I joke.

This earns me a glare from Dallas.

"What? Can’t I have guys that I wouldn't mind being a notch on their bedpost?" I roll my eyes and try to hide my smile. He pulls into the parking area, and before I even realize what’s going on, he has my seatbelt undone, and he's pulling me into his lap.

He doesn't say anything, as he just stares into my eyes, like he's trying to tell me something he can't find the words to say.

"You’re too good to be a notch on anyone’s bedpost. It's why I kept you at arm’s length for so long. How you can forgive my past and be here with me today, I will never know, but I’m so grateful you are."

Then, his lips are on mine, and it's a gentle kiss full of promises. When I try deepening the kiss, he pulls away. That small, short kiss has me already on edge. All these sexy kisses leading to nothing are driving me crazy.

"Let's get this meeting over with." He opens his door, carries me out his side, and then sets me on my feet. Then, he gives me a pained look.

"I will proudly hold your hand in there, but I think it's best they don't know about it, before Landon does." He says.

"I agree. And just so you know, I'd proudly hold your hand in there and anywhere." I don't just say the words; I mean them with everything in me.

We walk in checking in with the receptionist, and then sit in the waiting room.

"What’s this meeting about?" I ask.

"The new album they want us to start working on. I'm sure this will be their 'suggestions' of the direction we should go." He says.

"Don't let them bully you. You guys are good, and your fans love you. They'd be good to remember that." I tell him honestly.

He grins, but Mitch comes out, before he can reply.

"Dallas, we're ready." He stands and looks at me.

"Go do your thing." I hold up my phone. "I have a book to read."

"I won't be long." He says and heads back.

The receptionist looks at me and smiles. "What are you reading?" She asks.

I pull the romance book I'm reading, as she comes to sit beside me, and we talk books and swap titles. Turns out, we love to read the same dirty romance novels, and she gave me some good suggestions.

"I've never met anyone who reads the same things I do." She says almost shyly.

"Me either." I smile. "I'm Austin," I say.

"Deanna." She smiles. "How do you know Dallas?" She asks, her shyness showing again.

"Oh, his band mate Landon is my brother. Landon's out of town, and he's nice enough to let me tag along today, because I needed to get out of the house." I shrug.

"You're Landon's sister?" Her eyes go wide, and she chuckles.

"Yeah, guilty. Please, don't hold it against me." I laugh.

She looks back down the hallway Dallas disappeared, too.

"I have been working here two years and both of them are always nice, when they come in. Once, I was carrying some boxes from my car, and Landon stepped in to help me. I mean, a famous rock star helped me carry file boxes. Who would believe me?"

"Good, I'm glad he helped, or I'd have kicked his ass, and he knows it. Same with Dallas. I made sure they had manners. They can go to parties and do whatever, but they will treat a lady with respect or answer to me." I say.

"Yeah, I learned that one the hard way." Dallas grins, as he walks back into the room.

Deanna jumps up. "Sorry, Mr. McIntire." She says and runs back to her desk.

He looks at me with a questioning look, before turning to her. "You can call me Dallas, and there’s nothing to be sorry about. I appreciate you keeping Austin company for me."

Deanna smiles and ducks her head. You would think working at the label she'd be used to getting attention from the musicians in and out of here each day.

I stand up and walk over to her desk.

"So, feel free to say no, but I’d love to talk books again with you and have someone to discuss them, as we read them. Would you want to exchange phone numbers? I'm going to read that sugar daddy one you recommended next." I say.

"Oh, I'd love that. I'm going to read the one you’re reading now, when I get home." She hands me her phone, and I put in my number and send myself a quick text.

As I'm handing her phone back to her, Dave walks out.

"Oh, Dallas, I'm glad I caught you. One more thing..." Dave says, but stops dead in his tracks, when he sees me.

The look he gives me creeps me out and kind of makes me want to rip his eyes out. It's leery and causes me to do something I haven't done in years. I move to stand behind Dallas and use him as a shield.

"What the fuck?" Dallas growls.

Chapter 14

Dallas

The look he’s giving Austin pisses me off more than I can ever remember. But when it makes her so uncomfortable, she slips behind me to get out of his line of sight, and then it's time for me to step in.

"What the fuck?" I growl.

"I... um... I just thought she was in Maine. I didn't expect to her here." Dave stumbles over his words.

Austin rests her head against my back, and I know she can feel how tense I am. It's taking everything in me not to launch at this guy. I know Landon would have my back with this, whatever the consequences are.

"What the fuck does it matter? You don't look at her, and you don't fucking breathe in her direction again. You fucking got it?" I growl.

Dave's eyes go wide, and he just nods.

"Good, now whatever you came out here to say, you can shove it." I turn and wrap my arm around Austin's shoulders and drag her
