The door to 3A suddenly opened and a smart woman in a yellow suit and wide-brimmed hat stood out. She looked at the strangers, half smiled and said, βCan I help you?β
βWe are looking for Derek.β
βHeβll be at work now.β
βYou wouldnβt happen to know where he works?β asked Karen.
βSure. Heβs a floor manager at First Image.β
βGents outfitters,β clarified Karen.
βI know that!β said Walter. βI am a gent, and I do buy outfits.β
βYeah, sure, course, sorry, Guv.β
βYouβre police arenβt you?β said the woman, smirking.
βYes, how did you know?β said Walter.
βOh every woman knows you now, Walter, youβre quite famous around Chester these days.β
Karen grinned.
βReally?β said Walter, unable to keep a smile from his face.
βOh yes,β she said. βNo one would ever forget a man with an image like yours.β
Karen smiled and gave her boss the once over as if she had never really examined him before. Maybe the woman was right. A big black man with a head of unkempt grey hair, even in twenty-first century Britain there would not be too many Walter Darriteau look-a-likes strolling round Chester way, that was for sure.
βHeβs not in any trouble, is he?β
βNo, nothing like that, just routine enquiries.β
βAh, thatβs what you always say, βroutine enquiriesβ, if I know you, heβs probably mixed up in some gruesome murder.β
βI donβt think so,β said Karen, picking up on Walterβs body language that he wanted the chatter to come to an end.
But Walter surprised her by continuing the chat.
βThat your car downstairs?β
βIt is. How did you know?β
βOnly one there, and itβs yellow. Colour coordinated,β and Walter glanced pointedly at the yellow suit and hat.
The woman laughed.
βWe try. Once a detective, always a detective, eh?β
βSomething like that. New is it, the car?β
βSix months.β
βDo you like it?β
βBest car Iβve ever had.β
βGreat,β said Walter. βWhatβs your name, by the way?β
βMary Warner, Iβm not a suspect too, am I?β
βNo. Course not, just....β
βYes, I know, βroutine enquiriesβ.β
Walter nodded and grinned.
βCanβt stand about here all day,β she said. βNice to have met you. Good luck with whatever it is you are looking into.β
βAnd you too,β said Walter, as they followed her down the stairs and out into the gloomy November day.
SITTING IN THE CAR, they watched her back the Cayton out and smile and wave and drive off.
βWhat was that all about?β asked Karen.
βI have no idea. Nice woman though.β
βYou fancied her?β
βI wouldnβt say that exactly. And anyway....β
βAnyway what?β
βI have a new lady friend now.β
βDo you? Since when?β
βDidnβt I tell you?β
βNo, you did not.β
βMet her on the Internet.β
βDid you now?β
βYes.β
βOn the site I mentioned?β
βThe very same.β
βWhatβs her name? Whatβs she like?β
βNot now, letβs get on with the job. Iβll maybe tell you later.β
Karen grinned and made a mental note to come back to that.
βWhere to? First Image?β
Walter nodded and growled, βYep,β and then he added, βhow old do you think she was, yellow Mary?β
Karen pulled a face and said, βHard to tell, forty, maybe forty-five.β
βShe was well preserved for that.β
βYou think so? I hope I look like her when I am forty-five. Forty-five is positively ancient.β
βForty-five is positively young, but thatβs another issue, come on, I want to talk to this vacuous man, Nesbitt, as Dot described him.β
βMe too,β said Karen. βCanβt wait.β
Six
The general manager at First Image wasnβt too keen on having an important member of his sales staff dragged off the floor during peak time selling, and even less impressed when the police commandeered his office to speak to Nesbitt. Derek came to the open door and knocked.
βYou wanted to see me?β
βYes,β said Karen, doing the introductions.
βNo trouble is there?β said an obviously nervous Derek, as he sat down in front of the desk.
βJust routine,β said Walter, trying to put the guy at ease.
Walter glanced across as the man. What was he? Mid to late thirties maybe, probably six feet, slim to medium build, short neatly parted brown hair, dark eyes, and neatly and smartly dressed, which was almost certainly a requirement in his profession. Walter kicked things off.
βCorrect me if Iβm wrong, but are you Ellie Wrightβs boyfriend?β
βEllie? No, why? I know her but she isnβt my girlfriend, no way, never.β
βReally?β said Karen. βBut Ellieβs mother told us that you went to Spain on holiday with her.β
βWell yes, we did, but just as mates, not as a couple, weβre not bed sharers, or anything like that.β
βBut you knew her well?β asked Walter.
βYeah, I guess, look what is this all about? Whatβs Ellie been up to now? Whatβs she been saying?β
Walter and Karen ignored the questions for both wanted to ask the same thing. Walter got there first. βWhen did you last see her?β
βOoh, let me think, last week sometime.β
βWhen last week?β persisted Karen.
βLet me think, Friday, we went for a curry together, no, hang on, Thursday night it was, Friday I was out playing darts.β
Walter clarified. βYou last saw her on Thursday night?β
Derek nodded and looked confident. βYeah, Thursday it was, look, do you mind telling me what this is all about?β
Again the officers ignored his question.
Walter asked, βDo you know where she lives?β
βYeah, course, sheβs staying in a dilapidated old caravan down by the river, at the very end of Marigold Lane, pretty rank it is too. Iβve been trying to persuade her to get a decent flat.β
βDo you do drugs, Derek?β asked Karen.
βMe? Certainly not. Iβm clean.β
βBut you knew that Ellie did?β said Walter.
Derek pulled a face and said, βYeah, sheβs messed about with it, but nothing too serious. At least I donβt think so.β
βDo you deal drugs?β asked Karen.
βMe! No! Course not! What do you take me for? Look, what is this all about?β
βWhat else do you know about Ellie Wright?β asked Walter.
βHow do you mean?β
βYou know what we mean!β said Karen.
Derek breathed out heavy and fidgeted in his seat. Looked as if he needed a cigarette.
βCome on Derek,β said Walter softly. βWhat else?β
βYou mean the men?β
Walter nodded.
βThe men?β said Karen.
βYeah. You know, she did tricks for men, for cash like, now and again.β
βDown at the caravan?β said Walter.
βYeah,
