โWhat about the woman and the other menโtheir leader, Bishop?โ
โThe sergeant is the only one among them open to my presence.โ
โYou revealed yourself to him?โ I feel a bitter surge of jealousy. I donโt like it, but I canโt help it. Gritting my teeth, I dig at the damp, hard-packed sand around the rebar with my hands. โHowโd he take it?โ
โHe could not see. Something was wrong with his helmet. But he heard me, though he could not believe what he was hearing.โ She sounds amused.
โWhat did you do? Show up as his girlfriend or something?โ
โHis daughter. And then his wife.โ
I can feel her eyes on me as I busy myself with the sand.
โThe man is motivated by love. He wishes only to see his family again.โ She pauses. โThe team was attacked by daemons. I had to intervene.โ
โYou must really think theyโre important, these UW people.โ
โThe United World government does not own James Bishop. They are using him. If he were to become an allyโโ
โWhy are you so interested?โ I stop digging and look up at her. My heartโs beating as fast as it does during flight. โWhy the hell do you care about any of thisโabout us? What are we to you?โ
She blinks at me as her brow creases. โMiltonโโ
I stand, abandoning the corpse. โShow me.โ I advance on her. โShow me what you looked like to him.โ
โMilton, it doesnโt work like that. You knowโโ
โI said show me.โ I grip her by the forearms. She doesnโt struggle.
โWhy are youโ?โ
โDo it now!โ
โOr what?โ Jacksonโs voice behind me sends an oily chill up the back of my neck. โYouโll kill her all over again?โ
I release Julia and whirl with fists clenched to face this specter from my past. But I have no words as I stare up at the large bearded man. So I return to the sand instead.
โWhat are you doing with that thing?โ Jackson smirks at the corpse.
โCleaning up after you,โ Julia says.
โHey, I didnโt do this. I gave Miltonโs people my word. No more interfering.โ
I remain silent, digging both hands with renewed vigor. Part of me almost believes if I ignore Jackson, heโll go away. But most of me knows better.
โWhereโs your dress?โ I mutter without looking up.
Jackson chuckles drily. โYouโve been telling tales out of school, my dear.โ
โOnly the truth,โ Julia replies.
โAs you see it.โ
โYou have set yourself up as an object of their worshipโโ
โIโve given them hope,โ he counters.
โLike this?โ I gesture at the dead body. โYou know what it will bring.โ
Jackson smiles coldly. โYour kind knows only destruction. If you remember, I gave you the choice to end their misery, once and for all. But you chose life.โ He laughs, and there is no mirth in his toneโonly malice. โLetโs see what your species does with it!โ
โYou want them to destroy themselves,โ Julia says.
โI want them to do what comes naturally. They had their time on this earth, and they squandered it. They destroyed us all, everything we ever knew. They should have exterminated themselves in the process.โ He folds his brawny arms and shrugs. โIโm just allowing them to fulfill their destiny.โ
โThrough deceit.โ Sheโs never backed down from him, and she isnโt now. โYou manipulate them and lie to them, pretending to have powers youโve never possessed. If you manifested yourself in a form more in keeping with your goalsโโ
โYouโd have me show up as what? A devil?โ
โIf the hoof fits.โ
Iโve got the iron bars free of the hard-packed sand, and I give the skewered body a slight push, sending it over backward where it falls with a puff of dust. I tug out each of the bloodstained rods, pulling them free of the corpse and sending them skidding across the sand.
โSo nothingโs really changed.โ I donโt look at either one of them. โAfter all we went through before, everything you put me through. Weโre right back where we started. You want us to live.โ I nod toward Julia as I dig with my hands, enlarging the pit to make room for the soldierโs body. โAnd you want us to dieโonly youโre not acting against us directly this time around.โ I glance up at Jackson with contempt. โYouโre pitting us against each other instead. So that in the end, none of us will survive.โ I shake my head at the insanity of it.
Julia kneels beside me. โYou have changed immensely, Milton. Just think back to the person you were a year ago, and compare that to the man you are now. You have earned Lutherโs complete trust. He sends you to scout for your people, and he makes decisions that affect all of their lives based on your word alone. Just last night, you saved every member of that United World teamโโ
โA reprieve.โ Jackson scoffs. โTheir days are numbered.โ
โIf you have your way,โ Julia allows. โBut Milton has stopped you before. He will do it again.โ
The weight of her expectations sits squarely on my shoulders.
โMaybe he doesnโt want to be your messiah. Have you ever considered that? Itโs just as likely heโll crumble under the pressure, and everything will go exactly as Iโve planned.โ Jackson nods with complete confidence. โThe humans used to play a game of strategy called chess. What youโre doing is planning your tactics around a single piece, pinning all your hopes for humankind on Milton, a fractured soul. But Iโve already looked ahead, three or four moves down the line, and thereโs no chance youโre going to beat me. Because Iโve learned my lesson, and I donโt have my entire strategy based on a single man or woman. This time, Iโm coming from all angles: Cainโs people, Eden, the dissention in Lutherโs own camp.โ He shakes his head. โYou wonโt be able to stop me.โ
For once, he doesnโt sound arrogant. Heโs merely stating the facts.
