I shake my head. βNo, not as bad.β
βGood. I was beginning to worry,β he says squinting at me as he rubs his temple.
βWhat about you?β I ask, narrowing my gaze between glances at the road.
His eyes widen. βWhat about me?β
βAre you okay?β
βWhy wouldnβt I be?β he asks, dropping his hand to his lap.
I scrunch my face and quirk an eyebrow. βDo you have a headache?β
βA little. I should have brought my sunglasses. Itβs bright out here,β Wade says, leaning back in his seat and reaching for my hand. βI forget sometimes just how bright the snow can be when itβs sunny.β
βWe could stop and get you a pair in the next town. I donβt think weβre far from Winchester,β I say, squeezing his hand.
βNah, itβll be okay,β he says, his eyes drifting shut. βWeβre nearly there. Iβll just close my eyes for a bit. Thatβll help.β
βOkay, but if you change your mind, let me know.β
βOf course,β he says, grinning with his eyes still closed.
My lips press tight and I return my gaze out across the landscape. Iβd hoped to have more company to help me keep my mind off of everything. Conversation helps keep the anxiety at bay, but then again, I havenβt been a terribly good conversationalist so far anyway.
The remainder of the drive passes in relative silence. Wade drifts off into an easy sleep, while Iβm left alone with my thoughts. As expected, anxiety rips through my ribcage and more than once, I have to remind myself to breathe so I wonβt be sick.
By the time we pull into Momβs driveway, the sky has turned a brilliant shade of pink as the sun is close to setting. The house is dark inside, and I suddenly regret not calling to warn Mom about our arrival today.
βWade, weβre here,β I say, nudging him gently.
He rouses, sitting up straighter in his seat as he looks around sleepily. βSorry about that. Did I doze off?β
I nod, laughing softly. βLike, for most of the trip.β
He makes a face, wiping at his eyes. βAt least the headache seems a bit better now.β
βGood.β I run my hand along his arm. βWell, at least youβll be well-rested to help me interrogate my mom.β My stomach coils again into knots, writhing like a serpent unable to be tamed.
βSpeaking of that, you ready for this?β he asks, still blinking back his grogginess.
I stare at the dark house for a moment before shaking my head. βNot in the least.β With that, I take a deep breath and open my car door.
Wade follows me, trudging through the snow a couple of steps behind.
When I reach the door, I stand there, staring at it as if itβs suddenly some massive obstacle between me and my future.
βContemplating how the door will bring about world peace?β Wade asks, chuckling under his breath beside me.
I shoot him a sideways glance and lift my arm. Knocking on the door a few times, I take a step back and wait. Mom will be thrilled to see usβthat part is certain. Itβs what comes afterward that Iβm worried about.
The two of us stand there a moment, listening for sounds of movement from inside, but everything remains dark. After another minute, I knock again.
βItβs pretty dark in there. Do you think sheβs still at work?β Wade offers, looking at his watch.
βMaybe?β I say. Truthfully, Iβve been so far out of the loop now, I donβt know what her normal routine looks like anymore.
I reach for my phone, pulling it from my coat pocket. Punching the keys for her number, I turn and face Wade, swapping my stance from foot to foot to warm up. The phone rings but ends up going to her voice mail. Dropping the phone, I slide it back into my pocket.
βNothing, huh?β
I frown. βNope.β
βDo you have a key? Or do we justββ
My attention is suddenly drawn from Wade to a female figure across the street. Standing beside the lamp post, her slight build and tall frame would be enough to draw my attention, but itβs the red peacoat and oversize hood that makes me stop and stare.
βWhat is it?β Wade asks, turning his gaze to follow mine.
I chance a glance in his direction as I lean in and whisper, βSee that woman over there? Does anything seemβ¦odd about her? Sheβs staring at us.β A strange, anticipatory energy lingers in the air between us and itβs like Iβm drawn to her. Even if I didnβt want to be, Iβd be helpless to stop myself.
βWell, this is a small town.β Wade chuckles. βSheβs probably checking to make sure weβre not going to rob the place. Who knowsβ¦maybe your mom asked her to watch the house while sheβs away?β
βNo, I donβt think so. Iβve never seen her before,β I mutter.
When I look back, the woman is gone from the lamp post. Instead, almost as if she teleported, sheβs at the other end of the block. Something inside me screams to follow her and without even stopping to tell Wade, I bound down the stairs and take off after her.
βAutumn, wait,β Wade says, leaping from the doorstep and following me.
His feet crunch heavily in the snow behind me, but the only thing I can concentrate on is the woman in front of me. By the time I reach the end of the block, the womanβs red coat disappears into the depths of the graveyard beyond and I pick up speed. I hit the interior of the graveyard, following the direction of the freshly made footsteps, searching for her red coat.
Without a doubt, thereβs something important about herβsomething I need to have answered. If only I can reach herβ¦
βAutumn, wait. What ifβ¦β he reaches out, grabbing my hand and pulling me up short. βWhat if itβs one of the Moirai?β
The word snaps me out of my trance like a slap in the face.
The Moiraiβ¦
I blink back my surprise, appalled that the thought hadnβt even entered my mind. It should have been
