“Because I said so. No questions, Gia. For once, no questions.” I hear the plea in his tone and nod once to show I get it. He smiles sadly. “I miss him so fucking much, G,” he adds. “How the hell do I do this without him?”
I smile sympathetically. “You were already doing it, Vinn. You’d pretty much taken over everything. You can do it.”
He sighs heavily. “Interesting news, by the way,” he says, changing the subject. “The biker thinks he can have my sister.” He quirks his eyebrow in a way that tells me he’s being playful. I grin.
“I told him no,” I say.
“And he listened?” he asks. I shake my head. “Over-confident ass. What can he bring to this family? Apart from his bodyguard skills?”
“Sometimes it’s not about that,” I say, heading for the door. “Sometimes it’s about a little thing called love,” I add.
I hear him scoff as I leave. “No such thing,” he shouts to me. Somehow, just knowing that my marriage to Ric is off makes me feel a hundred times lighter.
BLU
I glare at Blade, who’s chewing on that damn red liquorice again as we wait in the dark, watching the same building we did just over a week ago where we saw Ricardo and Cobra together. We’ve done the same thing night after night, confirming our suspicions that Cobra has started another MC. The kuttes they wear say ‘Cobra MC’ on the patches. How original. Now, we know that Cobra is a direct threat to the Kings Reapers and it’s something we can’t allow.
“What is it with you and the damn red stuff?” I snap.
“I keep visiting that new sweet shop on the high street. The owner is hot as fu—”
“I don’t wanna know,” I cut in. My phone buzzes and I pull it out. “Riggs,” I answer.
“Any sign of Cobra?” he asks. Since that night last week, we haven’t spotted Cobra again. We should have taken him out there and then, but without knowing why he was meeting Ricardo, it was too risky.
“Nothing, Pres. Loads of club members around, but not him.”
“I’ve got a meeting with Vinn. Meet me at his place so we can update him.”
Vinn and his dad shared the office at their home, but it feels weird sitting in here without Enzo around. Vinn loosens his tie and leans back in his chair. “I asked Ricardo when he returned from Italy. He lied. He’s joining us in ten minutes for this meeting,” he says, checking his watch. “We talk about the girls and the mission to get them clean. We don’t talk about any other of our deals or mention the docks.” We nod in agreement. “He thinks he’s marrying my sister.”
“And is he?” I ask.
Vinn smirks, glancing at Riggs before shaking his head. “Not if he’s making deals behind my back. Let me lead the conversation. I want him to think my guard is down. Just inviting him to this meeting will get him thinking I’m making poor decisions. He isn’t in my family yet and usually he wouldn’t be invited to this sort of thing. If he thinks I’m fucking up, he might show his hand sooner.”
Ricardo arrives right on time, looking smug as he takes a seat. “I was just keeping Riggs up to speed on things,” says Vinn. “I have funded a new refuge. It’s named after my grandmother, Sophia’s Place.”
“What exactly happens to these women?” asks Blade.
“I work with a refuge that helps women suffering domestic abuse. We get them to safety and then help them to get back their lives. Most of the women in my employment have come from that sort of background.”
“I thought you brought women in from abroad?” I ask.
“Sometimes we’re contacted to help. That doesn’t happen too often, but when it does, I try and do what I can.”
“Illegal immigrants?” asks Ric.
“The mayor is on board” is all Vinn says in response.
“I think Anna would love to help out with that sort of thing,” says Riggs. “She’s talking about doing something other than staying at home with the kids.”
“We always need volunteers,” says Vinn. “Sophia’s Place will open in ten days. If you have any work coming up, legit work that is, think about giving these women a shot. Do we have any news on Cobra?” he asks casually, but I see his eyes flick to Ricardo to see his reaction on hearing the name.
“Nothing,” says Riggs. “All’s quiet on that front. Maybe the snake’s gone back into hiding.”
“You know I’m happy to help the club if he’s becoming a problem,” says Vinn.
“Cobra?” repeats Ric.
“Used to be the president at the Kings Reapers in Manchester,” explains Riggs. “A real nasty piece of work. Not how I want my club represented.”
“He’s a coward,” I add. “Goes after women and kids because he’s too scared to come after the big boys.”
“And you think he’s in London?” asks Ric.
“I know he is,” says Riggs. “His time is coming.”
“We only deal with Riggs and his men,” says Vinn. “This is their territory and the partnership is working well. If, sorry, when, you join my family, you’ll also be expected to only work with the Kings.”
Ricardo nods. “Of course,” he says with a smile.
The door opens and Gia enters. She’s wearing a white wool dress that reaches just under her ass with boots. Her tanned legs are on show and, damn, it gets my cock twitching. She smiles wide and I avert my eyes. Her smile makes me wanna do things to her mouth.
“Ric,” she says with an element of surprise in her voice. “Joining the family meetings?”
“I thought it would do him well to meet the Kings seeing as he’ll be working alongside them soon enough,” says Vinn. “Should we discuss a date while we’re here?” he suggests. I can tell that Vinn hadn’t prepared Gia for this part because she pales and her mouth opens and closes but
