I was saved by the bell, literally. I hurried over to open the door and was not at all surprised to see Morgan. Frankly I was surprised he hadn’t shown his face sooner. “Hey, man.” I stepped back and let him in.
“Hey. Sorry to drop in unannounced. I didn’t interrupt anything did I?”
I just laughed at his totally unsubtle nosiness. “Your sister’s in the bedroom. I’ll go get her.”
“Cool. I’ll just wait here. Hey, there’s her red bean bag. She must be stoked about that.” Morgan looked pretty stoked himself and I realized he’d been worried about Nico settling into my place. I could imagine why. My décor was pretty stark, all chosen by some trendy interior designer, while Nico’s furniture was more homey and comfortable. It definitely should have clashed, but it didn’t. Instead, it added aesthetically pleasing splashes of color to my otherwise neutral space.
Kinda like Nico did.
I stepped in the room and found Nico in her closet, bent over with her ass in the air. It was an excellent view and I took a moment to savor it before speaking. “Hey, Nico, Morgan’s here.”
Her head whipped around and she looked at me with wide eyes. “Have you heard of knocking?”
I cocked an eyebrow. “On my own door?”
Her brow furrowed and she looked confused. “Umm. Sorry. Used to living alone.” She shrugged self-deprecatingly.
“No worries. I suppose we’ll get used to being in each other’s spaces slowly.”
“Yeah, I guess. You said Morgan’s here?”
“Yeah. Come on, before he comes to see what’s keeping us. He’s such an anxious sort. Who knew?”
Nico laughed, much to my surprise. “I did.”
She walked out of the bedroom and I followed her, shamelessly ogling her ass. Sue me; her soft curves were irresistible in sweatpants…or anything else really.
“Hey, Morgan. What’s up?” she said.
He looked up from the magazine he’d been pretending to read, looking her over carefully. “Well, your hubby here wanted me to outfit you with some biometric keys if you have the time for me.”
“Uh, yeah, he said you’d be by.”
“Well, don’t sound so happy to see me.” Morgan seemed a bit grumpy. I had to grin.
Nico put her arms around him. “Don’t pout. It’s unbecoming of a grown man. Come on, what I gotta do?”
Morgan pointed at his cheek, still pouting, and she reached up and kissed it. I quirked an eyebrow, never having seen this dynamic between them. “There, is that better?” Nico said.
“A little.”
She laughed, even as she urged him to get the biometric stuff over with. He led her to the office, explaining the process to her. “It’s no big deal to set up, but it’s much more secure than a key because only you can use it.”
“Yeah, unless a thief cuts off my finger,” Nico protested.
Morgan grinned. “It doesn’t work with dead limbs.”
She rolled her eyes. “Great. Thank you for that visual, Morgan. That’s why I love you.”
“You know it. Now put your hand on this pad.”
I sat down on the couch, listening to them go back and forth, so comfortable with each other. In a way, I envied them. Their life had been horrendously hard, but at least they had each other. Before Morgan stumbled into my life, I had no one. It was a lonely life.
Soon they returned to the living room. “All done,” Morgan said.
I nodded. “Good. You staying for dinner?”
He tilted his head slightly in consideration. “Won’t I be intruding?”
“Don’t be silly. This isn’t The Notebook or nothin’. Come sit. I ordered some postmates. They should be by soon.”
As I turned to go to the couch, I saw Nico’s face. She looked stricken for some reason and I froze, not knowing what to do. If I should ask her what was wrong. But then she turned away from me and put a smile on her face, saying something teasing to Morgan.
I sat down and tried to put that expression out of my mind, as I listened to their banter. I went to answer the door when the food arrived, and insisted on doing the serving by myself, seeing as I knew where the plates were and Nico didn’t.
Morgan looked from his sister to me. “You know; this is kinda great. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before.”
“What is great?” I asked.
“You and Nico together. I mean, I know you’re just using each other at the moment, but I think you could be really good for each other. Give it some thought.”
Way ahead of you, buddy.
I didn’t voice my thoughts, just cocked an eyebrow at him. Nico was watching me, her eyes intent. I couldn’t help wondering what she was thinking. Whatever it was, she kept her own counsel.

Sitting in my new house and having dinner with my brother and my husband was a trip. It was everything I didn’t know how to dream about. Still, my anxiety wouldn’t let me live. It latched on to Dom’s dismissiveness when Morgan had tried to give us some privacy and made it a bigger thing than it was.
Insecurities truly are the devil.
Watching Dom laughing and joking with Morgan as they regaled me with stories of their teenage selves, he looked pretty content. But his words, they kept echoing in my head.
This isn’t The Notebook.
Such an innocent throwaway statement and it had my heart contracting with pain as if he’d repudiated our marriage.
I tried to distract myself as best I could. “So are you guys going to finally tell me about your gang?”
Dom’s eyebrow quirked in that way that had him looking superior to everyone around him. “Gang?” He looked at Morgan, brow furrowed. “We have a gang?”
Morgan shook his head as if he had no idea what I was talking about. “Not that I know of.”
I threw the pillow at Morgan. “C’mon, you know what I mean. When you were in New Orleans. You guys were in a gang, right?”
Dom and Morgan gave each other a look before turning back
