βHeβs not my lord.β The youth draws himself up to his fullest height. βIβm my own man.β
Granger chuckles to himself. βI think I like this kid.β
βHe certainly is sure of himself,β Sinclair allows.
βYouβre welcome to join us, but the choice is yours, of course,β Margo says.
He thinks for a moment. βYou got any food?β
βIf you like protein packs, weβve got plenty where weβre headed,β Milton says.
βHallelujah!β Granger canβt contain his excitement. His stomach growls as if on cue.
Lemuelβs bony shoulders shift upward and drop. βI could probably eat a goblyn, Iβm so hungry.β He packed every weapon he could carry, but he didnβt bring anything to eat? He must have left in a real hurry.
Margo resumes her position at the wheel as Lemuel tentatively climbs in beside her. Milton lingers at her door.
βIf youβve got everything under control here, Iβll go ahead and let them know youβre on your way.β He looks eastward. βAnother hour or so until dawn. Youβll make it by first light.β
Margo nods, revving the engine as Milton steps back and waves. Then with the greatest of ease, he takes to the sky. I wonβt be getting over that trick anytime soon. Lemuel cranes his neck to watch as Milton disappears into the night.
βGaia has indeed blessed him,β he murmurs, awestruck.
βTell me about Gaia,β Margo says. βIs she a member of your bunker?β
Lemuel frowns. βYou donβt know Gaia? How can that be?β
Harris looks ready to interrupt with something irate or belligerent, but I seize his weapon and pin him against the rear hatch, staring him down. The vehicle crosses a rough patch of terrain, rocking and lurching. No one seems to notice our commotion.
βWe need to learn all that we can here, Doc,β I tell him. βWeβre still on mission, make no mistake. But weβre not running the show right now. Weβll leave that to the folks busy saving our asses. So why donβt you do your profession a service and start taking notes. Seems to me youβve sure as hell forgotten what you were preaching earlier.β
βThat was before I knew they wanted to kill us!β Harrisβs eyes bulge.
βObserve now, report later. As soon as the opportunity arises, Iβll let Mutegi know whatβs going on. Until then, we sit tight. Got it?β
Harris nods reluctantly. βGlad to see you back on track, Sergeant. I had my doubts.β
I would have rather knocked him out cold. But the way things stand, I can only hope Harris will take it down a notch and pay close attention to whatβs going on.
βYouβre the United World scouts from the Argonaus.β Lemuel turns in his seat to face Sinclair and Granger. βCain said you would be coming.β
βTell us about himβyour leader?β Margo focuses his attention on what we need to know. Sheβs good about it, keeping that friendly, curious tone intact, the kind that inflates a young manβs pride and makes him eager to share.
Her telepathic abilities might also be in play.
βCain thinks heβs Gaiaβs chosen one, just because heβs the only person she speaks to,β Lemuel says. βHeβs the biggest and the strongest, and he throws his weight around all the time.β
βHeβs a bully,β Margo observes.
βAnd heβs got more wives than anybodyβfour. Can you believe that?β
βNo, Iββ She appears flustered for the first time during their interchange.
βHeβs got them all with child, even Victoriaβhis fourth wife. She isnβt much older than me. Hell, we grew up together in the bunker!β
βTheyβre able to reproduce,β Harris whispers on comms, gripping my arm.
βYou guys get in trouble or something?β Lemuel looks at me.
βThey were in a hurry,β Sinclair explains. βThey didnβt have time to find a seat.β
Lemuel nods, assessing my threat level.
βThatβs our team leader and our doctor.β Granger points at each of us in turn. βIβm the engineer on this expedition, and sheβs our science officer. We had one more, but we lostββ
βDo you have a designation, Lemuel?β Sinclair interjects. Best not to mention our weapons officerβs demise.
βA rank or something, you mean?β He frowns. βNo. Weβre not military.β
βYet theyβre armed to the teeth,β Harris says on internal comms. βAnd notice he said weβhe still identifies with the group that exiled him. That could pose a problem later on, should we cross paths with that hunting party.β
βIβm a warrior. Staked thirty-four goblyns all by myself.β Lemuelβs chin rises with pride as he speaks. βI wouldβve gotten my own wife next year, but Cain would have taken her for himself first. He does that, you know. Heβs the only one with any seed to sow.β
βThe alpha male,β Harris comments.
βYou and Victoria are close,β Margo continues. βWill she leave Cain to join you?β
The youth shakes his head, eyes downcast. βCain wonβt let her live, once sheβs had his baby.β He faces Margo with sudden hope in his voice. βBut he does need her, you know. Sheβs his eyes and ears out here. She can send her mind long-distance. Thatβs how she contacted you, right?β He watches Margo nod. βSo youβre like her, then. You have the gift of far-thought?β
Margo glances at me in the rearview before she replies, βI was able to hear her thoughts as if they were my own. She guided us to you.β
Lemuel nods, his eyes distant. βYeah, thatβs what she said.β He gestures at the vehicle, changing the topic. βSomehow I donβt think youβre part of Lutherβs nomads. They donβt have a single set of wheels to their name.β
First Cain, now Lutherβtribal leaders of some kind? And who is this Gaia the kid mentioned? Some sort of queen over them all?
βWhere do you think Iβm from?β Margo almost smiles.
He shrugs. βEden, probably.β He stares hard at the terrain ahead.
βGood guess. What do you know about Eden?β
βNot much. Only that you still live under the ground. You didnβt come up to the surface with the rest of us after All-Clear.β He pauses. βCain says you rejected Gaiaβs blessing and have been cursed because of it, that you can never leave your bunker. But that canβt be
