures. Dammit. Iβm sorry, Dru. I tried to stop Dominic, but you know what a stubborn
