His eyebrows skirt his hairline, but he says, βDeal? What do you mean?β
βI dunno. Youβre kinda quiet, and a little weird,β I chuckle.
βIβm not a hugeβ¦people fan, I guess,β he offers.
I shift around so I can lean my back against the chain-link fence to the left of us and nod. βI totally get that.β
βYou do?β he says, surprise painting his face.
βUh, duh. Yes. People suck. Did you not just hear about Dominic?β I chuckle.
Colton snickers, glancing down at the sandwich in his hand.
βCan I ask you a question?β I say, shooting him another significant look.
He shrugs.
I take a quick beat, trying to decide what it really is I want to ask.
βDo you know why Dominic would have written βThe Truth Shall Set You Freeβ in Latin on my car? I tried to get it out of him just now in the cafeteria, but all I got was the runaround.β
Colton taps his lips, but nods.
βYou do?β I say, tucking my legs in tighter so I can sit up straighter.
βYeah. Everybody does,β he whispers. βWell, pretty much everybody.β
βYouβve got to be kidding me,β I say, leaning closer.
He scratches at his left eyebrow for a moment before finally saying, βI dunno if itβs really any of our business, to be honest. It really should be something yourβ¦β His voice trails off.
I roll my eyes. βNot you, too. Your sister tried the same line of B.S. Come on, throw me a bone, would you? This is killing me.β
Coltonβs eyes widen, but he clears his throat and puts his sandwich back into his lunch sack.
βHow much do you know about the history here in Windhaven?β he finally asks.
βErm, I know this school is a big deal and my dad lives hereβ¦β I pause, thinking. βYep, thatβs about the gist.β
His face tightens as he winces.
βWell, if I were youβ¦I would start there,β he says, holding my gaze. The significance in this simple gesture makes the hairs on my arm and neck stand on end. βIt will shed a new light on things. Then we can talk more.β
Exhaling slowly, I nod and pull my knees up toward my body. Wrapping my arms around my legs, I bite the inside of my cheek. βFine,β I say, a bit more tersely than originally intended.
βI know this is all really confusing. I just donβt feel like itβs my place toβreally, you should talk to your Dadβ¦ Or do some digging on your own. But donβt rely on Google. It wonβt help. Youβll wanna go down to the county library if youβre going to look to external sources.β
I gawk at him. βI donβt even know where the county library is.β
βI canβ¦uh, show you sometime,β he says, looking at his lap. βI mean, if you want.β
I nod. βYeah, that would be great.β
Watching him closely, I canβt help but feel a certain amount of connection with him. He clearly has his own thing heβs into, but others donβt understand. It actually makes me want to get to know him a bit better.
βSo, come on. Whatcha reading?β I ask, trying to get a glimpse of the cover.
Colton stares at me like a deer in headlights.
I narrow my eyes.
βCome on, it canβt be that bad,β I laugh, pushing my way around him.
After a little bit of a struggle, I pull the book from behind his back.
βOh, Frankenstein,β I say, clutching the cover and sitting back down. βWell, I mean, sureββ
βYeah, Iβmββ
βI get it. Youβre one of those kids,β I laugh, handing it back.
βAnd what kind is that?β
βThe kind who reads ancient stories the rest of the school wouldnβt dream of touching, of course,β I laugh.
βAh,β he nods. βYeah, I guess I am.β
I shrug. βYeah, me too. At least to a degree. I havenβt read this one, but I have seen the movie, obviously.β
βItβs totally different,β he says.
βOf that, Iβm not surprised,β I say.
We sit in silence for a minute, listening to the sounds of birds and mostly peaceful quiet. Itβs a blissful break when there are no kids outside. Theyβre all enjoying their lunches, or still in class. And for whatever reason, no one is using the field.
βYou know, this whole move has been nothing but a weird, confusing mess. I mean, donβt get me wrong, I kinda like here better than I expected. But itβs just been so weird,β I say, talking to myself more than anything.
βYup,β he agrees.
βHow would you know?β I ask, chuckling to myself.
For the first time that I can remember, Colton actually smiles.
βWow, he does have a grin,β I say, pointing.
He laughs quietly, βYeah, wellβ¦donβt get too used to it.β
I snort, shaking my head. βIn all honesty, you should do it more often. It suits you.β
For the briefest of moments, I swear Coltonβs face flushesβbut in the darker light under the bleachers, itβs hard to tell.
He clears his throat, grabbing his lunch sack, and pushing to a stand. He holds out his free hand to me. βLunch is nearly over. Iβll walk you to your next class. You know, if you want.β
Nodding, I smile at him. βYeah, Iβd like that.β
I take his offering, and he pulls me to a stand.
Together, we walk back to the school in a strange, comfortable silence. Oddly enough, Iβm overcome by this strange sensation, like Iβve known him forever. Despite barely saying two words to one another before today, thereβs just something familiar about him. Maybe itβs because Iβm already sorta used to his sister?
When we get to the doors leading inside, Colton turns to me and says, βYou have Spellcasting Basics next, right?β
βWow. Uh, howβd you know that?β I say, turning to him in surprise.
He runs his hand across the back of his neck. βI uhβ¦β
I pull up short, βHave you beenβ¦keeping tabs on me?β
βWell, when you say it like thatβ¦β he begins.
My mouth drops open, βOh my god, you haveββ
βReally, itβs not as creepy as it sounds,β he says, waving his hands in front of his body. βI just know where Cat is and since sheβs
