βGood,β he says, walking out into the middle of the driveway. βThat will make this a little easier.β
βDonβt forget to lay the foundation of protection, like weβve talked about,β Diana says, eyeing Colton.
He nods, turning to his sister. βCat, can you grab me the salt? That should be all we need.β
βOn it,β she says, bounding up the steps and heading into the recesses of the house.
I bite my lower lip and reach for Wadeβs hand. βThank you, guys. All of you. Iβ¦β my gaze falls to the grass at my feet and I shake my head. βI wouldnβt have been able to do this without all of you.β
Wade leans into me, nudging me with his shoulder. βThat makes two of us.β
βThatβs what friends are for,β Dominic says, standing up and shooting him a smirk.
Colton nods, smiling in our direction.
Thereβs a strange duality of emotions fighting for dominance inside me. On one hand, thereβs a profound sense of sadness and heartache clutching at my chest. On the other hand, Iβm also filled with gratitude. After last semester, I would never have thought Iβd be standing here, feeling as close to each of these people as I do right now.
Cat bursts out of the door, and in her hands is a large jar of sea salt. βWill this be enough, Colt?β
He nods and walks over to a clear patch of dirt on the driveway. Kneeling down, he sets the photo a couple of inches in front of him. Cat follows him, opening the jar of salt. She walks around him in a clockwise motion, pouring the salt in a circle of protection.
Each of us follows them, standing just outside the circle and watching them set to work. When the contents of the jar are gone and the circle is complete, a small shockwave of white light shoots upward toward the sky like a cylinder of protection.
βRemember, focus on Lyleβs physical being. Not who he was as a person,β Diana says. βThat should help you differentiate the two. You donβt want to provoke his Lemure any more than necessary.β
Coltonβs eyes widen, and he takes a deep breath. βYou can say that again.β
Nodding to herself, Diana takes a step back, with Blake by her side. Her perceptive gaze takes in everything as she sweeps it over the entire scene. Itβs almost as if sheβs playing a large game of chess and weβre all the game pieces.
In some ways, thereβs a sense of security in it. I know that with her psychic powers and Coltonβs biomancy, together weβll find my dad.
A hushed reverence descends through the group of us as Colton lowers his head in concentration. With his hands outstretched to the photo, he begins speaking in a low chant.
Collectively, we hold our breath as he does his thing. At first, it doesnβt look like anything is happening, but then white, whispy energy erupts from the palms of his hands. It wraps around the picture frame, sweeping across it the way incense smoke rolls around the objects near it.
βWhat are you getting?β Cat asks, narrowing her gaze.
Colton shakes his head. βIβm notβitβs like itβs not connecting to it. The energy is too scattered. There are too many people in this photo.β
A sickening feeling settles in the pit of my stomach. I totally jinxed it with my thoughts.
βWell, what about sending Autumn in?β Dominic says.
With the exception of Diana, everyone turns to face him with the same question written across their faces. Why?
Dominic looks at us as if itβs completely obvious. βDid any of you pay attention to what Autumn said?β
Clearly amused, a slow smirk slides across Dianaβs features.
When no one replies, Dominic huffs, raising a hand out in front of him. βShe said we need something tied to him, or that shares his likeness. Well, I donβt know about you, but you donβt get much more tied to someone than being their kid.β
One by one, they turn to face me.
βPlus, she does kinda share his likeness,β Cat says, raising her eyebrows in approval.
βSheβs practically the spitting image,β Mrs. Gilbert chuckles.
I turn to face Diana, hoping to get her consensus. βWill this work?β I ask.
Something hides in the depths of her eyes, but she tips her head. βIt would stand to reason.β
βBut you canβt tell?β I say, making a face.
βWhen the works of gods are involved, even the best psychics in the world will have their limitations. The Moirai, while not gods specifically, have powers many gods have fought over. I find itβs best to tread lightly and hope that fate favors the attempts,β she says, accentuating the final words.
Casting a quick glance at Wade, I drop his hand and walk over to the circle.
Colton brings his hands into prayer position in front of his chest, then tips them forward at the wrist so his fingertips face me. As he pulls his hands apart, the energy of the cylinder of light separates like curtains being drawn back.
Stepping gingerly over the salt, I walk to him. Shifting the photo to the side, I kneel down in front of Colton, taking the photoβs place.
βThis wonβt hurt her, will it?β Wade asks. I look up to his worried expression.
Diana shakes her head. βIt shouldnβt. Heβs just using her connection to her dad like a scrying tool. Their DNA is linked.β
Wade nods, scrunching his lips tight.
Turning back to Colton, I take a deep breath. βWhat do you need me to do?β
He extends his hands, palms upward. I stare at them for a moment, then slowly reach out, placing my hands in his. As soon as our skin comes into contact, the blue and orange flames erupt. They begin at the place of contact, and spread up my arms.
βHoly shit,β Dominic mutters.
Ignoring their mutterings, I close my eyes, not wanting to see the look on Wadeβs face. Coltonβs hands tighten around mine and he begins to chant again.
While thereβs no pain from the fire, thereβs a deep sense of movement inside
