βInspector Walter Darriteau,β he said, offering his hand.
She took it and let his huge paw squeeze her tiny olive hand, as she said, βActing Inspector Jun Woo of the Hong Kong Police Force. Am I glad to see you.β
βAnd I you, Jun. We have been working on the same thing for some time.β
Walter introduced her to those members of the team present, and Jun glanced down at the desk and saw the billposters featuring Yet Kwai Dang.
She picked one up and said, βWhoβs this?β
Karen said, βYet Kwai Dang, Chinese national, murdered and found in the car park outside the swimming pool.β
βDo you know her?β asked Walter.
Jun shook her head, said, βDonβt think so.β
βDo you want to tell us everything you know?β
βYes of course. But thereβs something more important. I had a friend on the boat, the ship, her name is Fenfang Dong. Sheβs tall, for a Chinese girl. They sold her into prostitution. I canβt help but worry for her. They sent her to a club in Manchester called the Cicero Club. Can you send officers there... itβs urgent.β
Walter nodded at Karen and she said, βIβm on it,β and picked up the phone and rang Manchester HQ.
βTell us all about it,β said Walter.
Jun grasped the edge of the desk and suddenly looked unsteady on her feet.
βGet her a chair!β said Mrs West.
Jan jumped up and slipped his chair behind her.
βWhen did you last eat?β asked Walter.
Jun shook her head, as if trying to remember, as if it didnβt matter.
βAges ago... I canβt remember.β
βIβll get her a coffee,β said Jenny, and she went to the machine.
Walter ripped open his second pack of Coronation chicken sandwiches and passed them over. Karen was talking on the phone and they all heard her say, βYes, thatβs right, the Cicero Club,β and she reached in her bag and took out a bottle of peach flavoured water, and handed it to Jun and she snapped off the top and sank it almost in one go.
βIβm all right, Iβm all right,β she said, through chewing chicken sandwich, βItβs a company called Minstrel Electronics.β
βMinstrel Electronics!β boomed Walter. βThatβs on the bloody list! Who went there?β
βNot us,β said Jan in a hurry.
βMust be Gibbons and Hector,β said Jenny, setting hot sweet coffee on the desk.
βYou were on to it all along?β asked Jun.
βYes, but not quickly enough,β said Walter, showing Jun the list bearing Minstrelβs name. βWhereβs Gibbons now?β
βIβll ring him,β said Jan, and he took out his phone.
βGive me that!β said Walter.
Gibbons answered. βHello, poppie-wushka, canβt you live without me? What can I do for you now, sweetie-pie?β
βItβs me, Gibbons!β
βOh, hi, Guv, sorry. Whatβs up?β
βWhere are you?β
βWeβre in Bertieβs fish βnβ chip bar as we speak, and bloody lovely it is too,β and he belched as if to prove the point.
βHave you been to Minstrel Electronics?β
βYeah, sure Guv, dead as a doornail, nothing going on there.β
βItβs THE place, Gibbons! Who did you meet?β
Gibbons sat up straight and waved at Hector.
βJust two guys, a young nervous type, and an older cocky guy.β
βGet back there now, donβt go in, stay out of sight, weβll be there within the hour. These guys are desperate and dangerous and maybe armed. Donβt take any risks. Donβt go near them. Just monitor who comes and goes.β
βSure, Guv. How do you know all this, anyway?β
βExplain when we see you.β
βOkay, Guv. When we were there Hector thought there was something odd about the place.β
βWell Hector was right! Now lie low. Weβre on our way!β
Walter rang off and said, βJun?β
βYes?β
βAre they armed?β
Jun thought back to the first day sheβd gone through Minstrelβs doors. Recalled that first meeting with Pryce and Brinton and the other two men. Remembered the calls to Harry in Manchester, remembered Brinton striking her hard. But had she seen weapons? No, she had not, not that she could recall, but she wouldnβt have been surprised if they were.
βDidnβt see any guns, but these men are ruthless, I think they could well be armed.β
βHow many people are working in the factory?β asked Walter.
βA hundred and fifty.β
βA hundred and fifty!β said Mrs West, blowing out and tut-tutting.
βSo how come Gibbons and Hector didnβt pick up on that?β said Walter.
βProbably thinking of his belly,β said Karen, now off the phone from Manchester. βHe only ever thinks of the 4 Fβs.β
βWhich are?β said Mrs West, her curiosity piqued.
βFags, Football, Feasting and F...β
βFillies, I think the last one is,β said Walter.
βHow many British guys are we expecting to find?β asked Karen.
Jun thought for a second. βThe bosses, Brinton and Pryce, plus the two who picked us up from Liverpool docks, and thereβs an old guy, and I think a younger one too, but there may be more, but thatβs all I saw.β
βThereβs something important I want to ask you, Jun,β said Walter.
βGo ahead.β
βDid you see or hear anything about a white girl being held in the Minstrel factory?β And Walter clarified: βA very special white girl.β
βAll girls are special,β interjected Mrs West.
He gave her a look that said: I know that maβam, but you know what I mean!
Jun thought for a second.
βI never saw her, but there were some odd rumours, and Pryce once said when I was there...β and she racked her brains to get the words as accurate as she possibly could: βI want to talk about our star witness, thatβs what he said. I want to talk about our star witness, I thought it was odd at the time.β
βYouβre sure he said that?β
βDefinitely!β
βThatβs her!β said Walter. βThe star witness in the Barton Brothers murder trial. Jessica Stone is somewhere in the Minstrel Electronics factory!β
βUnless theyβve sold her on to Manchester as well,β suggested Karen.
βDonβt even think it,β said Walter.
βI think youβd better get down there now,β said Mrs West. βAnd go armed. And be careful!β
βOrganise an unmarked car!β said Walter.
Karen stood and slipped on her jacket and left to collect her weapon.
βHave you passed the
