And in the way he said it Karen knew sheβd touched a raw nerve.
βYeah, course, youβre right Guv, anyway, any info and insight you could offer me about it, well, Iβd appreciate it.β
Walter harrumphed.
βHeβs a very impressive man, by the way.β
βWho is? Greg?β
βNo, well yes he is too, but I meant Kit Napoleon.β
βIn what way?β
βHe is just so damned...β and she paused as if trying to think of the right word, and then she said, βcharismatic, no... magical, thatβs what he is, magical.β
βHeβs a snake charmer!β said Walter.
βYou seem to know a lot about it all of a sudden.β
βMet dozens of snake charmers in my time. Heβll charm every last penny out of your bank account, mark my words... if you let him.β
βIβm not a fool!β
βWell donβt act like one!β
And with that Karen picked up some files from the desk and disappeared in a mini huff down the corridor to the old paper records department.
DC Darren Gibbons sauntered in carrying a large polystyrene cup of coffee and a tablet computer.
βGlad you could make it,β mumbled Walter.
βSorry, Guv, I had another message to meet Patsy. He said it was urgent.β
βAnd?β
βLoad of tosh! Talking through his backside.β
βWould you care to elaborate?β
βI wouldnβt want to waste your valuable time, Guv.β
βLet me decide that, eh?β
βWell, Guv, he came out with some cock and bull story about some gangsters from the big smoke who have put up a big reward for anyone who can find one of their girlfriends whoβs done a runner, and I mean BIG money! The guy wants her back pdq. Must think a lot of her.β
βAny description? Of the girl?β
βFor what itβs worth, tall, white, educated, good looking, thatβs about it.β
Good looking is relative, thought Walter.
βDo we have a name?β
βNo, not that I know of.β
βAnd they think sheβs holed up somewhere round here?β
βNo, not particularly, I think itβs an all stations kind of alert.β
That was something at least.
βKeep in touch with Patsy about this. He might be on to something. Go and see him again tomorrow morning. Lean on him hard if you have to.β
βSure, Guv,β and Gibbons made to move away, but stopped and said, βDo you know something about this?β
βNo.β
βItβs just... you seem unusually interested.β
βNo, DC Gibbons, just interested, thatβs all, not unusually interested. Good detectives always pay attention to any intel that comes from the streets, you know that.β
βYeah sure, Guv. Whatever you say.β
Gibbons sat down, still thought it a bit odd, and began making phone calls.
Walter went online. Logged on to Artesia.bmgβs website.
Made interesting reading too.

At the end of the day, Walter asked Karen to drop him off at the supermarket.
βDidnβt really think of you as a supermarket kind of man,β said Karen, as they headed onto the ring road.
βWe all have to eat, Karen.β
βMmm,β she said, unconvinced.
On the way he said, βI looked into Artesia.β
βDid you? Thanks. And?β
βLooks pretty genuine. Based in Austria. Now why would that be?β
βI have no idea.β
βPerhaps a tax dodge? Doesnβt mean to say that Kit Napoleon and his frizzy plans are all above board and legit, mind.β
βIs Kit on Artesiaβs board?β
βNo.β
βWhat do you make of that?β
βIt would have been better if he was.β
βIβve been thinking...β
βWhat about?β
βIf Kit Napoleonβs business is above board and legit I have nothing to worry about, while on the other hand if heβs bent and up to no good, maybe we should know about it anyway.β
βSo what are you proposing?β
βWell, I thought if I put some money in, it would make it a lot easier to get involved, and investigate, from the inside, kind of thing.β
βAnd if itβs dodgy you lose your money, while if itβs not, you might, and I say MIGHT in capital letters, you might get your cash back.β
βSomething like that.β
βAnd youβre willing to invest three grand of your own money just to find out?β
βWell, thatβs the thing, Guv, I was wondering if you could have a word with Mrs West...β
βOh no! There is no way on earth I am going to ask my boss to tie up public cash with this Napoleon character, and even if I did, sheβd bounce me in an instant.β
βPity,β Karen said. βIn that case I might have to bite the bullet and do it myself.β
βYou know my thoughts on that, I think youβll lose your cash, but if there is anything I can help you with, you only have to ask.β
βThanks, Guv,β and as she said that she pulled the unmarked car into the supermarket car park. βBut Artesiaβs good, yeah?β
βLooks that way.β
βThanks again.β
Walter nodded and said, βBe careful!β and slid out of the car and grabbed a trolley, and even that appeared a wee bit odd to her, Walter limping away, pushing a clattering trolley.

He bought more than he intended, but didnβt everyone in these palaces of consumption? Heβd planned to get the free bus service back into town and then the usual bus back home, but there was a small taxi rank outside the store and the temptation was too great, and he really did not fancy wandering around, waiting for buses with three bags of supermarket swag.
The taxi driver was a chatty middle-aged woman with blonde hair and dark roots.
βSpent a lot, βave ya, mate?β
βToo much.β
βSβalways the way.β
βTis that.β
βWhatβs your line of business, if you donβt mind me asking?β
Tell no one nothing; that old line came back into his head.
βIβm a zookeeper.β
βAre ya? How exciting. Love the zoo, me. Take the grandkids as often as I can. Donβt suppose you have any free tickets?β
βSorry, we donβt get them anymore.β
βTypical,β she said, βmiserable sods,β and she clicked her tongue and shook her head. βWhat animals are you on?β
βEh?β
βWhat
