โGood. I'm glad I have the support of the ruling clans of Big Timber. Another thing is...โ Holt closed his eyes, rubbing them with his finger and thumb as if he didn't want to say what he was about to. โLilith killed her father.โ
Gasps filled the room, each leader looking at the other.
Jillโs eyes were probably the widest. The lord responsible for killing Lucius and threatening Damien. The most feared vampire in the United States had been killed by his own daughter?
โIt's true. She killed her father in his sleep and taken up leadership of the coven. We don't know the full extent as to why yet. Howling has it she's planning something. Something big.โ Holt spoke, his own disbelief showing.
Chase, Kainโs beta, stood up, leaning his hands against the edge of the table. Chase was a younger lycan but still formidable. He kept his platinum hair military cut in honor of his father and was built like a surfer.
โSun's hell! What are we going to do about it?โ
โNothing yet. We don't know what it is. We just know she's moving and trying to get the coven ready. She could even be preparing to make more vampires, we just don't know. We'll keep you in the loop but I suggest, as the packs closer to the fire, you keep your noses to the breeze.โ Holt concluded what he said, sitting down.
โActually, I do have some news that needs to be addressed considering the danger it clearly poses.โ Cade spoke up. Something the man known as the โSilent soldierโ never did.
Kain glared at Cade, almost appearing to know where he was going.
โWhat of this mortal the vampires are so interested in? If my intel is correct, he is the bearer of the soul of a Purifier. I have been told many of you have had to save him on multiple occasions. Are you not concerned with the threat that poses to us?โ
โEnough Cade. That is none of your concern. I knew it would come up which is why I asked Jillian in here.โ Kainโs voice held an almost threatening tone.
โWhat mortal?โ Holt asked.
โMy apologies, Holt. I wasnโt going to mention him. His name is Damien and heโsโฆmy boyfriend.โ Jill replied, somewhat annoyed at Cadeโs call-out.
โIs what Cade says true? A Purifier? After so many centuries?โ
Kain took over the conversation. โHeโs still asleep, Holt. Itโs too soon. Leave it alone out of respect.โ
โAlright, if that's all, then we can adjourn. Holt, Cade, feel free to stay here. You can travel back home tomorrow. Extend my invitation to Nathaniel and Vincent. Tell him he can have a go at Kain in the cage, that'll have him jumping.โ Gabriel added, ending the fight he could see going on between Kain and Cade.
Jill turned to leave, her phone buzzed with a text from Damien.
โJill, hold up a minute.โ Gabriel called out, exerting his own authority as alpha.
โWhat is it, Gabriel?โ
โI spoke with Damien about this relationship between the two of you. I know you like him. Kain told me you showed him your other form but are you sure this is wise? Heโs a human. Iโm not too keen on the members of my pack getting killed for a mortal. Purifier or not.โ
โFang off, Gabriel. You know as well as I do the vampires donโt care. To them heโs a threat, plain and simple. Purifiers were mortal. They could be killed just like any lycan. Iโm not letting go of him, no matter what you say.โ Jill turned her back on him, leaving the room.
The doors slammed behind her.
Chapter Nine
Damien sat down in front of his laptop, opening it up to look at some of the photos he had taken over the years. Memories from different periods of his life illuminated the screen all at once.
His mom, Sarah laughed as she was pushed on the wooden swing his father had hung in the large tree that overshadowed their backyard. The early mornings on Christmas day when he would sneak into the living room to tear open his presents before his parents woke up only to be caught by his sister, Bree. She would blackmail him to do something for her to keep her from telling their parents. Memories of him and Bree in their Halloween costumes at the age of six. It all reminded him of how simple life used to be compared to now.
Bree left home after their mom died, to find work in marketing and journalism. Damien rarely ever spoke to his sister. They usually always fought and she made it clear she never wanted him there in the first place.
Damien continued scrolling through the photos, each carrying a mix of both joy and sadness at the happiness their family used to have before his accident.
The full moon had just begun to peak over the trees. It made Damien wonder if Jill was out in the form of the beautiful wolf whose photo he still wanted to add to his album. Heโd meant to get it when he first saw Jill transform but once again, he didnโt have his camera.
Pushing his rolling chair away from his desk, Damien looked up at the ceiling. His head rested on his arms crossed behind it.
A knock on his door caught Damienโs attention. โCome in.โ he said, his voice muffled by the pen in his mouth.
Charlie opened the door,
