I found another hole in Connellβs account. βIf I was so important to Lichβs plan, why has he allowed me to take on such dangerous work?β I was thinking of all the close calls Iβd had over the years.
βDid he allow it?β Connell asked. βConsider the times you were ordered to stand down or that someone intervened directly on your behalf.β
I thought about Chicory showing up to save me from the druids in Central Park. It was the same night heβd ordered me off the demon cases.
βThe rest of the time,β Connell said, preempting my next challenge, βyou were aided by Whisperer magic. Coming up with a solution, often a lifesaving one, at just the right moment.β
βThatβs called a luck quotient. All wizards have it.β
βIs that what you were told?β Connell asked, the genuineness in his tone rankling me.
I rounded on him. βYouβre telling me thereβs no Order and thatβs why no oneβs coming. Thatβs the argument youβre going with, right? Fine. I can use it too. Thereβs no Lich. Want to know how I know? Because I destroyed your book, and lookβ¦β I peered over both shoulders. ββ¦no Lich.β
I crossed my arms smugly. Checkmate.
βHe already came,β Connell said calmly.
βWhen I was out?β
βNo, before.β
βBefore?β
βEverson,β he said, looking at me gravely, βChicory is Lich. Itβs one of his guises.β
I uncrossed my arms, unsure now what to do with them. For a disorienting moment I was sitting beside Chicory in his car after the druid encounter. The Order can seem like an abstraction sometimes, he was saying, but when it comes to their mandates, theyβre rather black and white. Trust me. Iβve had to take care of two wayward wizards this month already.
I remembered how dark and mercenary my mentorβs eyes had looked.
βForget it,β I said, shaking off the memory. βYouβre never going to convince me of that.β
βMy job isnβt to convince you,β Connell said. βItβs to give you enough information so you can investigate the claims for yourself. You need to decide whether what Iβm telling you is true.β
βI know what I saw.β
βYou saw what he wanted you to see.β
I was barely aware of my fingers massaging the spot where Chicory had mashed his thumb. I felt a ghost of the pressure that had manifested behind my eyes and deep in my ears.
βIf this crap youβre telling me is true, why the hard sell?β I asked. βYou killed him.β
βDestroyed his form,β he corrected me. βAnd only because heβd activated the powerful enchantment inside your blade. No, the being that is Lich can only be killed by destroying the glass pendant in which he stores his claimed souls. Naturally, he keeps the pendant hidden. His new body is forming beside it as we speak, coalescing from the magic within. He will be back soon.β
An involuntary shudder passed through me. βAre you done?β
βFor now, yes.β

I followed Connell and Arianna down the steep steps of the palace to where the rocky hill flattened to the plain. Arianna had returned everything to me, including my sword and staff, claiming to have purified them of Whisperer magic. I carried both in my hands and kept a charge of energy around my prism. Neither of my escorts seemed to mind, which bothered me.
When we arrived on the plain, Connell whistled and one of the mastiffs hustled over, tongue lolling. I looked the dog over carefully as it sniffed me and then trotted beside us, escorting us toward the forest. It wasnβt acting like a warg, but that could be illusory too, I reminded myself.
βTo avoid additional holes in our realm,β Connell said, βweβre sending you back the way you came through.β
Or are you taking me into the forest to sacrifice me? I thought.
But theyβd already had plenty of opportunities, and that bothered me, too.
Soon, the trees took us in. Not the dark, fungus-riddled trees Iβd arrived through, but a healthy growth of what looked like oak and spruce. After several more minutes we arrived at a small clearing.
βHere,β Connell said, stopping.
As I arrived at the center of the clearing, he and Arianna stepped back.
βDo you have any more questions?β he asked.
βNo.β
βIβm sure youβve been wondering about your father,β Arianna said. βHe visited your bedside while you slept. He is anxious to meet you and for you to meet him, but only when that is what you desire.β
I had been wondering about him, of course, but I didnβt let it show on my face. The man had killed my mother. Iβd seen it, experienced it. The horror stuck like barbs around my heart. Even so, Connell had done his job. Heβd managed to plant enough doubt in my head that I had no choice but to investigate his claims. Try to figure out what in the hell was going on.
βAre we going to get this party on, or what?β I asked impatiently.
βThere is one more thing,β Connell said. βOnce Lich reconstitutes himself, heβs going to come after you. Whether to seduce you anew or end you, I canβt say. He got what he wanted by sending you here. The Elder book contained powerful magic to keep Dhuul from the world. Its destruction did not weaken our stronghold here so much as increase Dhuulβs, and thus Lichβs, power. Knowing you have spent time with us, Lich will see you as a threat.β
βYou have four days,β Arianna said, βno more.β
βAnd then, let me guess, I have to come back here, right?β
βIf you want to live,β Connell said bluntly. βYouβll have no defenses against his magic out there.β
βWhy do you care?β
He looked at me for a moment. βBecause youβre one of us.β
βSo are all magic-users, if what youβre saying is true. Why arenβt you helping them?β
βWe have no way to reach them,β he said. βWhen Lich discovered us, he sealed us in. Though your arrival came with a cost, it also presents a new opportunity. We canβt come and go, but you can.β
Is that why they
