βThe children...β I manage, my voice thick with remorse. How many more people are going to die because of me? βTheyβre all that matter.β I set Jamisonβs body back against the sofa cushions and close the manβs eyelids. βMay I have a word with the sergeant?β
βOf course!β Willard nods to Perch, who prods Bishop forward with the gun muzzle flat against his skull. βThis should prove to be quite entertaining.β
βTalk to your little buddy, jarhead,β Perch sneers.
Bishop stands like a statue, eyeing me warily.
βIn private,β I clarify.
Perch laughs out loud.
Willard frowns. βNo, I donβt think so. Whatever you have to say, I want to hear it. Perhaps it will grant me some insight into the grand scheme you were planning to accomplish here.β
βThe children,β I repeat.
βThe UW is on their way here,β Bishop says. βBut they wonβt arrive before Cainβs bunch.β
βCain?β Willard looks mildly interested.
βYou havenβt met him yet,β I reply. βHeβs from the coast, and he has a couple dozen well-trained warriors as fast as I am. Heβs coming here to take the children from you.β
βNot exactly,β Bishop says. βHeβ¦wants them dead.β
βOh?β Willard glances at Perch.
βFirst Iβve heard of it,β Perch growls. βMaking up this stuff isnβt gonna help you any.β
βYouβll find out for yourselves soon enough,β Bishop returns.
βHow do you know?β I ask.
Bishop looks uncomfortable all of a sudden. He lowers his voice. βI had a little help getting here.β
I nod slowly. That explains how he arrived ahead of Luther and Cainβs people. βThe spirits?β
βRight.β Bishop bites his lip.
Willard throws his hands into the air. βCould we be more specific, please? Unless youβre both speaking in code, which I will not abide.β
βThe spirits of the earth.β The Julia-spirit was right: there is something special about this UW marine. βThey brought you here?β
βYeah. In aβ¦dust devil or something.β Bishop avoids eye contact.
I raise my eyebrows. βThatβs new.β
Willard curses. βSo the sand freaks have their own religion now? Isnβt the God of the universe good enough for you people?β
βNot the one you believe in,β I reply. βYouβve molded him into your own image.β I sound like Luther. He must be rubbing off on me.
βMove the dogs into position,β Willard orders Perch. βAll of them! Now!β
Without a word, Perch holsters the spare semiautomatic and retrieves the remote control. He makes a show of pressing three buttons in sequence. βTheyβll hold the perimeter.β
βNow youβre protecting the babies?β I shake my head. Hard to keep up.
βSafeguarding my investment.β Willard stands and starts pacing, stroking his narrow mustache. βMy deal with Chancellor Hawthorne will be null and void if there are no fetuses for the UW when they arrive.β
βThe UW is right here.β Bishop holds out his hands. βLetβs discuss terms before things getββ
Willard laughs harshly, looking the sergeant up and down in his sweat-stained bodysuit. βI donβt think so. The only reason youβre still alive is to keep Milton in his place.β He casts me a disgusted look. βHe seems to think your lifeβs worth something.β
βMr. Willardββ
βCaptain!β Perch roars.
Bishop doesnβt blink. βCaptain Willard, I understand that youβve been in communication with Chancellor Hawthorne. You have to understand that the peopleβsand freaks, as you refer to themβon their way here intend to destroy your investment.β He glances at me. βThe ones leading the pack, anyway. I donβt know what Milton was planning to do, but allow me to offer a word of advice from one military man to another.β
Yeah right. Willard doesnβt qualify. But Bishop has his attention.
βGo on.β
βYou need to lock down this place until the UW arrives, sir. You need to release your men from their quarters and get them ready for battle. Because from what Iβve seen of Cain and his warriors, they are very good at what they do.β
I half-expected Luther and Cainβs people to fight their way into Eden and barricade themselves against the UW troops. But now that Cain appears to be more of a threat than Willard, I find myself rethinking the entire situation. Maybe Bishopβs right.
βWhat do you have to say?β Willard stares at me.
βThe sergeant makes a good point. Iβll have to defer to him on this.β
Perch snickers, but Willard shoots him a look that quiets him down. βFor the moment, I would say that keeping those incubation pods in working order is in our combined best interest. Wouldnβt you agree?β
βYes sir,β Bishop replies in military fashion.
I nod, even as my insides twist in revulsion at the thought of teaming up with Arthur Willard. But Eden has to be protected from the impending onslaught where Luther, Daiyna, Samson, Shechara, and all the others, ignorant of Cainβs ultimate plans, will fight alongside him and his warriors.
Will the spirits aid them? Hinder them? Will Jackson appear as Gaia, soaking up the adoration of Cain and his people, leading them to slaughter at the claws and fangs of Willardβs collared daemons?
Itβs all too horrifying to imagine.
βA ceasefire, then.β Willard extends his right hand. βWe work together to fortify Eden, and we set aside our disagreements for the time being. After the UW troops arrive, weβll take another look at where we stand. Agreed?β
I glance from Willard to Bishop, whoβs rocking a steely-eyed gaze. Perch grins like a lunatic, enjoying the awkward silence way too much.
βAgreed.β Gun literally to his head, Bishop shakes with Willard.
βAlright.β Iβm next to clasp Willardβs clammy hand, and I feel an instant wave of regret wash over me.
βExcellent.β Willard frowns at Perch, who withdraws his gun from Bishopβs skull. βGet these men proper uniforms. If theyβre going to protect Eden from the powers of unholy darkness, then they need to look like God-fearing Eden Guardsmen!β
Perch nods. But he seems reluctant to leave. βIβll inform the men. They should know these two are on our side now.β He winks at me.
I give him the finger.
βOf course,β Willard says. βWe wouldnβt want to see our new allies downed by friendly fire, would we?β
Bishop gives me a crisp nod, and I have only a split-second to wonder what it means. Then he spins on one
