mark."
Nado glimpsed her view screen for the first time. A red diamond adorned the
forehead of his child. While contemplating his next move, the security team grabbed
him. His grasp on Bena abandoned as he writhed against the powerful guards. She
apologized.
"I'm sorry, sir. We must destroy it. The Agan wills it."
Bena moved her hand toward the abort button. Time seemed to slow for Nado.
He looked to the birthing chamber one last time. The mark of a forbidden child was
familiar from the teachings. The Chronicles of Majjen had been clear on the matter, but as obligation rose within him, duty to family overwhelmed his logic. His wife's screams solidified his purpose. He steeled himself, tensing each sinew in his body while
marshaling every ounce of training from years past. He kicked one guard in the shin,
sending him to the ground. A percussion weapon he snatched from the other's holster.
BLAST!
Bena flailed backward from the shot as a guard grabbed Nado's arm. As they
wrestled over the weapon, eye to eye, Nado sensed an opening. His scorpion tail curled.
The guard's massive iris impaled by the stinger. As he recoiled in pain, the General
finished the job.
BLAST! BLAST!
He dispatched both guards with one shot each. His thoughts turned swiftly to
Cata as her screams continued over the intercom. He blasted the control room glass and jumped into the birthing chamber.
Nado approached his still screaming wife with slow and deliberate steps, the
stolen weapon aimed at the child.
Rojan offered a brief look before focusing on Cata, still secured against the metal
chair. The baby latched on to her distended chest, feeding as a wild animal.
She screamed louder as Rojan consumed both milk and flesh. His infant body
streaked with purple blood made opaque by his mother's lacteal cream.
Nado closed in while staring down the barrel.
The child paused his consumption, gazing directly at dad. His head cocked
sideways.
The General stopped, an unseen force making it difficult to continue. Had Rojan
blocked his advance? He knew the child held him, still as a statue, grasping his mind in a virtual vice.
Staring at the father, Rojan's eyes grew wide.
The arm of Nado moved by silent command of the newborn. As the gun creeped
closer to his own head, Nado fixated on his wife, still secured and bleeding into the
birthing chamber. She tried turning her head but could only manage a peek.
"I love you, Nado!" she screamed through tears.
He twitched at her voice, unable to speak, every muscle battling against Rojan's
mental assault. Still, the percussion weapon found its mark. The barrel pointed at his snake-like head. His bony finger landed on the trigger.
BLAST!
Nado fell silent. His mind fading to Cata's screams as Rojan devoured her.
