Maritime Tradition in Wexford Street Names
Antelope Road: named to commemorate ships of the same name.
Bayview Drive: modern estate reflecting the scene visible from there.
Common Quay Street: possibly the location for the general landing of cargo in the days of private quays.
Coolcotts: an interesting derivation is suggested as Coill Cots or wood of the cots, perhaps where timber for boats grew.
Crescent Quay: from the shape of the Deep Pool.
Custom House Quay: from one of the locations of the Custom House.
Devereux Villas: from the Devereux family of merchants and shipowners.
Dolphin Road: another popular ship name, also the sea creature.
Edenvale Avenue: a ship of Wexford Port.
Ferryboat Lane: an old name for Monck Steeet, from wher the ferryboat to Ferrybank departed.
Fishers Row: probably from the occupation of the residents.
Gaffneys Lane: old title of Charlotte St., after the Gaffneys, shipowners.
Gulbar Road: from a sand bar, The Gull Bar, in Wexford Harbour.
Hantoon Road: this street is named after both the ship and in turn, a wave system in the harbour.
Menapia Avenue: from the ship Menapia and the old name for Wexford.
Oyster Lane: from the famous oyster taverns of a century ago.
Redmond Road: after the Redmond family, involved in politics, business, shipbuilding and land reclamation.
Saltee Avenue: another ship of the port, also islands off the south coast.
Seaview Avenue: from the view.
Slaney Street: before reclamation in the 1800s, the river lapped this road.
Trimmers Lane: a trimmer or trummer stowed cargo or ballast to keep a ship on an even keel.
Tuskar View: descriptive.
